I brought it to the going away party and had everyone put there information in it. This way they have what they need. The issue I have with this book, is that it does not have any A,B,Cs in it. It's just page after page. I ended up buying Post Its with the alphabet and adding them in. Other then that, I really liked it. It has large area to write in, which really helps since we are getting older!! And yes, I would buy it for myself. In fact, I think I just may!

The Gap in the Curtain, by John Buchan

About the Author John Buchan, Baron Tweedsmuir, was a Scottish diplomat, barrister, journalist, historian, poet and novelist. He wrote adventure novels, short-story collections and biographies. His passion for the Scottish countryside is reflected in much of his writing. Buchan's adventure stories are high in romance and are peopled by a large cast of characters. 'Richard Hannay', 'Dickson McCunn' and 'Sir Edward Leithen' are three that reappear several times. Alfred Hitchcock adapted his most famous book 'The Thirty-Nine Steps', featuring Hannay, for the big screen. Born in 1875 in Perth, Buchan was the son of a minister. Childhood holidays were spent in the Borders, for which he had a great love. He was educated at Glasgow University and Brasenose College, Oxford, where he was President of the Union. Called to the Bar in 1901, he became Lord Milner's assistant private secretary in South Africa. By 1907, however, he was working as a publisher with Nelson's. During the First World War Buchan was a correspondent at the Front for 'The Times', as well as being an officer in the Intelligence Corps and advisor to the War Cabinet. Elected as a Conservative Member of Parliament for one of the Scottish Universities' seats in 1927, he was created Baron Tweedsmuir in 1935. From then until his death in 1940 he served as Governor General of Canada, during which time he nevertheless managed to continue writing.

Good read for those interested in England in the 1930s By Hal Jordan This book is actually not particularly suspenseful and so is not a thriller like Buchan's "The Thirty-Nine Steps." Nonetheless, I found it tremendously enjoyable. As one of the other reviewer's notes, the story involves several guests at an English country house in the early 1930s who each gets a very brief glimpse of a different page from the London Times one year in the future. Buchan is a superb writer and I found his account of the fates of these people very well done. However, you need to have some interest in England in the 1930s to truly appreciate this book. A couple of the story threads involve the political maneuverings in the British Parliament in the early 1930s as the Great Depression threw the normal party alignments into disarray. Naturally, these events were more interesting to people in England in 1932 when this book was published than they will be to readers in the contemporary U.S. One of the other reviewers found these parts of the book boring, but I think Buchan writes so well that they remain interesting.A couple of points: The book starts a bit slowly and the best of the story threads is the one that ends the book. In fact, I found the last story thread to be quite moving. So, don't abandon the book too early! Finally, [SPOILER ALERT] I found the twist at the end a bit farfetched, but it didn't spoil the book for me, particularly as it allowed for a happy ending.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A Fascinating Read By Bob C As a long-time fan of John Buchan, I especially enjoyed my re-reading of "Gap In The Curtain". At a weekend gathering in the country, several people are enabled to glimpse certain items that will be printed in the newspaper exactly one year in the future. The author proceeds to show his readers how this information is used by each individual. Buchan always writes in an entertaining manner, but his ingenuity in crafting these gripping narratives provides a unique contribution to his collection of novels. There are plenty of twists and turns, and some genuinely interesting insights into the way people think and act. Read it; you won't be disappointed.

