Star-begotten, by H. G. Wells

Review “Mr. Wells is the most persuasive of living writers… He knows that we sigh for a sane world of unlimited possibilities. He catches us on the full wave of our wish… Star Begotten is the most mature of his fantasies.” —V.S. Pritchett, The New Statesman and Nation

Review “A definitive scholarly edition of this notable novel. Huntington eloquently and subtly demonstrates its complexity and ambiguity. Star Begotten should receive a warm welcome.” (Patrick Parrinder, professor of English at University of Reading)

About the Author H.G. WELLS (1866–1946) pioneered the “scientific romance” in such novels as The War of the Worlds, The Time Machine, and The Invisible Man. JOHN HUNTINGTON is professor of English at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and the author of books including The Logic of Fantasy: H.G. Wells and Science Fiction.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Why isn't this a cult classic? By Nash Android This short novel was first published in 1937, and seventy-five years later, I finally got around to reading it. It took me a while because I had to wait around for things like my parents to reach puberty, me being born, learning to read, and then realizing this book existed. I find this last thing surprising because, after reading it, I am amazed it does not have a cult following. There should be T-shirts and buttons for people who wish to identify themselves as Star-Begotten or Star-Born. Once you read it, you'll know what I mean. The story centers on Joseph Davis, a popular writer of romanticized histories, who comes to believe that some people differ fundamentally from most of us. They are more rational, possibly more talented and intelligent. Who are these people? Why are they different? After what amount to BS sessions with his friends and associates, Davis entertains the hypothesis that genetic mutations caused by cosmic rays are responsible for this new step in human evolution. One of his compatriots suggests that since the mutations appear neither random nor harmful, they must be intentional. Martians (as a euphemism for aliens) are tagged as likely agents. There is an interesting contrast presented here in which people of today (well, people of 75 years ago) jump to unscientific, irrational speculation to explain how people are becoming more rational. Wells is indulging in a bit of dry, tongue-in-cheek humor with this, I suspect. But the cause of the mutations is not the central point, it's simply a dryly humorous plot device. The thought provoking question behind it is, `Is humanity really becoming more intelligent and more rational?' And the other question is, `Should it?'This is not your average kind of novel. In some ways, it's a philosophical treatise on politics and humanity like Plato's Republic or Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged, except, unlike the latter, Star Begotten is enjoyable, optimistic, and well-written. It's one of those books that can make you think, if you let it. It can give you ideas. And this may be why it never rose to cult classic status. Ideas can be uncomfortable things. This is what Wells himself says about them:`A notion is something you can handle. But an idea, a general idea, has a way of getting all over you and subjugating you, and no free spirit submits to that. Confronted with an idea the American says: 'Oh, yeah!' or 'Sez you,' and the Englishman says: 'I don't fink,' or at a higher social level: 'Piffle--piffle before the wind.' These simple expressions are as good against ideas as the sign of the cross used to be against the medieval devil. The pressure is at once relieved.' (Another case of Wells' dry humor.)There are about ten other sections, mostly assessments about the current state of mankind, that I marked because I thought they deserved to be shared. But this would make for a very long book review, or whatever this is, so I'll refrain from doing that. I will, however, share this summation of how Wells says you can recognize these star-begotten people:`one characteristic of this new type of mind is its resistance to crowd suggestions, crowd loyalties, instinctive mass prejudices, and mere phrases, ... these strongminded individualists ... doing sensible things and refusing to do cruel, monstrous, and foolish things...'Is humanity progressing? Is it overcoming its infancy? Is it becoming rational? I don't know but I would like to believe so. I've met sane, intelligent people and I suspect there are a lot of them. If you think you may be one, Wells provides this cautionary statement in the voice of one of the book's more cynical characters:`There are bad times ahead for uncompliant sane men. They will be hated by the right and by the left with an equal intensity.'I found this short novel refreshingly different from popular contemporary `action-packed' and largely idea-barren novels. It is a thought provoking social commentary about ideas, the evolution of ideas, and human potential. The charming characters, bits of dry humor, and the hopeful, optimistic outlook also appealed to me. I highly recommend it for those seeking something other than mindless entertainment.

