It has really wide margins along the edges (limiting the size of the boxes) and then the available space to draw the comic is limited by the binding. Much of the boxing occurs where the bend is at the seam, making it hard (especially for kids) to draw in that space. Fixing the margin could have prevented this issue. Will not buy again.

An international survey exploring the many ways in which painting has been re-approached, re-imagined, and challenged by today’s artists

Painting is a continually expanding and evolving medium. The radical changes that have taken place since the 1960s and 1970s―the period that saw the shift from a modernist to a postmodernist visual language―have led to its reinvigoration as a practice, lending it an energy and diversity that persists today. In Painting Now, renowned critic and art historian Suzanne Hudson offers an intelligent and original survey of contemporary painting―a critical snapshot that brings together more than 200 artists from around the world whose work is defining the ideas and aesthetics that characterize the painting of our time. Hudson’s rigorous inquiry takes shape through the analysis of a range of internationally renowned painters, alongside reproductions of their key works to illustrate the concepts being discussed. These luminaries include Franz Ackermann, Michaël Borremans, Chuck Close, Angela de la Cruz, Subodh Gupta, Julie Mehretu, Vik Muniz, Takashi Murakami, Elizabeth Peyton, Wilhelm Sasnal, Luc Tuymans, Zhang Xiaogang, and many others. Organized into six thematic chapters exploring aspects of contemporary painting such as appropriation, attitude, production and distribution, the body, painting about painting, and introducing additional media into painting, this is an essential volume for art history enthusiasts, critics, and practitioners. 230 illustrations, 224 in color

14 of 17 people found the following review helpful. Good for what it is, just not what I hoped for. By Jill Miller While this book includes many images of paintings, none of them are full page and a great majority of them are far too small to offer any meaningful insight into the paintings. This book is essentially a very well written and researched collection of essays about 6 distinct themes within contemporary painting practice. It would have been better to publish this as a softcover at half the price. Eventually, I will get this book, but I can't see paying what they are asking for it now. Buy it used one day or wait for it to be released as a softcover.

By Theresa As a young painter, I found this book immensely helpful in terms of encapsulating current trends in painting and introducing me to many new painters and their practices. The book has beautiful, high-quality illustrations and an accompanying text by Suzanne Hudson. Most artists get a single paragraph, which makes the book useful as a reference to dip into, but the six chapters flow very well as essays. As art criticism goes, this is jargon-free and quite insightful, aiming at objectivity and considering each artist on their own terms.

Met this guy, attended one of his lectures, and realized he was out of his freaking mind. Oh and his art work is mediocre. Seeing his name immediately discredited the rest of the book for me.

What is VALIS? This question is at the heart of Philip K. Dick’s groundbreaking novel, the first book in his defining trilogy. When a beam of pink light begins giving a schizophrenic man named Horselover Fat (who just might also be known as Philip K. Dick) visions of an alternate Earth where the Roman Empire still reigns, he must decide whether he is crazy or whether a godlike entity is showing him the true nature of the world.

VALIS is essential listening for any true Philip K. Dick fan, a novel that Roberto Bolaño called “more disturbing than any novel by [Carson] McCullers.” By the end, like Dick himself, you will be left wondering what is real, what is fiction, and just what the price is for divine inspiration.

Valis, by Philip K. Dick

Amazon.com Review The first of Dick's three final novels (the others are Divine Invasion and The Transmigration of Timothy Archer). Known as science fiction only for lack of a better category, "Valis" takes place in our world and may even be semi-autobiographical.

The proponent of the novel, Horselover Fat, is thrust into a theological quest when he receives communion in a burst of pink laser light. From the cancer ward of a bay area hospital to the ranch of a fraudulent charismatic religious figure who turns out to have a direct com link with God, Dick leads us down the twisted paths of Gnostic belief, mixed with his own bizarre and compelling philosophy. Truly an eye opening look at the nature of consciousness and divinity.