By Alexander Gaya The fairly common question with which I have titled this review is the question Buchan sets out to answer in the course of six chapters in this adventure starring Sir Edward Leithen, quasi-autobiographical lawyer and MP. The first chapter sets the scene: a fancy dinner party attended by a ‘mad scientist’ leads to Sir Edward and six others from the dinner party being handpicked to test the professor’s cutting-edge theories about time. At the climax of the chapter, each person sees an issue of The Times dated one year in the future, and in each case notices a paragraph or headline that relates directly to them. The remaining five chapters, each dedicated to an attendant other than Sir Edward (the sixth human guinea pig fainted prior to viewing the ‘gap in the curtain’), explore how humans in different stations and mental states respond to having ‘seen beyond’. Although the snippets of the paper previsioned by each person are indeed printed verbatim, signifying the professor’s experiment was successful, the prescribed fate does not always occur in the manner one might expect. Although containing faint ‘trademarks’ of a Buchan novel (references to the classics, men who are MEN!, allusions to The Pilgrim’s Progress, distrust of socialism), this novel focuses more intently on the psychology of the characters and on emotional dynamics than many of Buchan’s novels; it is also more heavily autobiographical. This is certainly one of Buchan’s better written works, and frequently ranges into “five-star” territory in many respects, but not frequently enough to push it over the (very high) barrier between my four-star and five-star ratings.I am absolutely delighted with the edition released by House of Stratus, a small publisher that puts certain more careless small publishers to shame. The cover image is mildly relevant to the contents and the front and back covers are quite serviceable with respect to both aesthetics and content. A brief biographical blurb of Buchan is provided inside. The typesetting within the book is attractive and skillful. No introduction or textual notes were provided, but when reading Buchan one does just fine without such decorations.As a 'first-rate second-tier author' generally, Buchan is near the height of his authorial vigor in The Gap in the Curtain. Devotees of Buchan; enjoyers of Haggard, Kipling, and Stevenson; and appreciators of psychological novels will likely find this a pleasant read.

We all know Randall Garrett from the great "Lord Darcy" series By Wulfstan You say you have never read the Lord Darcy series of Alt-hit fantasy mysteries? Then, find Lord Darcy by Randall Garrett, and start reading.Lord Darcy is sort of a Alt-hist Sherlock Holmes, but in an England where Richard the Lionharted lived on and founded a great dynasty and there's magic. Not a lot, and it follows hard & fast rules, but it plays a part in the series. In fact playing Watson to Darcy is the much more competent Archmage Master Sean, without whom Darcy would be at a loss for many of his clews. Of course, what really solves the mysteries are Darcy's deductive reasoning. The books are have the elements of a pastiche, as nearly every other detective shows up in a guise (Nero Wolfe, James Bond, etc).But enough about that series, you're here to find out if this is worth getting. Are you a Randall Garrett fan? Then YES! If not- then maybe. This is a screwball comedy mystery, with elements of SF and fantasy. Funny and light hearted, and a fun fast read.

Of particular significance is the role played by 1972 red Cadillacs. Spotting a red Cadillac, Malone moves in on the car to investigate and....Wham! He wakes up with a very sore skull (later found to be from a blackjack). Later, given him by one of the police officers who found him in his damaged state, was a little notebook with mysterious written notations and symbols. From these clues, with the reluctant help of the New York City Police Department and the State Governor, as well as his trusty assistant and the beautiful girl he happens to meet, he pursues the criminals who seem to be omnipotent. The humor is broad but funny, the events increasingly fantastical, the book light and airy. All in all, a good natured, amusing interlude.

The author does a great job taking the reader from the history of Kaizen to the final chapter that discusses accessing little used parts of the brain to develop "Whole Brain Goodness" This book delivers a well written road map for developing success habits that will stick. Michael has left out the fluff that normally makes up about 50% of self help programs. He is very to the point about getting from point A to Z in a logical and well established plan that is both interesting and logical. The book is a quick read and worth the very low price. Good job Michael. Highly recommended!

In a short 27 pages, he basically teaches us a technique that can help us for the rest of our lives: Kaizen. The author fully illustrates how Kaizen principles can be successful and helpful in everyday life, as well as offer tips to help us succeed. While this is an easy read, I find that it's packed with information and ways I can improve my life. Fantastic!

