Cambiemos de pensamiento, aunque es posible que la mayoría de nosotros no nos paremos a pensar en ello, si existen grandes científicos, buenos médicos, universidades para formar a las personas en estas y otras muchas profesiones, es porque lo hacemos posible nosotros con nuestros impuestos, somos lo mas preciado e importante que tiene el mundo, nos necesita para que siga funcionando y le necesitamos para seguir haciéndole funcionar, siendo conscientes de esto, no pensemos que nos lo tienen que dar todo hecho, hagamoslo nosotros, solo nosotros podemos cambiar o hacer que la vida que vivimos sea mejor. By Juan Lugo Fitness This was a really well written book with wonderful insights. I've read many marketing books but few or close to none talk about "service design". Service design is about using empathy, delivering meaningful experiences and about asking the right questions. It made me rethink about the on boarding process with my clients. Questions like these come to mind: How can I simplify it for them? What is important and what is clutter? How can I make their lives easier with my services? We know that through a positive customer experience we are more likely to be talked about and to be referred.One particular part of the book that I really like is when the author mentions, "The HOW is the value it delivers to the customer, because the WHAT has become a hygiene factor."On a side-note: I also enjoyed the branding through out the book. The colors of the designs and pages are fun to look at. And it doesn't obscure the information either.

I like the principal and have done several transactions in the past like this but it was always with different individuals and deals I found on my own. The title looks like a non-sense word, but in actuallity it is a good example of one of the methods that new words are coigned and enter a language. The story also examines some of the basic theories of lingustics and semantics which have been developing for the past century in the context of a meeting between humans and another race of beings who hear and speak in so different a manner as to appear incomprehensible.The theme of communication with others through cultural, verbal, or temporal barriers is a thread that runs though a good number of Mr. Piper's stories as examples: his "Fuzzy" series, "Omnilingual" and "Murder in the Gun Room"--Wherein the main character, Colonel Rand, purposely manipulates others through his use of semantics; and quite effectively at that.We could all take the lesson from Mr. Piper's works that what we see and hear is subject to our own preconceptions and that we often confuse "truths" with "facts."

Taking a known biological process in our world, he morphs it into something else in another world. Unwinding the science, he takes us through not only human emotions but alien ones as well. I love this kind of sci-fi.

By Marjorie Perloff This book is a goldmine for anyone interested in the man who is surely one of the greatest artists of the 20th C. The autobiographical writingsare very revealing as are the letters and documents by others. Malevich came from very humble beginnings and the story of how heso much as learned what painting was is enthralling. And how long it took him to move from figurative work--the painting of sunsets and moonrises--to his Suprematism is fascinating. The volumes are beautifully edited and translated--a labor of love. They are well worth the price: my only complaint is that they are so heavy I can barely lift them. In any case, this is a thrilling read.

OK, but doesn't stand well alone By wiredweird "Police operation" comes from Piper's Paratime series (not that they're especialy serial) - a prototypical "alternate worlds" story, note the "worlds" plural. Some verion of humanity in some time-stream has discovered how to move between possible alternatives to their world and, just as importantly, back again. And, when anyone can, lots do, and that includes the bad guys. Where there are bad guys there are cops, and that's where the Paratinme Police come in.By itself, it amuses adequately. The reader catches on to the basics quickly, but without lecturing. Conspiracy theorists (and debunkers, I'm sure) will appreciate the cleanup tactics used to cover up the occasional breach, when advanced technology show up on worlds not nearly ready.But, in itself, I couldn't find it wholly satisfying - lots of mechanism for modest (if somewhat enjoyable) plot. In sure that, as part of a collection, this and other writings would bolster each other. United, the stories would stand well together. Divided from the others, this seems to fall.-- wiredweird

