Ebook PDF Immunity, by William E. Paul

This significant book conveys Dr. William E. Paul’s enduring enthusiasm for the field of immunology, the incredible accomplishments of the past half-century, and the future’s untapped promises.

The immune system has incredible power to protect us from the ravages of infection by killing disease-causing microbes or eliminating them from the body. Boosted by vaccines, it can protect us individually and as a "herd" from diseases such as measles. As Dr. Paul explains, however, the power of the immune system is a double-edged sword: an overactive immune system can wreak havoc, destroying normal tissue and causing diseases such as type I diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and multiple sclerosis. The consequences of an impaired immune system, on the other hand, are all too evident in the clinical agonies of AIDS and other immunodeficiency diseases.

Packed with illustrations, stories from Dr. Paul’s distinguished career, and compelling narratives of scientific discovery, Immunity presents the three laws of the human immune system—universality, tolerance, and appropriateness—and explains how the system protects and harms us. From the tale of how smallpox was overcome to the lessons of the Ebola epidemic to the utility of vaccines and the hope that the immune system can be used to treat or prevent cancer, Dr. Paul argues that we must position ourselves to take advantage of cutting-edge technologies and promising new tools in immunological research, including big data and the microbiome.

Review

A treasure trove of information, this wonderful book should broadly appeal to anyone interested in human health and disease. There is no competing volume that covers such breadth of immunology at this personal level. A tour de force.

(Daniel M. Davis, University of Manchester, author of The Compatibility Gene: How Our Bodies Fight Disease, Attract Others, and Define Our Selves)

Dr. Paul has lived the modern history of basic and applied immunology. His warm, down-to-earth style and deep insight into biology lead the reader on a fascinating journey in understanding these diverse processes from the vantage point of a discovery scientist.

(Hyam Levitsky, MD, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine)

Immunity is at once an informative history of immunology with numerous personal asides and a brilliant introduction to the wonders of this key field of medical science. The novice can learn immunology from this book while the professional will appreciate Dr. Paul’s role in the history and enjoy his erudition and judgment.

(David Baltimore, California Institute of Technology, Nobel Prize Winner in Physiology or Medicine, 1975)

Bill Paul recounts in a clear fashion the ideas, experiments and insights that have led us to our present day understanding of immunity. Along the way we encounter new viruses, autoimmunity and the latest insights in cancer immunotherapy.

(Arnold Levine, PhD, Professor Emeritus, Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton N.J.)

An excellent overview of what science knows about immunology today.

(Harriet Hall Science-Based Medicine)

Written by a prominent researcher and scholar who not only followed the history of immunology but also participated in its creation, Immunity could be considered as an excellent summary of the classical, pre-systemic, immunological era.

(Metascience)

From the Back Cover This new collection of 12 articles form Scientific American illustrates key facets of the immune system, providing a striking picture of our defense against infectious agents.