A key pick for any Wells fan By Midwest Book Review STAR BEGOTTEN was first published in 1937 and is a short novel - second of a series by Wells - which covers discoveries in genetic mutations. A simple event turns into a hysterical social reaction in this story of the possible return of Martians from War of the Worlds, and their impact on the nature of humanity itself. A key pick for any Wells fan.Diane C. DonovanCalifornia Bookwatch

An Irate And Despairing Wells Comes Up With A Plea For Sanity By s.ferber Released 39 years after his seminal sci-fi novel "The War of the Worlds" was published in 1898, and just two years before Orson Welles scared the bejeebers out of U.S. listeners with his radio play of that same novel, 1937's "Star-Begotten" finds its author, H.G. Wells, returning to the Red Planet to tell us more about those mysterious and pesky Martians. Written when Wells was 71, this latter work--rather than being a tale of action and mayhem and a truly groundbreaking instance of the then-still-new science fiction (or, to use the term that Wells preferred, "scientific romances")--is more a novel of ideas and speculation, of satire and bitter condemnation, and, I have a feeling, is a largely unknown work today. And that is a shame, as it is obviously a deeply felt work; an appeal to reason in a world slipping inexorably toward another world war. In this short novel (it is roughly the same length as such early Wells classics as "The Time Machine," "The Island of Dr. Moreau" and "The Invisible Man"), we meet a youngish author named Joseph Davis. A writer of popular histories that uphold the glory and promise of humankind, and a man who has long since swept his own religious doubts under the mental rug, Davis, when we first encounter him, is a troubled soul. His wife has increasingly become a stranger, the imminent birth of his first child has left him in a panicked state, and his rosy-tinted histories have lately begun to strike him as so much bosh. And then he overhears a conversation at his Planetarium Club, in which several of the learned members discuss the possibility of mankind's increasing intelligence being the result of the cosmic rays that are constantly bombarding us. Could this be deliberate? Could, say, those Martians be firing rays at us to change mankind, to make us better and brighter, to possibly...Martianize us?!?! That is what Davis and two of his cronies, obstetrician Holdman Stedding and philosophy professor Ernest Keppel, endeavor to riddle out, in this thoroughly engaging and passionate piece of work. This is a book in which Wells, a former Socialist and member of the Fabian Society, as well as the creator of any number of utopian scenarios himself (in novels such as "In the Days of the Comet," "Men Like Gods" and "The Shape of Things to Come"), subjects to scalding satire the Socialists and the creators of utopian literature, as well as the British government, the average intelligence of the common people, journalists, world dictators, modern religion and society in general. Though written 75 years ago, the critiques in the book are as relevant today, sadly enough, as ever. Take this passage, for example, as our three lead characters sit and discuss the situation. Says Keppel: "Our social order is bankrupt. It is not delivering the goods. It is defaulting and breaking up. War, pervading and increasing brutality, lack of any real liberty, economic mismanagement, frightful insufficiency in the midst of possible super-abundance--am I overstating the indictment?" This could almost have been written today, right? Though there is little to no action in "Star-Begotten" per se, the entire novel is filled with wonderfully well-written passages such as this one; you'll feel like using a highlighter to underscore many of the choicer comments, as mankind's lot is appraised and discussed by these three astute gentlemen. And as befits its satiric side, the novel also contains some one-liners guaranteed to make the reader chuckle, such as when Wells describes the music of 1937 as "raucous bang, bang, bump stuff" (which leads one to wonder how he'd feel about the heavy metal and hip-hop music of today!). Undoubtedly, though, the book's most amusing moment comes when one of the Planetarium Club members declares, "Some of you may have read a book called 'The War of the Worlds'--I forget who wrote it--Jules Verne, Conan Doyle, one of those fellows." A rare instance of genuine humor in an otherwise quite serious novel; a novel in which the author, aghast at the state of a world teetering on the brink, tries to paint a picture of what COULD be, if only Man cared a little less for material gain. Of course, it was a lesson that was largely unavailing, so much so that in his introduction to the 1941 edition of his 1908 classic "The War in the Air," Wells famously wrote "I told you so. You damn fools." Fortunately, however, it's never too late to learn, and that is why "Star-Begotten" should be placed on the "must read" list of all thinking adults. It is an intelligent book that uses a sci-fi backdrop as a means of making dozens upon dozens of vitally important points. It may not feature the zap guns of the 1898 novel, but surely does strike home nevertheless! Concluding with a surprise ending of sorts and a note of tentative optimism, it is a Wells novel that is surely ripe for modern-day reappraisal.

Why are you really here? Is this the life you were put here to live? What could you do, if only you had the nerve, courage, resources? Purpose. We're all looking for it. But it often seems that finding one can be daunting, puzzling, even overwhelming. In this short book, Umair explains, through the story of a little lamp who can't seem to glow, what a purpose truly is, where it comes from--and where it can take you. If, that is, you're ready to find yours. Struggle by struggle, the little lamp seeks the light inside himself--and begins to find it where, and how, he least expected. And though they often seem difficult, if not downright impossible to find, the truth is that your life's purpose, like the little lamp's, is probably hidden in plain sight. Irreverent and instructive, The Lamp and the Light is a short modern day fable that helps readers tackle the often frustrating, sometimes heart-wrenching, yet necessary and profound questions of purpose--instead of having to suffer nail-biting panic attacks over them. A quick, and easy to read parable, The Lamp and the Light will entertain readers of all ages--and guide, challenge, and inspire them to live fully.