Good short story, part of the Paratime Series By Fantasyman This is a fairly brief short story, concerning a Paratime Police operation to eliminate a nasty pest that has been brought through Paratime into another timeline, one where interplanetary travel doesn't exist. The story concerns the actions routinely taken by the Paratime Police to keep the secret of Paritime safe, and provides a brief glimpse into the world of Paratime.H. Beam Piper was a talented writer, his science fiction and time travel stories not only contain some interesting aspects of science, but also; religion, psychology, politics, as well as social mores of the day. In a way I view them as time capsules of life in the late'40s and early '50s, where the struggle between communism and capitalism, democracy and tyranny, politics and religion, unfolds as a free-for-all overshadowed by the pervasive, looming threat of nuclear annihilation. Mean while, everyone is chain smoking and having a cocktail.For free on Kindle.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Patrolling Paratime By Karl Janssen Police Operation was originally published in the July 1948 issue of Astounding Science Fiction. The story opens on a farm somewhere in America. A farmer, a state trooper, and a game warden examine the mutilated carcasses of a cow and a dog, debating the question of what or who is killing livestock in the region. Could it be a bobcat, a lynx, or a psycho with a machete? Given that this novella was written by sci-fi visionary H. Beam Piper, you can bet that the real answer is going to be a lot weirder than all of the above.H. G. Wells may have invented time traveler fiction, but Piper built his whole career around it, perfected the subgenre, and made it his own. Police Operation is the foundational installment in a sequence of stories Piper wrote through the mid-'60s known as the Paratime series. There's actually an earlier story, He Walked Around the Horses, that touches on the Paratime universe, but the connection is tangential at best, and its here in Police Operation that Piper really lays the groundwork for the Paratime concept. As one would expect from Piper, this ain't your typical time travel. Rather than going back to the past or forward to the future, paratime travelers explore the multiple alternate timelines that form from myriad deviations in historical events. The timeline in which we live, presumably the same as the story's opening scene, is only one of a possibly infinite variety of timelines that simultaneously exist in parallel universes.The rather mundane title of the story is actually quite fitting in an ironic way. The police in question are the Paratime Police, an organization that patrols the various timelines, keeping the temporal peace, if you will. One of the fun things about the story is that Piper has written it much in the style and tone of a traditional cop story. The Paratime Police practice their profession and talk shop just like normal cops, except their daily work involves the intricate complexities of theoretical physics and a lot of futuristic gadgets. When the timecops are sitting around the station jawing with one another, it could be an episode of Dragnet or Barney Miller, but for the references to "mavrads" and "hypno-mech indoctrination."Like any good cop story, this is more than just a police procedural; it's an action-adventure story as well. As if the fascinating universe Piper has created isn't enough, there's also more than enough suspense to keep you interested. For today's readers, Police Operation offers plenty of pulp fiction nostalgia, yet it's still remarkably fresh and thought-provoking as if it could have been written just yesterday. If you've never read Piper before, this would be a good place to start. I for one am hooked, and look forward to further adventures in the Paratime series.

Burroughs' Best Martian Tale By George R Dekle Conventional wisdom has it that the first three books of Burroughs' Martian series, "A Princess of Mars," "The Gods of Mars," and "The Warlord of Mars" form an excellent trilogy and all the rest of the Martian tales are quite poorly done in comparison. I disagree.I will cite two examples as to why "Chessmen" is Burroughs' best work in this series.[1] You can hardly conceive of a more ghastly creature than a spider-being who lives as a parasite on headless human bodies, but that is a perfect description of Ghek the Kaldane, one of the central figures of the book. Burroughs takes this repulsive monstrosity and makes him such a loveable character that you cannot help but like him.[2] Burroughs not only wrote a good yarn, he wrapped his tale around a striking boardgame that he had invented--jetan, or Martian chess.It's no real trick to invent a chess variant. There are thousands of them, and most of them are rubbish. What is so singular about jetan is that it is a good chess variant. I read "Chessmen" as a child, and after reading it, the first thing I had to do was make a jetan set and play the game. I whiled away several enjoyable hours with the game. John Gollon, a noted authority on chess variants, had a similar experience when he was writing "Chess Variations." He thought he'd include a chapter on jetan for some comic relief, so he made a jetan set and played a few games. He found jetan "quite good--very playable and interesting." He then pronounced jetan "not a mere novelty, but ... a respectable game."These two singular achievments (Ghek & jetan) are not the only details that make "Chessmen" so enjoyable. Gahan of Gathol (aka Turan the Panthan) makes for a satisfying hero, and Tara of Helium fills the bill quite nicely for a damsel in distress.The heros are noble, the villians are wicked, the cause is just, and the action is nonstop. Great escapist reading.

The Original and Authentic Magical Adventure By William Barton The Chessmen of Mars is, I think, the pinnacle of Burroughs career, and certainly the best of the Barsoom series. It's also one of the great science fiction romances of the Twentieth Century. As a boy, reading the typical John Campbell-influenced SF of the 1950s, nothing prepared me for finding this book (and about 30 other moldy Burroughs hardcovers) in my grandmother's attic. There's not an alienated child in the world who could read this book and not be struck deeply by the pathos and courage of Ghek the Kaldane, whose the real hero of the tale, rather than Gahan of Gathol, the golden boy who gets the girl.

10 of 10 people found the following review helpful. WORTH NOT FORGETTING By D. Blankenship Burroughs' Martian Series is worth remembering and rereading from time to time. I first read these books well over 50 years ago and they, and this book, have lost none of their charm. For the student of SiFi and S&S, these are a must read. Granted, the style is certainly different than todays books, but this is a plus. We need to read and remember it. That being said, these books are just simply fun to read. Recommend them highly.