Instead of an autobiography concerning the life and career of one of the world's most eminent immunologist, I got a mix of dry textbook and autobiography. I don't know if I consider this a good or bad thing, but I definitely think this book is written for a specific audience and it's not the lay man.William E Paul, a prominent member at the National Institute of Health has written plenty of academic texts on immunology, held roles as president of American Association of Immunologists and the American Society for Clinical Investigation, a director of NIH's AIDs research division and has been an editor of the Annual Review of Immunology volumes 1 through 30. It's not surprising that during his career he has met plenty of medical rock stars and contributed heavily in modern immunology research. I can't imagine a better person to write an novel on immunity geared towards doctors without a PhD in Immunology. The main focus of Immunity seems to be on basics of the human immune system, leaps in immunology research both past and present and the changing environment of immunology in the face of funding changes throughout the decades: The success rate (the number of grant applications funded divided by the number submitted) has dropped from 30 percent in 2003 to 19 percent in 2012. Effectively that means that many talented individuals, particularly younger scientists, will fail to obtain research support and may leave science, cutting off a future generation.Immunity took me a few months to read, often with breaks between chapters because I required plenty of research on the basics of Immunology before I could continue. Unfortunately, while William Paul attempts to explain the basics of the study of human immunity, I found it difficult to understand some of the more technical discussions without scouring the internet for discussions on items such as T Cells, cytokines, Th2 and lymphocytes. I particularly enjoyed the small section on jawless vertebrates and adaptive immune systems. I actually learned plenty of really fantastic information that may even lead to a deer understanding of other scientific literature.Fortunately, thanks to William E Paul, I understand quite a bit more about the human immune system and medical science as a whole since reading this autobiography/textbook. I discovered new knowledge, researched new material and learned plenty about the ever changing medical research environment.Do I recommend Immunity? Of course, but only to those wanting an intense read that often requires time for thought. Immunity is not an armchair read. It is not meant to be devoured in one sitting or a few, but in long months of reflection and self-education. Well, that is unless you are already a medical student or immunologist! This book would appeal to readers who are already well educated in medical terminology, lovers of medical science or those who are interested in a very dense novel. I wouldn't suggest this book if you want something basic or instructive on the very basics of immunology. A definite page turner with history, personal anecdotes and plenty of science to keep a reader happy.

Paul crafted a great book about the immune system, how it evolved and its role in health and disease. The book is up-to-date and gives the author’s view of what is to come. I also liked the personal stories that Paul told and the biographical information he provided on several important immunologists. Paul is also very specific when stating an opinion, that it is an opinion. This is not necessarily a beginner’s book; a background in biology will be helpful when digesting all the information in the book. Yet for those who have the background, this is a great book that I found hard to put down. I strongly recommend it for anyone interested in biology and for people who want real information on immunology and not the stuff that frequently appears on the internet.

Paul, MD is a very readable book about how our body’s immune system works to keep us healthy. While I selected this book in hopes of learning more about neutropenia, the book didn’t help me much with that. I did learn more about how neutrophils and how they operate. Some of the topics included in Paul’s book include:*Tracing an immune response*Vaccines and Serum Therapy*What is Tolerance?*CD8 T Cells: Killer cells and friends*The Microbiome and Innate immunity*How the immune system causes Rheumatoid arthritis and Lupus*Allergy and asthmaRecommend.Review written after downloading a galley from Edelweiss.

It's a book on how and what should one do in order to achieve what they are after. As the title suggests, it tells you how to think like rich people, how to act like them and what's the action plan to get there. If you are after success including money, better read this!

It’s a great motivational little book By Vincent It’s a great motivational little book, and I would recommend it to anyone who is looking for an action plan or general advice about. I found the cover and title a little off however, because it’s more about general attitudes than about making money. Still, it deserves 4 stars, because it’s well put together.

An eye-opening collection of clandestine poems by Afghan women

Because my love's American, blisters blossom on my heart.

Afghans revere poetry, particularly the high literary forms that derive from Persian or Arabic. But the poem above is a folk couplet―a landay, an ancient oral and anonymous form created by and for mostly illiterate people: the more than 20 million Pashtun women who span the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. War, separation, homeland, love―these are the subjects of landays, which are brutal and spare, can be remixed like rap, and are powerful in that they make no attempts to be literary. From Facebook to drone strikes to the songs of the ancient caravans that first brought these poems to Afghanistan thousands of years ago, landays reflect contemporary Pashtun life and the impact of three decades of war. With the U.S. withdrawal in 2014 looming, these are the voices of protest most at risk of being lost when the Americans leave. After learning the story of a teenage girl who was forbidden to write poems and set herself on fire in protest, the poet Eliza Griswold and the photographer Seamus Murphy journeyed to Afghanistan to learn about these women and to collect their landays. The poems gathered in I Am the Beggar of the World express a collective rage, a lament, a filthy joke, a love of homeland, an aching longing, a call to arms, all of which belie any facile image of a Pashtun woman as nothing but a mute ghost beneath a blue burqa.

