It follows that a study of symmetry (the observation that physical laws remain unchanged when action is viewed from different perspectives or transformations) is a useful way to demonstrate the development of contemporary theories like superstrings and grand unified out of the seeming chaos of the quantum world. Zee delineates classical mechanics, relativity, the quantum, and the strange new world of subatomic particles with style and wit. Gauge Symmetries for Blondes By Natalia Ilyin After buying Dr. Zee's book, I became worried that I would not be able to understand it and would thereby lose respect for my brain, one of my last bankable attributes. The book lay on the side table for a year. Finally, on a whim, I sat down to read it early in the evening-- about dinner-time. The next thing I knew, the windows were getting light and I couldn't feel my feet. I barely made it through algebra, have no science background, and a scientist would probably tell me that I have no real business reading a book like Dr. Zee's. But his explanations create a case for a greater aesthetics that is so compelling-- a beauty not tangential or decorative, but essential to the architecture of physical reality-- that I wholeheartedly recommend his book to every thinking person I know. And that includes designers. And blondes.

Weiss I have spent most of my career studying simple groups --finite and algebraic simple groups -- and the geometricspaces on which they act and I have found it impossible not to becarried away by the sheer beauty of these structuresand by the sense that they must have some reality in naturebeyond a mathematician's thoughts. This book allowed meto have a little sense of how true this might be (farbeyond what I knew just from newspapers). As a group theoristwho has thought a lot about the same 'philosophical' issues,I couldn't put this book down. It is full of charming storiesand good humor. In my opinion, this book is a model of good scientific writing.

Wonderful aid for the uninitiated By Robert I was looking for a book that would help me understand the development of particle physics up to and including the recent finding of the spoor of the Higgs boson (the so-called God particle). I had gone (with difficulty) through Roger Penrose's exposition of particle physics theory in the "Road to Reality" and, with less difficulty, Peter Voit's "Not Even Wrong". The latter is a fine book but it did not make the development of various theories clear, i.e. it left me hanging as to what was actually involved in the mathematical--group theoretical--development. Zee's book cleared up all the hidden steps, and amazingly, did this without casting off a haze of equations to hide what is really happening. In short, the book is intelligible, accurate (as I'll testify, for those parts of group theory and physics with which I'm familiar) and written with grace and wit. It should be required reading--along with Rosenblum's and Kuttner's "Quantum Enigma" and Peter Voit's "Not Even Wrong"--for anyone who wants to understand contemporary physics, whatever his/her background in physics/math might be.Let me add that my own background is in physics (56 years) and I have published papers involving quantum mechanics (density matrix theory) and group theory, and I know, from having taught graduate courses, how difficult it is to give a clear, non-formalistic picture of theory. Judging from his book, one would have to say that Zee must be a masterful teacher.

By Dr. Chet Weld This book was received three days after requesting shipment and my experience with the seller was positive. For such a short book, “Hello My Name Is Wayne” packs a wallop. Weld outlines the long term plan for huge marketing success by suggesting numerous details of business networking and effective follow-up skills. These skills are simple and practical. This reviewer was surprised he never thought of them, e.g., at events you attend, “Say the other person’s name at least three times in a conversation,” “Don’t try to sell your service,” and “Know the kind of problems you can solve,” to name but a few skills. Because effective follow-up skills are essential to successful marketing, Weld provides a long list of them. Weld also contrasts the plans of “Alice” whose business is a booming success with those of “Tony” whose business is not growing. If successful marketing is your goal, this information and more provide reason enough to read “Hello My Name Is Wayne.”

