By Marjorie Perloff This book is a goldmine for anyone interested in the man who is surely one of the greatest artists of the 20th C. The autobiographical writingsare very revealing as are the letters and documents by others. Malevich came from very humble beginnings and the story of how heso much as learned what painting was is enthralling. And how long it took him to move from figurative work--the painting of sunsets and moonrises--to his Suprematism is fascinating. The volumes are beautifully edited and translated--a labor of love. They are well worth the price: my only complaint is that they are so heavy I can barely lift them. In any case, this is a thrilling read.