I Am the Beggar of the World: Landays from Contemporary AfghanistanFrom Griswold, Eliza (TRN)/ Murphy, Seamus (PHT)

From Booklist *Starred Review* In The Tenth Parallel (2010), Griswold offered keen geopolitical insight by cataloging ongoing religious strife in contentious locales, including Indonesia, Nigeria, and Sudan. Here, the globetrotting Griswold recruits renowned photographer Seamus Murphy to provide the visuals, and turns her attention to Afghanistan in order to record a collection of landays, Afghani folk poems, typically sung by women in private. With the help of local guides and Pashto translators, Griswold convinces women to share couplets that touch on a wide range of emotions and themes, from love and grief to separation and war. Because the lyrics remain anonymous over generations, Afghan women use them to express freely their desires and frustrations, yet still risk violating Taliban strictures against song and dance. From heartbreaking indictments of fathers who sell their daughters into slavery to humorous, techno-savvy posts on a Pashto Landay Facebook page, Griswold’s selections illustrate the rich potential of this poetic form, at once contemporary and timeless. Murphy’s stunning photographs complement the text perfectly, capturing children at play in refugee camps outside Kabul, smiling U.S. soldiers pointing squirt guns, and armed militants marching through the mountains. A timely, indispensable, and unforgettable poetic documentary. --Diego Báez

Review

“Griswold's translations mark a stunning handling of [landay's] complex 'beauty, bawdiness, and wit.' Flanked by Murphy's photographs, with their striking blend of wartime journalism and human compassion, Griswold's couplets are peppered with brief prose passages in which she delves into cultural and historical traditions that inform the humor and gravity of her translations . . . a collection that may indeed be remembered as a groundbreaking work of translation and poetic journalism.” ―Publishers Weekly

“Eliza Griswold and Seamus Murphy have made a book that is necessary reading for anyone who has ever made assumptions from a distance about what a burka-wearing woman might be like, and for anyone who cannot fathom how poetry could get you killed. In other words, this book is a must-read for every U.S. citizen . . . Griswold's and Murphy's work might be a crucial turning point in the education of Americans about the real world--and the place of poetry in it.” ―Daniel Bosch, The Daily Beast

“The book's greatest strength is the complicated spectrum of voices that it allows these women, whom we wouldn't otherwise know anything about. I Am the Beggar of the World casts Pashtun women as vibrantly self-aware and autonomous . . . Griswold finds a way to present these poems and images in juxtaposition so that they evoke a multiplicity of voices and views, giving an almost democratic quality to the anthology's populace.” ―Jay Deshpande, The Millions

“*Starred review* From heartbreaking indictments of fathers who sell their daughters into slavery to humorous, techno-savvy posts on a Pashto Landay Facebook page, Griswold's selections illustrate the rich potential of this poetic form, at once contemporary and timeless. Murphy's stunning photographs complement the text perfectly, capturing children at play in refugee camps outside Kabul, smiling U.S. soldiers pointing squirt guns, and armed militants marching through the mountains. A timely, indispensable, and unforgettable poetic documentary.” ―Diego Báez, Booklist Starred Review

“I Am the Beggar of the World, translated by journalist and poet Eliza Griswold, with photos by Seamus Murphy, collects passionate, polemical, and traditionally secret two-line folk poems by Pashtun women on topics ranging from education, war, and personal autonomy to marriage, faith, loss, and homeland.” ―Elle

“I Am the Beggar of the World is a great and satisfying work. I applaud Eliza Griswold and Seamus Murphy. It is an essential look at the women of Afghanistan and the voices of dissent at risk of being suppressed when the American forces withdraw.” ―Sahera Sharif, Member of Afghanistan’s Parliament, founder of nationwide women’s literary circle, Mirman Baheer