From Publishers Weekly The quest for God is the binding theme of this trilogy. The "funny and painful and sometimes brilliant" VALIS(anagram) finds protagonist and Dick alter-ego Horselover Fat unable to reconcile human suffering with his belief in God. Invasion is a "fascinating and highly readable" vision of Armageddon, blending New Testament, Kabbalah and Dick's own worldview. In Transmigration , Angel Archer reminisces about her father-in-law, Timothy, an Episcopal bishop obsessed with a set of ancient scrolls that shed faith-threatening new light on Jesus: "This finely crafted, odd but compelling book demonstrates Dick's great erudition, keen human insight and subtle ironic sense of humor," said PW. Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From the Inside Flap Valis is the first book in Philip K. Dick's incomparable final trio of novels (the others being are The Divine Invasion and The Transmigration of Timothy Archer). This disorienting and bleakly funny work is about a schizophrenic hero named Horselover Fat; the hidden mysteries of Gnostic Christianity; and reality as revealed through a pink laser. Valis is a theological detective story, in which God is both a missing person and the perpetrator of the ultimate crime.

"The fact that what Dick is entertaining us about is reality and madness, time and death, sin and salvation--this has escaped most critics. Nobody notices that we have our own homegrown Borges, and have had him for thirty years."--Ursula K. Le Guin, New Republic

It took me 3 tries before I could get through the first 70 or so pages. I feel that many of the reviewers here are overlooking a major part of the story. Yes, it's full of endless religious speculation and it is terrifically solipsistic and postmodern, but beyond all that, it is one of the most heart-wrenching books about grief that I have ever read. VALIS is not about YHWH in pink lasers, or the Gnostic gospels (Well, _of course_ it's about both of those things, just bear with me), it is about a man who has lost, and because of that, is lost. He cannot allow himself to understand death and goes on a quest to understand everything but. It's a brilliant novel, not one for everybody, but certainly one for the ages.

Not for the Religiously Timid By CV Rick Philip K Dick experienced something profound in 1974 after a long battle with drug addiction, depression, and paranoia . . . what that experience was can best be described as a hallucinatory encounter with God. This book may be fiction as it's labeled, but more likely it's as close to autobiography as Dick could remember of his life from 1974 to 1978.Many people consider this to be an unreadable volume because of its surreal journey through the mind of one with some sort of severe psychosis, and of its wild switches from first to third person, not to mention the confusion with which Dick puts himself in the plot as both the protagonist and narrator, but those being two different people. Add to that a heavy dose of gnostic gospel and widely varied obscure theological elements from many cultures, and you have a book few can even understand in the first reading. That said, I loved it. Why? Because its actually a journey of awareness through a universe where time doesn't really exist, chaos reigns because the creator is insane, and Philip K Dick has trouble keeping it together yet manages to birth an entire religious awakening at the same time. Before reading it, please familiarize yourself with Taoism, Buddhism, Gnosticism and even Jungian Psychoanalysis as well as various creation mythologies - perhaps a little light reading in the Joseph Campbell library - then dive in and see what can happen when this is all revealed to one man in a beam of light.- CV Rick

Arcane Religious Philosophy as Schizophrenic Quasi-Biography By doomsdayer520 This book comes from the later stages of PKD's career, when he probably didn't even care about making his books accessible to the masses. That's something that up-and-comers have to do, and by this point PKD was surely trying to sort out his own personal philosophies in narrative form. You can see the websites for several different PKD fan clubs for speculation on what was going through his mind when he wrote this one. Here we have musings on religious visions, spiritual quests, and arcane ancient Greek and Gnostic Christian philosophies. Obviously one would also suspect experimentation in the arts of mind expansion, though in real life (if such a thing exists) PKD hated to be branded in that way. These are all played out by the typically off-center characters and curveball speculative plotlines of classic PKD.This book can be quite frustrating at times, with long philosophical passages that are merely a mishmash of ideas PKD had come across in his personal studies, and that lead to philosophy overload but with little direction or grand overall insight to be found. Plus you have to wonder if this book is a literal or merely mental autobiography, or not an autobiography at all but one of PKD's subversive storytelling techniques, designed to warp the reader's mind. This book is told in both first and third person by the same character, a schizophrenic with two personalities that operate simultaneously and even interact with each other (a feature of several PKD stories). Here one of the two selves is the increasingly insane Horselover Fat and the other is his sane alter ego, who happens to be the author PKD himself. Ultimately, the mass philosophical confusion of this novel morphs into sheer fascination, albeit in a pretty cluttered way.Note that the make-believe movie seen by the characters in this book was expanded by PKD into another novel - *Radio Free Albemuth* - which was not published during his lifetime. A story within a story within a quasi-mental-autobiography, as it were.