Grant This book is a fascinating recounting of the role of about ten naturalists who were on voyages to the far reaches of the earth from that by William Dampier in 1679 to Charles Darwin 1836. Naturalists often accompanied voyages of exploration. In the early voyages, they had minimal space for their collections, and they were lucky if their collections made it to Europe. Often they had associates who would make drawings of the flora or fauna they found. Many times the expeditions met with the indigenous inhabitants, sometimes with positive outcomes, sometimes not. The naturalists were lucky if they could publish reports of their findings before they died. In several cases, the plates of their drawings were only published in the past two decades. By the time Darwin accompanied the Beagle, the value of naturalists was generally recognized, and Darwin had the full support of Captain Robert FitzRoy.My interest in the book was heightened since I was a NASA atmospheric scientist who went on many airborne field missions to the ends of the earth from 1990 to 2002, visiting many of the Pacific islands visited by the early naturalists. The scientists were in charge of the missions, and the natives were friendly. Our scientific findings were published within two years of our missions. Times have changed.

Some folks have called it bland and predictable but for me it was a nicely paced and thoroughly enjoyable read. Some of the scene setting gave me the sense of actually being there. By Paul Camp Oh, the Dean Machine, the Dean Machine,You put it right in a submarineAnd it flies so high that it can't be seen--The wonderful, wonderful Dean machine!-- Damon KnightIn the late 1950s and early 1960s, John W. Campbell, Jr. wrote a series of editorials in _Astounding/Analog_ lambasting the U.S. Air Force for the wretched performance in the space race against the Russians. Campbell's solution was to put our money and energy into researching reactionless space drives. He was convinced that an invention by Norman L. Dean that seemed to bypass Newton's third law of motion could lead to a space ship that would put the stars in the hands of America.Articles in _Analog_ reflected Campbell's latest enthusiasm. There was Campbell's own "The Space-Drive Problem" (June, 1960), with John Schoenherr's cover of a submarine orbiting Mars. G. Harry Stine's "Time for Tom Swift" (Jan., 1961) expressed the belief that a scientific genius (a Tom Swift) was out there somewhere who would show us how to make spaceships with reactionless drives. The culmination was a heavily mathematical article by William O. Davis called "The Fourth Law of Motion" (May, 1962) which argued that we could bend (though not quite break) Newton's third law of motion. To some readers of _Analog_, it must have seemed as if they were living in a real life edisonade. Any day now, an inventor hero was going to lead us to the stars. Any day now.I don't know how much Murray Leinster's edisonade _The Wailing Asteroid_ (1960) was directly influenced by the goings-on in the pages of _Analog_. But it certainly seems to be a reflection of the times. There are satellites, missles, the DEW line, bomb shelters, the Cold War, and military bureaucrats. But American individualism wins out in the end.Oh, yes. The story. Well, it seems that radio telscope stations around the world begin to pick up a regular musical code every seventy-nine minutes. It is coming from M-387, an obscure asteroid. But our hero , an engineer named Joe Burke, has heard the signals in his head from time to time since he was eleven years old.Burke believes that the code is a set of instructions for building a super spaceship. But there is a catch. Building spacecraft is strictly illegal. How to get away with a project this big? Burke's plan is to build a ship that looks like a jumbo-sized plastic bomb shelter. Leinster (who was an inventor himself) has great fun showing how this is done. I know of no other novel in all of science fiction that boasts of such a spacecraft. Nor do I know of a scene exactly like the one in which a bomb shelter is fleeing from a group of nuclear missles.Now, edisonades do not come from a literary tradition of deep philosophy, elegant poetry, or classical novels. They come from a tradition of dime novels, penny dreadfuls, pulp thrillers, and Edward Stratemeyer syndicated series. Their appeal is not so much literary as it is the living of a power fantasy. Wouldn't it be fun to whip together a wonderful spaceship? Wouldn't it be fun to whiz off to M-387? And _then_...But alas for romance. The _Analog_ space-drive articles petered out after the middle of 1962. The Dean drive came to naught. We never did discover a Tom Swift or a Dick Seaton. America won the space race, but it did so with conventional liquid fuel rockets rather than an FTL drive or repelatron fields. Still, Leinster's novel maintains a certain charm and quirkiness. It is one of his most entertaining and original works._Addendum_: _The Wailing Asteroid_ was made into a British movie called _The Terrornauts_ (1967). I have not seen it, but all reviews that I have read indicate that the film was rather dreadful. Stick to the original book.

Gallagher One would think that a "dated" sci-fi book like this wouldn't hold much depth or would withstand the test of time, but this one is awesome. I'd say, "They should make a movie out of this!" but 'they' would, of course, ruin it.From the beginning pages, you'll say to yourself, "I get this.. I get the plot, I get the characters, I like where this is going!" and you'll feel like the 50s will put the "cool" back into sci-fi the same way the Forbidden Planet did, or This Island Earth.The characters are likable, the plot is logical and has no holes, and it is just an enjoyable book. In fact, this is one of the first sci-fi books my father "made" me read when I was a kid, and this is the one which absolutely hooked me. A total classic!

By Athena Garcia I was once had this problem on socializing people and after reading this book it reminds me back when I was too shy or too reserved for others to have conversation. I am glad that I finally manage to remove that thoughts from myself. If only I have read this book when I was in high-school I could have used the techniques and be more socialized with others. What a great book to read.