“The poems in I Am the Beggar of the World cut like a knife--they are short, sharp--and leave you bleeding. They are the most direct voices of the inner life of Afghan women, and prove that these women, despite all hardships, are still standing. These two-liners make the reader feel close to the women that we've seen so often on the screen wandering like blue-clad ghosts on the dusty roadsides. A heart is a heart anywhere in the world.” ―Åsne Seierstad, author of The Bookseller of Kabul

“I Am the Beggar of the World is a revelatory book about Afghanistan, one sure to turn all the stereotypes about the country's women on their heads. The poems, equally art and reportage, are often poignant, more often witty, even pungent. They, along with the accompanying text and photographs, illuminate the beauty of the country and its culture, the sadness of its history, and the humor, the hopes, the bitterness, and even the contradictions its women--no different than women anywhere--carry in their hearts. This is an important book, but to describe it only that way is to neglect how deeply pleasurable it is to read.” ―Amy Waldman, author of The Submission

“Eliza Griswold brings a poet's sensibility, a folklorist's skills, and a journalist's savvy to these startling and incendiary folk poems by Afghan women, which she has so daringly collected and translated. With its arresting photographs and heartbreaking two-liners, I Am the Beggar of the World enlarges our sense of the work that poetry does in the world.” ―Edward Hirsch, author of The Living Fire

“This is poetry of a rural tradition that is as world-wise, war-wise and uniquely sophisticated as any collection of writing by women, anywhere.” ―Carol Muske-Dukes, author of Twin Cities

By Ellen Wielezynski Job well done on this amazing book created by Eliza Griswold and Seamus Murphy which shines a light into a world of where women's voices have not been heard (ever) in this way by most of us. The poetry captured finally in written word is beautiful and telling of the souls and struggles of women in Afghanistan to be heard by those of us a world away finally. That and the spectacular presentation of the book makes it a must have if only to show support for the voices it captures. Thanks Eliza and Seamus for making it accessible and excellent work!

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Enlightening and inspiring By Patricia Madden The landays and women who wrote them are enlightening and inspiring. I went to a reading by Eliza Griswold and was so moved by the amazing prose these women have created and the lengths they go to in order to share them with each other, often risking their lives. It's devastating how these women and their voices are oppressed by the Taliban. Hearing these poems makes a great case for funding more education for girls in Afghanistan and other Taliban-run areas.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. wonderful even if you are not a poetry geek! By Marilyn Parsons This book is a chimera of short poems, explanations of their meanings to the women who sing them, and photos. These very short poems are like snaps of a rubber band on your wrist. They are not dense poetry, but quick jabs at real life. Don't be afraid of the fact that this is poetry - although many of the topics are hard (war, loss, a woman's life). I read it more quickly than I should have!

BEWARE the copy with intro by Comfort By Caraleisa The original book by Charles Darwin is a classic that should be on everyone's reading list. There are ample reviews here which address it, praise it, and I am completely in agreement with them. Darwin's Origin of Species is a true masterpiece.Unfortunately, this review is to help readers/buyers realize that there is a 'vandalized' version which has been published, and to tell you how to avoid it and get the real thing. To explain; there is yet another edition also called "The Origin of Species, 150th Anniversary Edition", put out by Christian Fundamentalist Ray Comfort in an attempt to discredit evolutionary theory and Charles Darwin, and it has some extra 50 pages of unintelligible drivel about creationism, as well as having ABRIDGED Darwin's original text. If you want to read about creationism, find another book... if you want the facts, read ALL of what Darwin has to say, and please don't give any money to Comfort by accidentally buying his ABRIDGED version.Note that he used the EXACT same name as the 'real' anniversary edition -- "The Origin Of Species: 150th Anniversary Edition by Charles Darwin". You can easily tell which version you're getting by who wrote the introduction - go with Julian Huxley, NOT Ray Comfort, and you'll have the correct and complete version. Also, note that Amazon reviews are mixed between the books (normally not a problem at all) - I hope they are straightening this out, but currently that's not the case. Sadly, the negative reviews of the Comfort version are bringing down the rating of the 'good/real' book.Sorry to have to write about the 'drama', but I'm sure you want to know that you have ordered the correct book, and I know you'll love it.Enjoy.

