Their purpose is not to conquer, but to stop potential interplanetary wars, so they allow annexed planets to continue to rule themselves. They do impose one rule, however: slavery is not allowed. And Aditya is a slave planet: .1% of the people own the other 99.9%.This marvelous little short story follows what happens as the Empire's representative, the inexperienced son of a politically well-connected rich family, goes about freeing the slaves, applying the high moral principles that he learned at university -- principles as firmly held as they are untested in practice.Originally published in 1962. The military elemtent is minor, as is the scientific speculation. This story is a commentary on the socio-economics of slavery in its many forms.

Justifying a five-star rating is easy: this is a wonderful story, well told, exciting, entertaining, thought provoking, educational, and enlightening.This is the story of a benevolent empire taking over a planet of about 12,000 masters and millions of slaves. The catch is the empire does not want to govern individual planets, but it does enforce an absolute prohibition of slavery. What can freedom mean to the inhabitants of this planet and how can the government and society be restructured!?Piper wrote S.F. where the `S' May be interpreted as science, speculative, or social. On the surface his stories are rip-roaring space operas, action packed and exciting, seemingly light fair, but oh so much more. Though largely self educated he had a superb grasp of history, sociology, economics, politics, and forms of government. These are brilliantly displayed in this story without being didactic.The outcome of this story is a bit predictable as it is the genuine logical consequence of the premises, how ever this did not detract from my enjoyment of reading to the very end as I was sufficiently interested in the central characters to want to see how they are affected by the final events.It was a joy to read this electronic transcription as it is well formatted and there are no glaring typos or elisions. It is a joy to read something that has been proofread and corrected.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Another Sci-FI Tale from H Beam Piper By Fantasyman Not one of Piper's better stories in my mind. Not badly written, just, not my cup of tea. Having read much of Piper's work, I am convinced that he was a bit of a social Darwinist at heart, and perhaps more than a little of a Fascist. He seems to always believe that might will win out, that force and determination will overcome all obstacles, and that the mass of humanity are little more than willful pawns in the game played between greater powers. That the cunning and guileful will always lead the masses, conversely, that the masses are always weak and in need of a powerful hand to guide them. The whole intricate concept of free will doesn't seem to enter into the equation, then again, it is after all just a story.As I said, this isn't one of his better offerings in my opinion, then again, my opinion isn't what counts, yours is. Read it for yourself and decide.

This sentence, near the end of Will Caraway's book, is the basis for Will's networking philosophy. To build those relationships, though, you have to have a plan for your networking, yet most people just dive in (or maybe wade in ankle deep) without having such a plan. If that sounds familiar or you are unhappy with your networking results generally, read this book. It can be read in one sitting, yet it offers a strategy which will differentiate you and bring you results! Don't hesitate to make the investment in yourself and your business: buy this book and implement its principles.

Lots of Advice You Can Find Easily on the Web By Mitch This book suffers a bit from multiple personality disorder Sometimes the tips are too brief.. Little more than a paragraph or two. Others go into long discussions of points that every kindergartner is taught (whether they learn those lessons, is another question).There are books on marketing screenplays that are full-length manuscripts and written by agents and/or managers that cost little or no more than this slim e-book. So that said, is the information so unique or explained in a way that is so clear that the reader receives good value? My inclination is to prefer the more established books on marketing screenplays. Just be careful to buy one written in the last several years, since the market for screenplays has and does change over time.Another complaint is common to many of my reviews for self-published Kindle books. There is more than a little hawking of the author's courses and services. I don't buy an e-book expecting loads of self-promotion. On a related note, Hal constantly intrudes as the author. I understand that some authors feel this makes the ebook feel candid and chatty. My bias, it's a tiresome schtick at best that I wish indie authors would drop.I can recommend this e-book as a time saver. If you go to ScriptMag.com or any of several other Web sites and blogs for and by screenwriters and small producers, you can find all of the advice in this e-book. I believe a good way to think of this book is a source for post-it notes to paste on your laptop or desk to remind you of important marketing points.The advice is solid enough. It's well-intentioned, too. The style of presentation is conversational. Those and the compilation of 33 ideas means the e-book is not a waste of money for the beginning screenwriter.

I've been a follower of Hal's and his ScreenwritingU for over three years and his insights and understanding of the industry are always spot on! I've read all the other books, gone to lectures from "insiders", but I've found no one that packs more USABLE information into any class I take. The first author made a statement about how bad the nightclub's bellydancers were. People say mean things in their heads or speak unkindly to each other about each other. Unfortunately, for professionally publicized books, it doesn't fly. It makes the author look really bad, very unprofessional, and a dangerous person to know. There is no need to put anyone else down in order to substantiate a personal reality (to make your way better). Most readers won't keep reading once they see this happening. The author loses credibility and people view them as being unable to protect others from their own demons.