PDF Ebook Joni Sternbach: Surf Site Tin Type, by Lyle Rexer, April Watson, Chris Malloy

Surf Site Tin Type is an homage to a sport, a way of life, and a tribute to the people who practice it. Over the past decade Brooklyn-based photographer Joni Sternbach has traveled around the world, creating tintype portraits of contemporary surfers using the nineteenth-century wet-plate collodion process. Stunning in their detail, these one-of-a-kind images evoke the romance and adventure of surfing, and the bold individualism of the men and women who live to ride the waves. Working with a large-format camera and using hand-poured plates that are prepared and developed on location, Sternbach has profiled a fascinating range of surfers, both well known and unknown, on prized surfing beaches. Locations include Montauk and Malibu in the United States, Byron Bay in Australia and Cornwall in England. Typical surfing photographs are action shots, riding the mighty wave and in vivid color, whereas Sternbach turns to a historic technique to capture something essential and even primordial in the portraits and settings, recalling a tradition of nineteenth-century anthropological photography. Surf Site Tin Type features texts by noted photo critic and historian Lyle Rexer, curator April M. Watson, and Chris Malloy and Johnny Abegg, both well-known surfers and filmmakers.

The perfect gift for the photographer and surfer... Buy this book! Joni Steinerbach is a genius at this art form..

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. the photographs are portrait photography at its best, a window into the soul By Jonathan Rosen This book is pure poetry. Although the subject matter is surfing, the photographs are portrait photography at its best, a window into the soul, of not just the subject, but the environment at large. It's a meandering sublime journey of sun baked long boarders in another dimension.

This is a beautiful, soulful book that captures the introspective By Longboarder This is a beautiful, soulful book that captures the introspective, quiet heart of surfing and surfers -- the part the flashy magazines and websites don't cover. If you're a surfer, this book is a must have. If you're not a surfer, enjoy the beautiful images and the loveliness of this book as a physical object. (And who knows -- maybe it will inspire you ....

Nice piece of mid-century Sci Fi adventure By Rebecca Menes I started this story in an old issue of Astounding Stories that was kicking around - and was very happy to find the rest of it on Kindle. A quick read, really a novella. A solid page turner with lots of action, fun plot twists, and a satisfactory ending. If you like old Heinlein's I think you will like this.

24 of 26 people found the following review helpful. It's Back... By Claire Connelly I read and re-read my original paperback containing the three novels until it was tattered and torn. I recently received a shipment containing many of my old books, including this one. When I saw its condition, I wanted to replace it, but found it was out of print. Then I stumbled on a copy of this edition in a specialty bookstore and had to have it.The books are classics -- the main character, Jason dinAlt, is a gambler and a scoundrel, with an ability to influence luck in his favor. He's recruited to help raise money for the inhabitants of Pyrrus, and has to follow the girl sent to arrange the deal to see the place for himself. In the second book, dinAlt is kidnapped by a self-righteous man angry at his home planet's making dinAlt a hero, inspiring others to gamble. He plans to take dinAlt back to face trial, but things go awry and they both end up enslaved on a primitive desert world. DinAlt's luck and knowledge allow him to survive. In the third and final book, many of the key people from Pyrrus join dinAlt in taming other planets. Their first assignment is a tough one, a planet of fierce nomadic warriors. DinAlt must learn their ways in order to defeat them. This volume also includes "The Mothballed Spaceship", a short story featuring dinAlt and other Pyrrans not included in the original volume.