This is the sixth edition of the Origin of Species By John Salerno My four-star rating is more for this particular product than for the work of Darwin itself. Clearly Darwin's book is the cornerstone of modern biology, and I won't even pretend to try to rate its importance using one to five stars. However, I felt it was important to let people know that this is the *sixth* edition of the book. I ordered it thinking it was the first, although I admit I had no reason to believe that other than that it did not specify that it was any other edition. The main problem with later editions is that Darwin continually responded to his critics in subsequent editions, thus changing some aspects of his theory. He also added the obnoxious concession "by the Creator" to his beautiful final sentence in order to appease the religious critics. The sixth (final) edition even has an extra chapter in response to criticisms by Catholic biologist George Mivart (which chapter is present in this edition, thus proving it is the sixth edition). The benefit to later editions would be that they contain minor corrections to the writing, as well as these answers to objections and criticism, but at the same time I don't feel that Darwin's answers needed to be added to the book itself. "The Origin" should simply present his theory (as the first edition does) and he could easily have answered his critics in other ways and not by editing the actual theory itself. But to reiterate my main point, I am not reviewing the actual work of Darwin. I am posting this review to inform people of which edition they are getting with this particular book, because I wish I had known in advance.Edit: I should add that the copy I received did not have the same cover as what is displayed here. My copy shows a bird, a wildcat, and a dolphin on the cover. The cover shown on the product page at the time of writing is of a ship. However, my copy is still the 150th Anniversary Edition (Signet Classics) with an introduction by Julian Huxley.

A Sham - Half the number of pages as the legitimate version, critical content omitted By Mitch Scott I have to admit, I'm astonished by the ease with which one can be fooled into thinking they've procured the full and legitimate content of Darwin's signature work. A couple of easy clues, though:Darwin refers in this version to a diagram in chapter IV, to illustrate "The Probable Effects of the Process of Natural Selection Through Divergence of Character and Extinction, On the Descendants of a Common Ancestor." This diagram is absent in this version, and this absence is what started me on the road to identifying this version as a fraud. I began to search for other editions of "Origins" to see if they included the diagram. And that search found not only that most versions did contain the diagram, but that the full text of this work ran to over 550 pages - twice as many as are included in this version.I should also have known better than to have procured a free version. You truly do get what you pay for.Be aware, as you look for a reliable version of the work, that there are many fraudulent versions out there. I won't go into detail on this, as this review concerns this specific version. But I can say that I've purchased a version that I am satisfied is a faithful rendering of the complete content. The ISBN number is 978-0-451-52906-0. It's the 150th anniversary edition, with an introduction by Julian Huxley. Still, don't take my word for it, and do your own due diligence. There is another "150th anniversary" version with an introduction by Ray Comfort, who is a Christian prothselitizer. So be careful.Hopefully this will prevent you from having to start reading the work again from the beginning, as I've had to do. But I'm glad to have figured it out and separated fact from fiction.

Excellent book on concentration! One area that I liked about this book is that it explained exactly what concentration is! In our modern world with all the distractions, its sometimes easy to be unclear on this question. Also, why concentration is important is another item that matters.I was really interested in how to improve concentration. This book delivered on that question. Also, chapters on focusing one"s mind and how to stay focused were full of great information. This is an important book-especially in the modern world with all its distractions.Time is well spent reading this book!

I'm not a fan of labels where it comes to this issue. But I acknowledge that it is harder and harder to concentrate on anything for long periods of time. Mat Fox offers a systematic approach to this that is sound and helps to use distractibility to your advantage. I particularly appreciated that the approaches weren't punitive - beating yourself up - but instead compassionate.