A great manga starter book By Brandy Cross I received this book as a gift from my sister, I like to draw and I love manga so I was curious about it and started it immediately. The introduction mainly tells you about the history of manga, different types of manga, and then you get different art techniques and tips which was actually really helpful, before a big section with over 100 lessons on drawing different parts of the anatomy, and then lessons on drawing everything you learned into a character! It even has a game to integrate different styles.Pros:1. It's very well laid out and easy to follow, I'm not naturally talented, but the book is not confusing for me and the steps are all there, no "Draw a circle - now draw the rest of the owl" type stuff. Very clear instructions, line by line drawing, techniques, everything that can actually show you how to get from point A. to point B. And with your own work!2. Everything is adorable. Usually when you buy a how-to-draw book it's a little bit intimidating, but this one's very easy going, the art is fun and very well done, and adds to the instructions rather than just being there to show you how much the artist is better than you.3. I really like that the artist has a YouTube channel with additional instructions4. The information on drawing eyes, hands, and faces is really extensive, more so than I was expecting. Because these are all difficult parts for me, the extra time and lessons were very much appreciated.5. The book is surprisingly big, there are lots of lessons. It says 128 pages but every page is huge, and you get drawing lessons on each one.6. The game is a lot of fun, and really great if you're like me and don't know what to draw7. I can definitely draw manga characters using this bookCons:1. I will have to buy more art supplies. The tips on inking and different types of pencils really make me want to up my game.2. While there are a ton of lessons, I do wish it had a bit more information on drawing outfits,10/10 would buy again. I'm already seeing improvements on my manga style, and I can't wait to keep practicing.

By Melissa This book is well put together and I highly recommend it.The instructions are easy to understand and is packed with useful little tips for improving your manga drawings. The pages are filled with step-by-step illustrations to help beginners follow along with the instructions. You never get lost between steps and the chapters/content is well organized to help with your progression.Aside from demonstrating the basics on how to draw manga characters (normal sized and chibi), the book covers a variety of topics such as- creating hair styles- drawing clothing details properly- mapping facial expressions correctly- manga inking and shading techniques- idea generation for interesting and unique characters- creating polished pictures- creating well constructed manga pages with multiple panelsI'm satisfied with my purchase. ^_^

I think it's worth the money just for the art if you like chibis and manga. Cute drawings on every page.The fire athlete is so hot! The instructions are easy to follow, lots of step by step and I didn't get lost once, and everything was so much fun, I really wish I could go get in person lessons now. I follow Mistiqarts on YouTube which is why I pre-ordered it and then it arrived a full month before it said it would ship. I was really surprised by how big the book is, it says it's only 128 pages but there are a LOT of lessons and they're all really big and easy to see, not like the little pocket drawing guides you see a lot. Super excited so far and I can't wait to draw something else.