Smith This was Harry Harrison's first novel and I can remember reading it in high school, when it originally appeared in ASTOUNDING (which is also why it's rather short for a novel). It was popular enough to engender a couple of sequels, though most fans probably identify Harry first with the "Stainless Steel Rat" series. It's interesting, by the way, to read a science fiction novel written fifty years ago (and a bit appalling to realize that's how long it's been). For one thing, it always surprises me that virtually no SF author of that time predicted computers or any other form of digital electronics, and their idea of miniaturization was laughable by today's standards. The starship pilots do the math for plotting a hyperspace jump in their heads, assisted by a calculator. (Writing a decade earlier, Heinlein's pilots used slide rules.) You would expect folks like that to be experienced predictors, but it almost never happened.Jason dinAlt is a professional gambler with a knack for winning far more often than he loses -- with the assistance of an undependable psi talent. He takes on a commission from a representative of the planet Pyrrus to build a very large take into a huge sum at the casino on another world, which he duly accomplishes. Pyrrus, he's told is the deadliest world ever to be colonized by humans and the money is crucial to its survival. Jason has basically run out of challenges in his life and after hearing this description, he decides to go and take a look for himself. And Pyrrus certainly lives up to its reputation: Every living thing there, from the microorganisms and the grass on up, seems intent on killing the colonists. And if the fauna and flora don't do you in, the tectonics and the climate will. Jason has to go through extensive survival schooling with the local five-year-olds before he can even go outdoors. And even those kids are armed and deadly. (Another comment: The super-sidearms they all carry -- or wear, actually -- apparently fire cartridges. Since everyone must get off perhaps a hundred shots per day, they must be reloading all the time. Why didn't the author give them some sort of energy-beam weapon? Today, of course, it would be long-charge lasers.) This extremely hostile environment also means everyone is fixated on survival, with no energy left over for creativity or any other ordinary human impulse, which doesn't do much for Jason's love lifeIn any case, that's just the set-up. There's a mystery about Pyrrus that carries the plot, and which Jason sets out to investigate. The planet, which survives economically by mining and exporting radioactive ores, and which has been settled for three centuries, still has only a single modest settlement, plus a few outlying mining camps. Not only is the city's population not expanding, it's actually contracting; the Pyrrans are slowly losing their battle with the planet. Moreover, the struggle seems to be centered on the only large settlement, and has been ever since the first colonists' arrival. There are even communities of "grubbers," who trade food to the city for hardware, who actually have reached a harmonious balance with the native life-forms. So what's going on here? I won't give away the maguffin, which was original for it's time, except to note that Jason's psychic abilities will prove useful. Younger readers, whose knowledge of science fiction is mostly 21st-century, really ought to go back and discover some of the Golden Age authors, of whom Harry Harrison is one of the most entertaining.

Nathalie Du Pasquier started drawing as soon as she met her husband George Sowden in 1979 in Milan. She was introduced to the world of design and shortly after, in 1981, became a founding member of the iconic postmodern design movement Memphis. From 1981 to 1987 she didn't stop drawing. Every day she would draw a whole new modern world, from very small items like jewelry to entire cities. This world only existed in her head but would eventually be developed into real pieces for the Memphis exhibitions.   This unique book is the first and definitive compilation of all the unpublished drawings from those years, which had been sitting in the drawers of Nathalie's studio for over 30 years. Organized by the smallest objects to the biggest and divided into chapters, each with a text by Nathalie, it has been carefully edited and designed by Apartamento magazine's co-founder Omar Sosa together with Nathalie Du Pasquier.   Don’t Take These Drawings Seriously is an excellent reference for future generations and a welcome document of an important period in modern design.

I was amazed at the parallels between the Han lifestyle and our own growing dependence on the internet for our commerce and entertainment. Knowing that the story was written in 1919 makes the predictions even more startling. The idea of "gangs" supplanting family life in America is also strangely prophetic. As to the story itself, what a fantastic tale of American ingenuity overcoming incredible odds! The triumph of the forest-dwelling Americans over the slovenly, city-dwelling Han is at once an inspiration and a cautionary tale. I'd say this seminal "Buck Rogers" tale is far superior to the pulp science fiction which followed in its footsteps. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in early 20th Century sci-fi, or anyone who just likes a good yarn.

Thrown forward into an Earth of the distant future ruled by the evil Han empire, Rogers enlists with a group of American guerrillas to overthrow the oppressors. It features great early s-f devices--airships, anti-grav belts, and the like. Very reminiscent of ER Burroughs' "Barsoom" novels. Great fun, a great read.

(I guess it won't be available there much longer.) I love all of Murray Leinster's stories - they typify all that constitutes Classic Science Fiction: Frustration with Human Frailty & Limitations, Cynicism juxtaposed with Idealistic Ethics, Simplistic Romantic Love, an Individualistic Inventor/Hero who wins the girl by foiling the plot and rescuing her - this one's got it all.Murray Leinster wrote his first stories in 1919! See The Runaway Skyscraper (Argosy Magazine, 1919). He paved the way for many other writers. His Med Ship Series laid the foundations for James White's Sector General Series. (See my List: Medical Science Fiction.) This story could have been a prequel to THE TRIGGER by Arthur C. Clarke - the "invention that saves the world" is exactly the same.A great & fast read! For more Inventor/Heros see my list: The Scientist/Engineer/Inventor Hero in Science Fiction.