Your Trajectory Code: How to Change Your Decisions, Actions, and Directions, to Become Part of the Top 1% High Achievers, by Jeffrey Magee

From the Inside Flap

We live in an increasingly polarized world. There are those who wait impatiently for others to innovate and solve pressing problems, and there are those who don't wait—who achieve. What makes the achievers different? If two people start out, in life or in their careers, at the same point, what takes them in such radically different directions? The difference, as Jeffrey Magee explains, is in the Trajectory Code. Your Trajectory Code explains how, starting at birth, numerous factors have imprinted upon our lives, influencing our conscious and unconscious behaviors. These behaviors have gotten us to where we are today. To get where we want to be, we need to take control of our Trajectory Codes.

If you could extrapolate from your daily actions to draw a line into the future, where would that line end up? Many of us simply have no idea, so we go through life hoping that we are taking the actions that will help us achieve our goals. By contrast, the world's top achievers don't have to hope, because they have trained themselves—sometimes overcoming significant negative influences from their early lives—to respond in ways that lead to greatness. In Your Trajectory Code, readers learn how this mental training works and how easy it is to realign the trajectory toward success.

Amazingly, going from good to great starts with small, simple changes in thought and behavior. Through a daily recalibration of just 1% of how you act and how you respond to others, you can start to nudge your Trajectory Code toward your ideal. These small changes add up. By contrast, when your path through life is misaligned by just a small fraction, that's enough to land you far afield of your true potential.

With over twenty books under his belt, author Jeffrey Magee has already helped thousands of leaders accelerate their businesses and their lives. In Your Trajectory Code, he tackles the everyday psychology of success. By the end of the book, you will have a clear idea of where you are on your life's path and how to reorient yourself—without waiting for others to do it for you.

From the Back Cover

Take CONTROL OF YOUR DESTINY and Put Yourself on COURSE FOR SUCCESS

Imagine a pilot trying to fly a plane around the world. The pilot calibrates the plane's trajectory, but the path is off by just a fraction. By the end of the journey, that fraction has multiplied and the pilot is more than 500 miles off course! Your Trajectory Code is a guide to calibrating your own path through your life and career. Every action and decision you make, every single day, determines where you will end up. And your trajectory up to this point has been determined by imprints that others have left on your life, from birth onward.

In Your Trajectory Code, you'll learn to identify the unconscious habits of thought and action that have brought you to where you are today. You'll learn to leverage positive imprints for the future and change the ones that no longer serve you. This book will show you the ultimate life hack—making tiny changes that lead to big results. You already know that you have enormous potential. Read Your Trajectory Code to find out how to take control of that potential and achieve greatness.

As you progress through Your Trajectory Code, you'll track your personal, peer-to-peer, and organizational trajectories, setting the short- and long-term goals that will land you where you want to be. This book is more than just a theory—it's an interactive process of rebooting your life and surrounding yourself with people who will inspire you to succeed, and living life through the windshield, not the rear-view mirror. Don't wait to find out what the future holds. Take control of your Trajectory Code and train yourself to become an achiever.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. There Are Better Books on the Topic By Brandon Allen I have enjoyed hearing this author speak in the past as well as his past content. I like the premise of the book but there isn't a lot of new ideas brought forth. I found the presentation of the material to be confusing, there are several abbreviations and acronyms that the author tries to cram in the book, as well as overly abstract. The book could have used a lot more examples of how the material applies in the real world. There are others books that I recommend on personal development and achievement that I would recommend before this one.

Jeff Magee demystifies the barriers we often put on our own success. His step-by-step process will help anyone work toward their dream(s). It is methodical, applied, and practical. Having read the book, and beginning to apply the steps, I would pay 300% more for this book. It is that good.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. I have always had a hard time staying hyper focused on a specific task, it really sucks when everything is a distraction... By James A very good read. I would suggest reading it at least two or three times in short order and write down your thoughts as you read. The overall material and its foundation are not necessarily new concepts but the manner and perspectives you are challenged to consider and explore combined with Jeff's no BS delivery will most certainly provide you with a roadmap into yourself. I find it much easier to isolate the root causes of the self defeating things I used to allow in my way. The key is understanding how to catch yourself when you start to drift off course. This definitely helped me learn how to pre-sence this process within myself and I find it much easier to not only stay focused for longer periods of time but it is an empowering feeling when I'm able to accomplish more and to do so much quicker than before I worked through this process. Thumbs up!