Can be read in just a few hours but packs a huge punch. Many of us sense that something is deeply amiss in our culture. We have a yearning to thrive that seems just out of the reach of most of us whether that is materially or spiritually. What to do about it, at the level of the individual? This seems like a good start.

The future of corporate computing is the rapid transformation from in-house computing to cloud computing. That future includes a direct and interactive dialogue between the ultimate user and the computer—and without programming as we know it today. In The Future of Corporate Computing, Paul Houston Harkins, a fifty-five-year veteran of the corporate IT industry, offers his expert opinion to business executives seeking to understand and manage corporate computing and the impact of this revolution in information management systems on their bottom lines. Whereas executive managers working with the current IT environment put their precious information in the hands of their IT teams, emerging technology integrates corporate computing in a very immediate way. Changes in corporate computing will bring almost total transparency, instant auditability, and universal understanding of all computing processes. Top managers, Harkins argues, must focus on utilizing corporate computing as a major business tool and asset for accomplishing their organizational objectives. The Future of Corporate Computing pushes hard against self-serving and costly inertia, providing corporate executives with the information and insights to encourage them to make the leap into the new era.

Harkins Full disclosure, I am the author of "The Future of Corporate Computing" and the new web site www.futureofcorporatecomputing.comMy previous book "How to Become a Highly Paid Corporate Programmer" has been proven to be accurate and is still very useful to programmers today, in spite of some negative reviews by the techies who have now largely dispppeared as predicted in that book. The Future of Corporate Computing book details exactly the revolutionary changes of what is already happening in corporate computing and vividly illustrates how the corporate programmer can migrate to success along with the corporate migration to cloud computing, and the . continuing decline of IBM and the refusal of IBM to do the obvious to make its customers tremendously more productive. The answer for those who will succeed and florish now and in the future is tremendously increased productivity and tremendously increased capability accomplished by true actual innovation, not unending and unfullfilled promises and stagnation.Read the book, innovate and succeed.Keep doing what you are doing and fail..

East of the high Sierras of California lies an arid land of hardy but remarkable flora and fauna—and equally remarkable people. Mary Austin has captured and wonderfully described this place and its living things in this classic volume. A prolific writer, friend of H.G. Wells, Jack London, and other notables, Mary Austin was well acquainted with the flowers, the valleys and hills, the still-hopeful prospectors, the indigenous peoples keeping touch as best they could with an ancient way of life. This is her tribute to that special land and its inhabitants in the waning years of the nineteenth century. EXCERPTS (G)reat flocks pour down the trails with that peculiar melting motion of moving quail, twittering, shoving, and shouldering. They splatter into the shallows, drink daintily, shake out small showers over their perfect coats, and melt away again into the scrub, preening and pranking, with soft contented noises. —WATER TRAILS OF THE CERISO He was a perfect gossip of the woods, this Pocket Hunter, and when I could get him away from "leads" and "strikes" and "contacts," full of fascinating small talk about the ebb and flood of creeks, the piñon crop on Black Mountain, and the wolves of Mesquite Valley. I suppose he never knew how much he depended for the necessary sense of home and companionship on the beasts and trees, meeting and finding them in their wonted places,—the bear that used to come down Pine Creek in the spring, pawing out trout from the shelters of sod banks, the juniper at Lone Tree Spring, and the quail at Paddy Jack's. —THE POCKET HUNTER Seyavi made baskets for love and sold them for money, in a generation that preferred iron pots for utility. Every Indian woman is an artist,—sees, feels, creates, but does not philosophize about her processes. —THE BASKET MAKER

The Land of Little Rain (American Frontier Series), by Mary Austin

Review ""The Land of Little Rain "was a book well worth awaiting. . . . a collection of essays about the Southwest, beautifully written."

From the Inside Flap "Between the high Sierras south from Yosemite--east and south over a very great assemblage of broken ranges beyond Death Valley, and on illimitably into the Mojave Desert" is the territory that Mary Austin calls the Land of Little Rain. In this classic collection of meditations on the wonders of this region, Austin generously shares "such news of the land, of its trails and what is astir in them, as one lover of it can give to another." Her vivid writings capture the landscape--from burnt hills to sun-baked mesas--as well as the rich variety of plant and animal life, and the few human beings who inhabit the land, including cattlemen, miners, and Paiute Indians. This Modern Library Paperback Classic is set from the original 1903 edition.

About the Author Novelist and essayist who wrote about Native American culture and their social problems. Mary Austin is the author of nearly thirty books and hundreds of short works that drew from her impressions of the indigenous people.

