Anca Vlasopolos' magnificent collection of poetry is a meditation on map-making and on migration, which pays homage to two scientists, Gerardus Mercator and Nathaniel Bowditch, whose work was enormously useful but unwittingly helped lead to conquest, decimation, and in some cases extinction of native habitats, peoples, and non-human life. These poems celebrate life that often passes unnoticed (intertidal creatures, migrating and "common" birds, amphibians, reptiles, non-charismatic mammals, and disregarded humans), advocate for its worth, habitats, and right to existence.

Review A significant contribution to the literature of the ecological imagination, that brings human histories of territorial mastery together with nature's flitting shape-shifting creations, through poetics as precise as the maps the poems recreate and as delicate as the dragonfly wings they celebrate: this is Vlasopolos' finest work in a long line of strong books. --Shirley Geok-lin Lim, winner of the Commonwealth Poetry Prize and author of Among the White Moon Faces, winner of the American Book Award.Anca Vlasopolos has a researcher s gaze and a birdwatcher s ear as she takes up navigation as a theme in Cartographies of Scale (and Wing). She describes early mapmakers trying to get hold of the world s vastness while animals find their way by a mysterious instinct, a world we have no eyes for. Her poems are sure-handed, but she makes way for uncertainty: we see this mortal world / for one cosmic particle of time. --Ellen Foos, publisher of Ragged Sky Press, books editor at Princeton University Pres

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. there is a great deal of humor here By Gnome du Plumb Vlasopolos begins this collection addressing our Edge Gilt, our cutting knowledge of a fractured world. Our dissection of the problem leads to guilt -- didn't so much of the trouble begin with greed for gold? The collection starts with gilt/guilt, but it doesn't stop there. Paralysis is no triumph. It's not building anything. And she very much wants to build, to "patch up" a planet in peril. Ordering and measuring and play are crucial to that, the poet knows. I'm sure that's why there are so many quiet jokes and puns in these poems. From the title itself, to a nod at Nerval's pet lobster, to the final re-writing of William Carlos Williams' insistence to so much depending on a red wheelbarrow, there is a great deal of humor here. To me humor is the fluid of rejuvenation, which is what fills the juicy heart of this collection. Let's encourage this kind of effort and art.

It may be right outside my door, but it takes poems like these to make me see clearly the flight pattern of a bird, the roar of a wave, the beauty in a slip of plant or a sliver of moon or the smoothness of stone.