'Generating waste is a human condition. There is, however, very little real knowledge about this important issue, as the mishandling of wastes threatens lives and the environment. Therefore, I strongly recommend Professor Gillespie's book, as it is an in-depth, extremely competent holistic overview of waste which covers both its management, and its economic impact. The language is accessible to all interested in these issues, and the book gives a unique insight into waste policy, with great attention to detail that showcases Gillespie's vast knowledge in all environmental matters.'- Malgosia Fitzmaurice, Queen Mary University of London, UK

'Nature knows no waste, only humans do. The modern industrial world seems to have forgotten that natural and human systems are inextricably linked. Waste has been externalized causing huge environmental, economic and social costs. This book aims for reversing the trend. Taking a comparative and contextual perspective, Gillespie shows how smart policies can lead to minimizing waste and to creating material flows consistent with ecological flows. An important book, rich in detail, very accessible and with a powerful message.'- Klaus Bosselmann, University of Auckland, New Zealand

From human waste to nuclear waste, the question of how we must manage what we no longer want, in terms of either recycling or disposal, is one of the most pressing issues in environmental law. Alexander Gillespie addresses the gaps in previous literature by incorporating economics, philosophy and the ideal of sustainable development in order to provide context to the surrounding legal and policy considerations for the management of waste.

The book's premise is that all forms of waste are expanding exponentially, and are often of a hazardous nature. The author examines the size of the problem, considers how it is evolving, and assesses the legal and political implications. He then shows that existing solutions to reducing consumption and recycling are limited, and concludes by discussing potential ways forward.

Students and scholars with an interest in environmental law at the national, regional and international level will find this book to be of use. The book will also be of interest to practitioners looking to solve the issues surrounding waste and recycling.

THIS IS ANOTHER BRILLIANT BEST FRIEND FROM EDWARD ELGAR COVERING THE HITHERTO NEGLECTED ISSUE OF WASTE POLICY By Phillip Taylor MBE THIS IS ANOTHER BRILLIANT BEST FRIEND FROM EDWARD ELGAR COVERING THE HITHERTO NEGLECTED ISSUE OF WASTE POLICYAn appreciation by Phillip Taylor MBE and Elizabeth Taylor of Richmond Green ChambersEdward Elgar Publishing is once again to be congratulated for raising another contemporary subject which involves us all: this time it is how we should deal with the subject of waste with the publication of ‘Waste Policy’ which all environmentalists will find absorbing reading.Over the years from the medieval castle’s kitchen midden (always normally outside the castle walls) to the wheelie bins of today (not quite so far out), the subject of how to deal with our waste has never really been treated with the seriousness it deserves … until now when we start finding ourselves short of space and the municipal muck heap becomes a serious political issue. Therefore, we welcome this formidable study by Alexander Gillespie which looks at comparative and contextual perspectives concerning waste policy and the inevitable ‘international regulation’ regime for certain types of waste.Gillespie reviews the subject matter (if we can call it that) from human waste and all its derivatives to nuclear waste raising the question of how we as a society must manage what we no longer want, in terms of either recycling or disposal. To say that this matter is one of the most pressing issues in national and international environmental law is quickly becoming an understatement as it has been on the political agenda for decades as the consumer and ‘the throw away’ society has begun to affect the planet in as big a way as the “doomwatchers” suggested as late as the 1970s.Gillespie grapples with what has been a noticeable gap in previous environmental literature by incorporating a thoughtful array of economics, philosophy and the ideal of sustainable development in his book to provide us with a suitable context for the surrounding legal and policy considerations on how to manage waste. The book’s main point is that all forms of waste are expanding exponentially, and are often of a hazardous nature: he is absolutely right but nothing has really been done about it in 20th century so it is now up to us. Gillespie examines the size of the problem in detail and then he goes on to consider how it is evolving today with a useful assessment of the legal and political implications, many of which are, frankly, very obvious to anyone who is aware of what we have been doing in the last few decades. What we particularly liked about Gillespie’s analysis is that he shows us that existing solutions to reducing consumption and recycling are limited, and concludes by discussing potential ways forward which will be of benefit to many, particularly those in local government as elected members or officers.Academics and students with an interest in environmental law at the national, regional and international level will find this book to be of special value for the content and suggestions put forward. It will also be of interest to practitioners interested in solving the issues surrounding waste and recycling and is highly recommended for both a specialist and a lay audience.

