On the road to becoming a successful entrepreneur, Bob Diener confronted a lot of tough issues: how to treat employees, how to please customers, whether or not to cut corners, whether to follow the temptation of an unsavory deal… Although he had no formal business training, Bob found solutions to all these issues and reached the top using a simple strategy that is available to anyone. His secret? Careful study of “the best guidebook to running a successful business ever written”: the Bible. Difficult dilemmas become easy when viewed from the biblical perspective. “Our work is meaningless unless to do good,” counsels the Book of Ecclesiastes. Companies that abide by the Bible’s rules of business tend to be the ones that prosper long term. Companies that cheat their workers and partners, defraud their customers, and operate unethically don’t stay in business very long. You too can become a successful entrepreneur by following the tips, strategies, and biblical principles outlined in this exploration of best practices for market research, labor management, business negotiations, risk mitigation, watching the bottom line, and, perhaps most important of all, leaving a lasting legacy. Bob Diener and his partner David Litman created the company that became hotels.com, which pioneered hotel distribution online. When Bob and his partner took the company public in 2000, the stock price soared from $16 to $90 in one of the most successful IPOs ever. Having gone on to cofound getaroom.com, Bob is a familiar presence on national media outlets, offering his sage advice on the travel industry.

A terrific guide to achieving TRUE success in business and in life By Anastasia Yecke What is the difference between a run-of-the-mill entrepreneur and a biblical entrepreneur? The latter “pursues biblical values and charitable giving as the primary goal. Profit is still a goal, but not for its own sake: profit is pursued for the purpose of giving a portion to those in need.” (page xi)As a longtime resident of Miami, I am familiar with the charitable works of the Diener family both locally and in Israel and I purchased this book after hearing Bob speak at an event. I had expected to enjoy the read but it FAR exceeded my expectations. The book is divided into four parts: Starting up a Business based on Biblical Principles, Using Biblical Principles to Grow your Business, Building and Maintaining a Solid Business Reputation, and Keeping a Biblical Perspective on Wealth and Success. At the end of each chapter, the key points appear in a box as a checklist for easy reference.Throughout the book, Bob quotes Scripture and Jewish scholars whose words of wisdom are on target with the points he is making. However, this book can be read and appreciated by ANYONE who has the desire to implement ethical principles in their business and life.In Part One, Bob presents a compelling case for doing one’s homework before deciding to start up a business: know your talents and be willing to work hard. Research your competitors. Develop a unique value proposition and hire people who share your vision. In each chapter, he weaves in his own real-life experiences with biblically-based instruction.Part Two focuses on practical and ethical ways to make your business grow. Being a good steward of funds is key – whether they are startup funds loaned to you by others or profits from the business itself. Bob has created a culture of minimizing debt and waste in each business he has started, and recounts some amusing (and creative) anecdotes in chapters 7 and 8. Also crucial to growth is being able to accept criticism from your business partners and employees, and providing outstanding customer service. So you’ve built a healthy business…Part Three discusses how to maintain a solid reputation, starting with honesty. Chapter 12 contains several accounts of people and companies who were confronted with a situation in which they had a choice to make: take the high road or the easy road? Bob argues that short-term loss often leads to long-term gain, again using real-life examples from his own considerable business experiences. “By being honest and building your reputation for integrity, you can grow your business in the most cost-effective way. This is much better than advertising and spending a fortune on marketing. Let your customers be your marketing arm. Treat them fairly and honestly and they will want to help you.” (p. 87-88)Perhaps the most important part of the book is Part Four, in which everything is brought into an eternal perspective. Wealth can be gone in an instant, as the Great Recession taught us firsthand. “Money can be lost anytime. While you are earning it, make your business more meaningful by helping others with a portion of the profits.” (p. 105) This is not merely talk; Bob donates a large percentage of his company’s annual profits to charity through his foundation. In Chapter 16, he describes various ways to give back to the community. And in Chapter 18, he discusses things to consider when preparing to sell your business – not only ensuring that your wealth transfers to the next generation, but also your values. To this end, the final chapter discusses setting up what Bob calls an “Ethical Will”, which specifies the formative events and people who have most influenced your character. The Afterword is also of tremendous value. Bob makes a compelling argument that true success is achieving the right balance of family, study, work and community. He states that “Success is not just achieving wealth but how we use that wealth. Did we use it only for ourselves, or did we use it to help others and improve our communities?...When we have wealth, we become a steward of that wealth…Earning it without spending it right is not success.” (p. 135-136)While most of us will not achieve anything close to the material success of Bob Diener and his business partner David Litman, we can ALL make the decision to be people of integrity in our business dealings and throughout our lives, leading by example and using our skills and talents to enrich our families and communities in ways that truly matter.