Travellers's tales from a triumphant Finland, edited by an unashamed Fennophile By voi vittu This is the concluding volume of Tony Lurcock's trilogy of anthologies of writings by British visitors to Finland from 1760 to 1941. Each volume has followed much the same pattern: an historical and social introduction to the period in question and to the types of travellers it attracted; extracts from the travellers' tales with background and biographical introductions; maps, notes, bibliographies and an index of places. The present volume covers the period from Finnish independence in 1917 to the British declaration of war on Finland in 1941, both events neatly occurring on 6 December. Although we still have examples of the sailor and the rugged traveller on a budget, we now have a new type of visitor: the professional who has a specific purpose for visiting Finland - medical, musical, architectural, or with an interest in social questions. The period is book-ended with conflict, so we also have the spies entering or leaving Finland during the early days of the Soviet Union, and then we have the volunteers and politicians who came to Finland for the Winter War. Mr Lurcock is to be congratulated on bringing this project, which has involved decades of study, to such a satisfactory conclusion. The books are both readable and enjoyable but also valuable works of scholarship and it is unlikely they will ever be superseded. I do, however, have several minor reservations. Mr Lurcock's texts are all taken from books (guided, no doubt, to some extent by Hilkka Aaltonen's bibliographical research), and not from other media such as newspapers, journals, magazines, unpublished letters and journals, and so on. Texts from media of this kind would tend to have a greater raciness and immediacy than the sometimes longwinded and stodgy book-length accounts of a journey remembered, sometimes at a great distance of time. A second reservation is that Mr Lurcock has a tendency to go along with the almost universal rosy and positive picture of Finland presented by his visitors. To take an example, he says of the medical doctor, Halliday Sutherland: "He is alert to social conditions, to the 'relatively small' discrepancies between the rich and the poor, the absence of slums and of any 'submerged tenth' or 'problem class'." This is complete balderdash. There was considerable poverty and social inequality and deprivation in the inter-war years in both town and countryside, and there were the slums of Kallio in Helsinki, Pispala in Tampere, in Lahti and elsewhere, all with their attendant social problems and criminality and high incidences of TB and other infectious diseases. Mr Lurcock seems to be accepting Sutherland's conclusions, presumably on the grounds that Sutherland was there and he wasn't. But surely an editor's job is to know better and to point out when his traveller has got it wrong, either because of incomplete information or because he has accepted as truth myths or prejudices implanted by his hosts. Mr Lurcock is an unashamed Fennophile, but he is doing neither Finland nor the general reader any service by allowing completely erroneous judgements pass without comment. In this context I took particular exception to one of Mr Lurcock's concluding comments, and one which is symptomatic of the approach of the book as a whole: "W. H. Auden dismissed the 1930s as 'a low dishonest decade', but for Finland it had been little short of triumphant." In fact, the 1930s was a particularly nasty and poisonous decade in Finnish history. There was considerable persecution and intimidation of those classes and groups thought to have been sympathetic to the losing side in the Civil War (estimated by Anthony Upton as 40% of the population), and there were the activities of a range of ultra-nationalistic and neo-Fascist organisations which threatened both to overthrow the new republic and argued for the creation of a Greater Finland extending to the Urals (a considerable provocation to the Soviet Union and one of the driving forces behind Finland's war of territorial aggrandisement from 1941 to 1944 as a co-belligerent of Nazi Germany). All of this has been well-documented by Upton and by Finnish historians, and I cannot think of any modern commentator, even the most rabidly nationalistic Finn, who would describe the 1930s as a 'triumphant' decade. Finally, I was puzzled as to why Mr Lurcock has concluded his study at 1941 - he has told us that the present volume is the final one. Apart from the neat symmetry of 6 December for beginning and ending dates, he tells us that there were no British visitors left in Finland by 1941 and that this year marks "the end of the British discovery of modern Finland; it would be many years before the next generation of travellers arrived to discover the new republic." Well, Diana Ashcroft came in 1947 and left a marvellous record of life in post-war Kajaani. Bill Mead returned the same year, no longer an impecunious student but now a serious agricultural geographer, and began his study of the resettlement of the Karelian refugees, a programme which he justifiably called one of the great triumphs of Finnish history. The journalists Wendy Hall and Katherine Whitehorn came in 1949 and 1953 respectively and wrote of their experiences. And there are presumably several others I have not heard of. It could be that Mr Lurcock does not have the stomach for the less 'triumphant' bleak and drab post-war years and the subsequent inglorious period of Finlandization. Hopefully, someone will take over the baton from Mr Lurcock and continue the story to the present day. Let us hope that she does as good a job as Mr Lurcock has..

Dr. Allen introduces the critical concepts and issues in layman's terms, assuming a minimum level of technical knowledge expected of today's professionals. He moves from simple concepts to more complex with an informal, readable style, sharing practical insights in a memorable way.You can't manage what you don't understand, and this targeted book does a great job of bringing foundational understanding of Cloud Computing to not only Project and Program Managers, but to their leaders, up through the C-Suite. Chapters end by putting the knowledge gained into a threefold context relevant to all professional managers: questions the PM should ask the team, the PMBOK Process Groups, and the PMBOK Knowledge Areas. About the Author MARTHA WARD was professor of Anthropology at the University of New Orleans for 42 years. Among other activities, she taught the first course in Women’s Studies and Gender in Louisiana.  She has survived the glass ceiling and academic politics, the Sexual Revolution, two marriages, Hurricane Katrina, and the intensities of motherhood ---among many similar experiences.  She has done fieldwork in and published her work in Micronesia, Tirol in the Austrian-Italian Alps, on the politics of reproduction in the United States, and on health care disparities for poor women.  The most recent project is a radical ethnographic and archival reconstruction of Voodoo in New Orleans, centering on the lives of its two famous practitioners, a mother and her daughter both named Marie Laveau.  Post-retirement she loves on her grandchildren and her looms where she weaves in honor of the work of women through time and space.MONICA EDELSTEIN earned her Ph.D. in Anthropology from Tulane University in 2001. Her research includes an investigation of spirit possession practices among Ethiopian immigrants in Israel and gendered practices in Judaism. Before earning her Ph.D., she worked as a community organizer and AIDS and reproductive rights activist in Dallas and New Orleans. She has taught anthropology courses on gender, women, Africa, and Native North America for both Tulane and the University of New Orleans and works as an anthropology subject matter expert for Pearson’s textbook publications. She has collaborated on World Full of Women since the 4th edition.  She resides in New Orleans with her husband and two daughters.