From the Author This book took about 6 months to write and was more therapeutic than I thought it would be. My first version was so controversial that I couldn't get my first publisher to print it. This version is much more tame and easier for folks to digest. Enjoy.

Björk is a contemporary icon whose contributions to music, video, film, fashion and art have influenced a generation worldwide. Designed by top graphic design agency M/M as a slipcased world of wonders, this publication―which accompanies The Museum of Modern Art's spring 2015 exhibition on Björk―is composed of six parts: four booklets, a paperback and a poster. Each booklet contains illustrated texts by, respectively, curator Klaus Biesenbach, New Yorker music critic Alex Ross, British professor of musicology Nicola Dibben and the philosopher Timothy Morton (in conversation with Björk), while the poster features artwork from Björk's albums and singles. The main book focuses on her seven major albums and the personas created for each one. Poetic texts by longtime collaborator, Icelandic poet Sjón, are accompanied by shots of Björk performing live; multiple stills from music videos made by directors including Michel Gondry, Chris Cunningham and Spike Jonze; images of Björk in breathtaking costumes by designers such as Alexander McQueen and Hussein Chalayan; and shots by star photographers such as Nan Goldin, Juergen Teller, Stéphane Sédnaoui, Inez van Lamsweerde & Vinoodh Matadin and Araki. All combine to form an extraordinary design masterpiece, celebrating the magical world of Björk.

Review Music fans of a certain age will recall the lost pleasures of album covers, and especially of box sets, which often included liner notes, lyrics, and interviews (and, of course, records). Bjork, the catalogue for MoMA's spring-blockbuster entertainment, recalls this form, with a slipcase containning four booklets and a slim paperbound book with poetic ruminations on the Icelandic star's first seven albums along with images of the David Bowie-like array of her performing personae. (Christopher Lyon Bookforum)Björk (Museum of Modern Art, March 24) is a beautiful book, let's get that out of the way; it's uniquely designed, and was thoughtfully laid out in a hard slipcase that any fan or newcomer to the artist would appreciate. It is a strange book, separated into five booklets with musical score-sheets printed on the covers, each cover getting the score of a different song, each cover a different color, and each one helping us understand the many shades of Björk's music, art, and life. (David LaGaccia ArtNet News)Beginning March 8, she takes center stage at New York's Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), where "Bjork," a retrospective surveys her creative experiments over the past 20 years. The exhibition will feature a new, immersive music-and-film project; trace her seven studio albums, from 1993's Debut to 2011's Biophilia (released in a pioneering album-app format); and include her collaborations with drectors, photographers, and designers like Alexander McQueen. (Diane Solway W)

Perfect Book/s for the Björk Fan By Michael Bettine I saw this book at MOMA in NYC, but didn't want to have to carry it home on the plane (it's big & heavy). If you are a Björk fan, chances are you'll enjoy it. If not, you might not get what all the fuss is about. It's a great set of books in a nice slipcase. The essays are well written, and the whole set is very artfully done.

The introduction book has a beatiful yet chaotic chronology of bjork's career. The pictures look stunning. I was not dissapointed. The book would have been perfect if it included her latest videos to make the collection complete.
