Jane Austen cleverly used furniture and household furnishings in her novels to create humorous, intimate, uncomfortable and even sexually charged situations. In chapter after chapter, Austen utilized furniture to craft scenes and create drama by directing her characters around the room, to and from chairs, sofas, windows, fireplaces and even the pianoforte. Furniture and Draperies in the Era of Jane Austen is a comprehensive source for all the illustrations published in one of the most influential periodicals of Austen’s lifetime – Ackermann's Repository of Arts. About the Author JODY GAYLE, bestselling author and researcher, likens her work to that of a literary archeologist rather than a traditional author. She is dedicated to unearthing publications of the past, and sharing these long-forgotten books... the jewels and riches of the written word. She has uncovered tens of thousands of old publications from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and wants to bring them to life, and send her readers traveling back in time.

Gayle's publications which I'm fortunate enough to possess By Cheryl Bolen Once again, I am indebted to Jody Gayle, who unearths publications of the past to share with modern-day readers who want to travel back in time. Furnishings and Draperies in the Era of Jane Austen is the third of Ms. Gayle's publications which I'm fortunate enough to possess.Every single print (100 in all) of beautiful draperies and furniture from the era of Jane Austen that appeared in Ackermann's Repository of the Arts in its 21-year history, spanning from 1809-1828, is depicted here. Ackermann's, which covered the arts, literature, commerce, manufacturing, politics, and fashion, was one of the most popular periodicals of its time. The quality of the colored prints in Ms. Gayle's book is excellent. The print book is oversized, roughly the size of sheet of computer paper. The book follows chronologically. In addition to the lovely prints are the original commentary that appeared with them. Oftentimes, the furniture maker or draper will be mentioned by name, and sometimes their addresses are, too. Ms. Gayle has not edited these descriptions, leaving them just as they appeared early in the nineteenth century. The more novel a piece of furniture, the more likely it would be included in Ackermann's. There's a floor-stand globe that turns into a desk, an armed library chair that turns into library steps, an invalid chair that turns into a bed, and Merlin's Mechanical Chair. That invalid's chair could be adapted to carry a small cannon! That is not to say that there are not many pieces of lovely furniture in the edition. The pseudo state beds were really beautiful, and another of my personal favorites was one suggested by the Regent's desk. I did not find surfaces where one writes referred to as a desk, however. The small, elegant Regent's desk was called the Carlton House Table. No way would we refer to it as a table! As the author of novels set in the era of Jane Austen, I have found all of Ms. Gayle's books to be a useful addition to my research library.

It explains in words and pictures the names of the furnishings, their uses and some of the history behind them.