Beam Piper's work into the public domain publishers like Wildside Press have finally begun to bring Piper's work back into print and for that fans of Piper owe them a debt of gratitude. This novel, set in Piper's Terrohuman Future History, takes place on Fenris, an unusual colony world that rotates only four times in its circuit of its sun. With each "day" lasting for an entire season Fenris suffers from harsh storms forcing settlement underground and underwater. The novel follows teenage newsman Walt Boyd as be becomes involved in the efforts of the local Monster Hunters--fishermen of a sort who make their living hunting Fenris' large sea creatures--to break free from the monopolist who controls the planetary market. In the course of his adventure Walt discovers a deeper plot that has interstellar dimensions. An exciting story for readers of all ages.Also recommended from Piper's Terrohuman Future History are his novels Uller Uprising, Little Fuzzy, Junkyard Planet, and Space Viking, and the anthologies Federation and Empire edited by John F. Carr.

Fenris is an unusual world; one that's year is about the same as Earth's, but it only has four days per year! With blazing hot days and nights that are colder than cold, it is a world of tough individuals who don't like being cheated. Well, they are being cheated, and as Walter Boyd, star reported for the Port Sandor Times, watches, the whole world prepares to go up in flames.This story is absolutely great! H. Beam Piper (1904-64) is one of the little recognized greats of science fiction. He was an expert at creating fascinating worlds that were both fantastic and yet utterly believable, and this story shows his writing ability off to great effect. If you like good sci-fi, then you will like this book. If you are a fan of H. Beam Piper, then it is a must-have!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Whale hunting on an alien world By Paul F. Brooks H. (Henry) Beam Piper (1904-64) had published nine novels during his brief creative lifetime. Several of them are, even today, highly regarded and considered to be minor classics in the science-fiction field. In my opinion "Four Day Planet" is not one of them. This book, published in 1961, was intended for the young-teen market and is plagued with stereotype characters and a wooden plot that limps along to a conclusion that has been telegraphed since the first chapter. The story of a fisherman's co-op plagued by dishonest leaders on an alien world is just plain dull. The fishermen hunt a whale like fish for a unique wax that is exported via the corrupt co-op. A fearless cub reporter equipped with a carbine and sleeping-gas cigarette lighter and a secret agent disguised as the town drunk bring the malcontents to justice and head off a civil war. As a fan of Piper's books I plowed through this early work to satisfy my curiosity since it is such an obscure title. After it's initial 1961 printing in hard cover it was not republished as a paperback until 1979. Today the book is in the public domain and it can be downloaded to an e-reader for free. I would definitely not recommend this title to new readers but suggest reading "Little Fuzzy" or "The Cosmic Computer".

It is undeniable that there is a tendency in living organisms to evolve from lower to higher states of complexity. Thus, complex life evolved from self-replicating molecules to sophisticated cellular mechanisms to multicellular organisms and populations of organisms, and this trend to more complex forms does not seem to stop. Although the theory of Darwinian evolution explains how organisms adapt to their environment, fails when trying to explain why complexity is always raising. All levels of complexity coexist in our planet, so, it is naive to afirm that more complex forms of life are better adapted than simpler ones. Therefore, natural selection cannot explain evolution towards complexity. This book aims to weave a new theory in which Darwinian evolution remains important, but the evolution towards complexity is guided above all by the evolutionary innovations that individual elements to communicate in better ways. Thus, the emergence of the eukaryotic cell was possible due to an endosymbiotic event between two bacteria; the multicellular organism was possible due to innovations in chemical and electrical communication between cells; communities and individuals are possible due to the development of forms of communication such as language, coupled with technologies that increase the range within relations can be established among individuals. The book argues that, contrary to the old view that life needs high doses of negative entropy and therefore is an unlikely phenomenon in the universe, the evolution of the complexity is associated with high entropy because elements undergo a process of simplifaication once those elements come into a cooperative relationship. That simplification with consequent increment in entropy is what gives the character of irreversible to evolution toward complexity. In the energetics sense, evolution towards complexity is not exclusive to living organisms, but on the contrary, is an extension of the evolution of inanimate matter. This evolution can be compared to a fall. Like a ball on top of a hill has a maximum potential energy that dissipates as it falls making the system more stable once it reaches the ground, the early universe had a huge potential energy given by the three natural forces. These three forces linked subatomic particles in more stable states forming atoms, and atoms with other atoms to form stars, galaxies and heavier elements. Life is a continuation of this trend. The fall brought about by the electromagnetic force determines the formation of complex molecules of life, and the interaction of molecules to form complexity. In that sense, there is no real border between inanimate matter and life forms. It corresponds to natural selection to try out a myriad of combinations until an innovation takes the great leap that will allow the emergence of the next level of complexity. That way life is made of layers, like an onion, each with its own implicit complexity. However in all levels of complexity from the cell to complex communities, the same fundamental principles apply which are repeated as fractals: scale restrictions that do not allow the accumulation of complexity so that it accumulates in the next higher level, simplification of the lower level as the next level increases in complexity, sophistication in cooperation of the elements, etc. Overall, the book is a journey of arguments to a theory of evolution towards complexity that ultimately results in the superorganisms.