Success is not merely for those who were 'born into a good life'. As a girl who's struggled financially, but is also slowly building her own business- I am constantly on the outlook for books that can improve my ability to find success in this world. This was definitely one of those books. I sat down and delved into this book head first. I've read quite a few self-help books oriented at business success, but this is one that I feel absolutely anyone could benefit from. 17 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Ugh By Ms. Bookwright At first, I thought this book was written by a ghostwriter from another country who was paid by the word. The writing is so stilted and strange. Here are a few examples:"If you own a functioning smart phone you will need to acquire an app to start reconnaissance." (The copyright date is 2015 on this book, but all right, some people still don't own functioning smart phones... but reconnaissance?)Or worse, "The warehouse is receiving and shipping procedures are concentrated on for distributors and manufacturers." Huh?Here's my favorite chapter title: "How to Go Lucrative Selling Physical Books Online." Yes, I've been wanting to go lucrative for a long time.To give you a taste of what this package is like, consider the first "book," which claims to have 7 proven steps for earning 1k to 5k per month selling private-label stuff through FBA (Fulfillment By Amazon). The table of contents just shows the chapters as step 1, step 2, etc., but that's not very informative. Here are the steps:- "Step 1: Establishing a New Amazon FBA Account" (this is just directions for signing up for an FBA account on Amazon)- "Step 2: Important Tips for New Sellers on the Amazon Marketplace" (basically tells you to learn stuff and figure out what you're doing before you just jump in)- "Step 3: Comprehending Shipping Procedures Encompassed with Amazon FBA" (most incomprehensible explanation I've ever seen for how fulfillment works. Still no actual steps for actually doing anything.)- "Step 4: The Process of pricing your FBA Inventory to be Sustainable on Amazon" (oh, is this about how to figure out what price to charge so your stuff will sell and you'll be profitable? No. It basically says you should monitor the competition and change your prices from time to time, and then it walks you through which buttons to click in order to reprice an item on Amazon's website.)- "Step 5: Determining the best Product to Sell on the Amazon Marketplace" (this "process" boils down to: get PLR content and sell it digitally. But what does that have to do with FBA? Um, nothing. Right.)- "Step 6: Acquiring Consent for selling in the gated group" (strange chapter about obstacles to selling licensed sports team memorabilia. When I tried to look up the term "gated group," I discovered a bunch of other copies of this chapter on various sites online. Ohhhh, PLR and a story spinner. Suddenly the writing in this book makes a lot more sense.)- "Step 7: Mounting your Enterprise, Employing Workers, and making Goals for the Future of the Business" (a very long, tedious philosophical monologue on business overall, with no discernible information whatsoever)The other two "books" in this file are less nightmarish and insane but still pretty lacking in anything concrete or useful. Seriously, don't waste your time on this one.

From the Author This book was something of a pet project to prove to myself that I had something valuable to say that people wanted to read.  Thank you to those who both purchase the book and provide feed back.  This was my first book, and though it is rough and dated, I believe it still has an important message.

Using stories and tangents to highlight the lessons he is trying to teach the author helps managers better understand how to be effective leaders.

About the Author Daniel Hansen started working in Indian Gaming in September of 1997 at a native casino, and he spent his entire adult life learning everything he could about how the industry works and actively managing staff, which he still does as a Casino Executive. He is an enrolled member of the Village of Kotzebue. His background allows him to see Native Casinos through the eyes of a businessman, a lawyer, a philosopher, and still remember true success does not necessarily come just with a bigger bottom line, but an empowered tribal membership and an improved community. He firmly believes in Servant Leadership, and only by empowering others will he find success in this life. Basically he is super awesome...

By Book lover This is not truly a book; it is a double-spaced pamphlet of about 20,000 words masquerading as a book. This is not damning of itself, as true wisdom can be imparted in but few words. But this book is poorly organized and presented, and suffers from abysmal editing. Awkward phrasing, run-on sentences, clumsy syntax all make it difficult to get at whatever merits this book might have had. I recommend that the author do a re-write, hire a capable editor, and demand the same level of merit of himself that he does of the incompetent supervisors he rails against.

Good thoughts and some true nuggets By Richard Williams Personally knowing the author I can see his personality coming through in many ways throughout this book. He offers up his own experiences (good and bad) for which I can appreciate. There are some great points and lessons learned presented in his stories. The book is an easy and enjoyable read (about 4 hours in one sitting).