The language is user- friendly and expansive. The book details everything including marketing and promotion which are the two areas that i knew that i needed help with most. A proper and important focus on social networking platforms allowed many light bulbs to go off in my head as getting that right can make or break my efforts.Spreading the news to e-mail lists, pre-orders, finishing touches and Promotional websites were all touched upon in great detail.The author included a lot of answers about the free process of Kindle Promotion and how to position before, during and after that period.I have written twenty-two books but still learned a lot from this thorough book. About the Author Henry Beam Piper was an American science fiction author. He wrote many short stories and several novels. He is best known for his extensive Terro-Human Future History series of stories and a shorter series of "Paratime" alternate history tales.John D. Clark has worked with development NGOs, the World Bank, universities, and as and adviser to governments on development and civil society issues. His career has focused on poverty reduction and bridging the gap between grassroots organizations and official agencies. He is currently Visiting Fellow at the Centre for Civil Society, London School of Economics, and has served on a Task Force advising UK Prime Minister Tony Blair on Africa. From 1992 to 2000 he worked for the World Bank as manager of the NGO and Civil Society Unit and then as Lead Social Development Specialist for East Asia. Before that he worked in NGOs for 18 years, mostly with Oxfam UK where he led campaigns operations and managed Oxfam s advocacy with official agencies and Northern governments on aid, debt and trade issues.

By David Besides being an exciting story told well, this book should be interesting to all SF fans because it was the first real example of what we now call "Military SF." It predated Heinlein's "Starship Troopers" by several years. Jerry Pournelle was strongly influenced by reading this and other Beam Piper works. (I think it is no coincidence that a minor character in this book is named Col. Falkenberg!)So many aspects of this book are repeated again and again in works by Pournelle, Weber, Drake, etc.: The story is told from the point of view of a dedicated military officer. Military hardware and methods are presented in convincing detail. Military rites and customs, the implicit trust and comradeship between military people, and the natural distrust between military and civilian authorities -- all are implicit to the plot. Military ways of thinking are forever contrasted to their civilian counterparts, so that the civvy ways of thought are shown to be hopelessly fuzzy-minded and soft-hearted, incapable of handling a crisis. Sexuality is repressed to the Boy-Scout level -- well, perhaps that's because it was published in the 1950s.And above all, aliens are gorily slaughtered in numbers. Much of the fun and the punch to this narrative lies in the fact that it's OKAY to wreak bloody mayhem on enemies, if they are nonhuman and attacked you first. John Ringo is a recent author who uses exactly the same method to add "kick" to a narrative. Ringo's books seem always to be asking, how inventively can we waste a battalion of lizard-headed gooks?Piper showed how to ask and answer that question first, here in ULLER, where you will find the original pattern for the plot styles of Ringo, Weber, Drake, et al.