  1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Great Detailed Story By Dustin Ellard It's always great to read a story that brings in the challenges and overcoming them. Even better when you get lessons at the end of each challenge or in this case chapters that can specifically point out the challenges that the author incurred and how they solved them and how you can too. As a global traveler myself and going into China in 2005 for my first business venture to discuss buying products from a factory I completely resonated with Michael on what I expected and what reality really was. Great book, great read for anyone who is about to journey overseas on a business venture and even better for those of you who are going to move to China or at the very least go there on a sourcing trip.

This book manages to provide indispensable REAL WORLD tips about doing business in Hong Kong and China, while being a truly interesting human read as well. As per his podcast, Michael is completely open and transparent about his mistakes, the real costs involved, the pros/cons of doing business as a Westerner in China, and there's a ton of fascinating personal stories too. I can't recommend "Destination China" highly enough!

Different than what I expected, but still a very rich book By Joshua Padnick I'll admit that my primary motivation for reading this book was somewhat shallow--I basically wanted to read about how one of history's most successful businessmen amassed so much wealth. To be honest, the book didn't really give as many details as I would have liked on that particular interest. But what I got along the way made the book worth it.First and foremost, after reading 350 pages of Carnegie writing about his life you feel like you really start to know him, to get a sense of what kind of human being he was, and even to get a sense of his somewhat remarkable confidence level that exists in conjunction with his pretty inspiring level of benevolence and compassion. But I think even more than getting a sense of Carnegie, you get a sense of the time he lived in. Some of the most engaging parts of the book for me were the first-hand accounts of Lincoln during the Civil War, or Carnegie's conversations with President Harrison about a small uprising in Chile. You also hear about how he handled the strikes of steel workers, an occurence I'd only read about in history books but never learned directly about from the perspective of the manager.All throughout Carnegie peppers with his nuggets of wisdom, and you get the feeling he knows people want them really badly but that he chooses to give them sparingly.In the end, I probably will never re-read this book, but I feel better educated about one of history's greatest industrialists, greatest benefactors, and the time he lived in after having read it. If you have a nascent interest in history, you will most likely enjoy this book; if you're looking for a "how to make your millions" from a master, I would look elsewhere.

Mr. Carnegie serves as a great role model, which I feel is quite important, especially considering the terrible events in schools lately. Carnegie emphasizes the importance of self-improvement, knowing your talents, being kind, and also the importance of public speaking. You will learn important lessons thru personal anecdotes of his life. This book should be required reading for every adolescent attending high school.

Launius Born in Scotland but an immigrant to the United States as a teenager, Andrew Carnegie has been variously characterized as a "captain of industry" or a "robber baron" by those who have chronicled his rise to wealth and fame in the latter nineteenth century. After selling his steel company to J.P. Morgan at the turn of the century, Carnegie devoted himself to philanthropic goals. He gave away more than $350 million to various causes and endowed more than 250,000 libraries. His philanthropic activities were underpinned by a fundamental belief in the virtue of hard work, perseverance, and self-improvement through education, hence his emphasis on libraries and the endowing of other educational organizations. Fundamentally, this book offers a restatement of the "Horatio Alger" myth of the "American dream" of success through personal commitment. At the same time Carnegie seeks to pass on his wisdom gained through a lifetime of effort. A significant and fascinating statement of American industrial individualism that is required reading for all who wish to understand the history of the United States in the latter nineteenth century, Carnegie's autobiography also served as a model for many others to follow. Unfortunately, few achieved the success that Carnegie enjoyed despite the diligence they may have registered.

It is filled with many inspiring techniques that I can use to become a more creative artist. It assists you with coming up with new ideas and secrets by utilizing artist masters drawing techniques. I only wish that the author would elaborate further on a few techniques, such as perspective. I am very satisfied with this book and I look forward to more from this author.

It is trite and superficial feel good attempt at a book. Take the title off this book and you would not see anything connected with Leonardo. Has the author ever read any of his notebooks? Then where is the depth and the insight that the title demands? Read a better book and Leonardo's notebooks instead.

The list of good and bad leaders and the lessons that we can learn from them was a very interesting topic for me. In that section, you will learn more about what worked and what did not and any lessons that we can learn from the qualities of the said leaders.