It is set on Nifheim and Uller during the early years of the Terran Federation. Uller is a habitable planet similar to Earth, although the fauna is based on silicone chains and the weather is fierce.. Nifheim is a nearby planet with a flourine biochemistry and loaded with heavy metals.In this novel, Sidney Harrington is Govenoral-General of the Chartered Uller Company. He is the highest Terran official on the planet.Carlos von Schlicten is an Argentine citizen of German ancestry. He is a General within the Army of the Chartered Uller Company.Lourenco Gomes is the head of the mining project on Nifheim.Juan Murillo is a seismologist on Nifheim. He is a third or fourth generation Martian.Paula Quinton has a Doctorate in extraterrestrial sociography. She is also a field agent for the Exterrestrial's Rights Association.Mohammed Ferriera is the local ERA agent in Konkrook.Gotkrink is a Uller native, the son/daughter of King Orgzild of Keegark.In this story, Paula is visiting Nifheim before continuing to Uller. The local miners are entertaining her with a front seat at four nuclear explosions. They are blowing out some heavy metals from the mantle.After returning from emplacing the devices, Dr. Murillo seats himself at the console, but allows Gotkrink to leave the room. Dr.Gomes starts the countdown. The explosions are impressive, but the burning hydrogen is fantastic.Three months later, Paula is on Uller visiting a native home. A riot starts and endangers both herself and Ferriera. Von Schlicten is returning from a field inspection and has his driver set down his command car on the plaza.Ferriera has fallen, but Paula is swing a bolo at the natives. She wounds one, but another grabs her with all four hands. She kicks it in the groin. Then Von Schlicten sticks his pistol into its mouth and blows out his brains.Paula mentions the presence of a dog within the household. The Terrans have been looking for Stalin, the Governor-General's collie, as well as a goat and some rabbits that have mysteriously disappeared. After she heard the dog barking, her host had gone out of the house. Apparently that was when the riot started.Von Schlicten explains about the lost animals and suggests that the native host had started the riot. The native was a known activist and agitator. Paula and Ferriera were just at the wrong place at the wrong time.Later, the Governor-General is poisoned by a native servant. The Terrans quickly decide that the natives had been using the Terran animals to find the right poison. When the news of the Governor-General's death is broadcast, native troops mutiny throughout the Terran zone.This tale is based on the Sepoy Mutiny against the East India Company in 1857. Yet the technology is a mix of twentieth century and future devices. Combat cars are armed with fifteen millimeter machine guns, but fly through the air with contragravityThis novelette was published in the Twayne Triplet The Petrified Planet with "Daughter of Earth" and "The Long View". The planets were described in a article provided to each author before beginning the stories, but the tales vary in details about the natives.The author wrote other stories within this universe. The next installment in this sequence is Four-Day Planet.Highly recommended for Piper fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of strange planets, armed uprisings, and a bit of romance. To facilitate the exploitation of these worlds, trading companies are established. On the world of Uller, the Chartered Uller Company has been running matters much as the British East India Company ran India in the Eighteenth Century. While local potentates rule, humans profit and attempt to better the lot of the locals, whom they derisively call "Geeks." However, not all of the four-armed reptile-oid natives are pleased about the arrangement. When rebellion explodes, it is up to General Carlos von Schlichten, commander of the Company's army, to hold Uller for the Chartered Uller Company and the Terran Federation.This is an intelligent, and thought provoking book. The action is gripping, with the fate of the world hanging in the balance. The author's use of the old trading company paradigm in the future is nothing short of brilliant. As an added bonus, the first chapter of the book contains notes describing the silicone world of Uller and fluorine world of Niflheim, with comments on the chemistry and evolution of life on the world: this written by Dr John D. Clark, scientist and one of the discoverers of sulfa.In certain ways, this book is out of date (the scene involving scientists using their sliderules is humorous), but not in any way that damages the believability of the story. So, if you are looking for a sci-fi book with a gripping story, and a highly exotic setting, then this book is for you!

Tremendous insights from two authors who are very well versed as both entrepreneurs and investors. I wish I would have had access to this book two and a half years ago when I started my journey as CEO of SavvyDox.At that time, we all thought we had a world beating idea and didn't want anyone to borrow it before we got it to market. As outlined in the book, running in stealth mode is not the recommended approach. Get out there and get some customers - get their feedback, incorporate it into your product, and create something that customers will love. Their endorsement will help it spread like wildfire.There is a fine line between making sure your product is fully baked before launching marketing and sales and having a product that is "good enough" to start generating interest.As the authors point out, there are thousands upon thousands of good ideas out there. The real test of an entrepreneur is the execution. The execution is what attracts investors.Great read - highly recommended

I particularly liked the sections that provided two viewpoints (investor and founder) on the same startup.I agree with most of the book, however I disagree with the argument that adoption of a product is driven by its degree of disruptiveness. The argument is that people adopted MP3 players faster than telephones, so MP3 players must have been the more disruptive technology. I think that the introduction of telephones was actually far more disruptive than switching from CDs to MP3s, however the infrastructure needed to implement this change (telephones, poles, wires, switches, etc.) was much more substantial and therefore slower to implement. It's a minor point, though, and doesn't affect most of the other arguments in the book.