Interesting Read By Mumbo I chose this book as it describes Death Valley and surrounds in the US and as I had been there thought it might provide a little more in depth information about the area. She writes delightfully about flora, fauna and nature's way, however, I got a little bogged down two thirds of the way in with almost unlimited descriptions of flora - perhaps someone with this background would find it fascinating - anyhow I soldiered on and found the remainder of the book very good, particularly the native indian tribe's customs and ways. Best natural history writing By A Customer Austin lived in the Owens Valley during a turbulent period at the turn of the century, and she observes the people and wild things dwelling there with a novelist's eye. But what sets this gem above all the rest is simply her writing, the plain beauty of her voice and phrasing. She achieves a tone that is somehow at once wistful and tinged with levity, very gently ironic yet always loving. Her words caress their subjects like -- well, like the pen and ink drawings that graced the original publication in 19-ought-whatever. They evoke all the richness of the place, its austerity, its pathos, its beauty, with a gentle affection that is sweet but never cloying, sometimes sad but never downcast. It has a kind of Zen translucency, filtered through the gently humorous, sensitive lens of a literary genius.

Intimate & Beautiful Appraisal of Life In a Harsh Land By Bugs The famous American-West landscape photographer, Ansel Adams and friend of M.H.A., said of The Land of Little Rain: "The sharp beauty of The Land of Little Rain is finely etched in the distinguished prose of Mary Austin. Many books and articles have probed the factual aspects of this amazing land, but no writing to my knowledge conveys so much of the spirit of earth and sky, of plants and people, of storm and the desolation of majestic wastes, of tender, intimate beauty, as does The Land of Little Rain." (Re: "A Note on the Land and on the Photographs", from "The Land of Little Rain"- Houghton-Mifflin Co. 1950).Indeed, M.H.A. displayed an uncanny sensitivity and understanding of the desert lands in the Owens Valley, California. Death Valley is, indeed, harsh and unforgiving, but to the astute observer who has learned how to live within the limits of sparse resources, it is an unequaled Paradise. She writes so eloquently and poetically of how the desert people and flora/fauna survive. The interaction of desert botany, biology, hydrology, geography, meteorology, and ecology come across vividly and often humorously with such lines as: "Once at Red Rock, in a year of green pasture (a wet year), which is a bad time for the scavengers, we saw two buzzards, five ravens, and a coyote feeding on the same carrion, and only the coyote seemed ashamed of the company". (chapter 3- "The Scavengers")M.H.A. studied the land, the flora/fauna, the weather (her "2" basic desert seasons- summer and winter) and she learned from her neighbors the Shoshone and Paiute Indians (she preferred to call the American Indians "Amerinds") , the Mexicans, the white settlers, and many colorful desert loners such as the "Pocket Hunter" (for seeker of pockets of gold)- her name for an old prospector friend. She learned much wisdom and practical knowledge from her Indian friends like "The Basket Maker", Seyavi, whose life story is so eloquently told. The Indians shared with her their survival knowledge of how to find water from signs displayed by plants, how to read the activities of animals for food, how to "know" which plants are medicinal and/or edible and which plants to stay away from:"Live long enough with an Indian, and he or the wild things will show you a use for everything that grows in these borders". (Chapter- "Shoshone Land")This beautiful little book finishes with: "Come away, you who are obsessed with your own importance in the scheme of things, and have got nothing you did not sweat for, come away by the brown valleys and full-bosomed hills to the even-breathing days, to the kindliness, earthliness, ease of Pueblo de Las Uvas."According to Ansel Adam's notes, Las Uvas is Grape Canyon or Creek and is part of the Tejon area south of Bakersfield, Ca.After reading this fine book, one will come to understand why so many people have referred to M.H.A. as the "Henry David Thoreauof the American West". Thoreau is the author of the renown classic, "Walden".There are many different publications of The Land of Little Rain and many have variations from the original format, ie., different introductions, preface, illustrations, etc. The text is all that really matters, of course, but I have checked-out a few of the different copies from regional libraries so I could copy the intros by such notables as "Cactus Ed" (Edward Abbey- "The Monkey Wrench Gang", et al.). Abbey's Forward is in the 1988 Penguin Books edition. My copy is a reproduction of the original 1903 edition complete with line drawings by E. Boyd Smith who knew M.H.A. and the regions she wrote about.Ansel Adams teamed-up with Houghton-Mifflin Co. in 1950 to give tribute to this outstanding classic by publishing a version her book with 48 of his photos taken in the Owens Valley, California region where the book was written and M.H.A. lived for sometime. In describing the various areas and geographical locations in her book, M.H.A. cloaked many of the popular modern regional names with original Indian or old nicknames known only to a few to protect the privacy of those she wrote about. Adams and the editors used several resources to decipher the pseudonyms so he could match them to his photographs with the current regional names for accurate descriptions. They published an interesting glossary of all the names that could be deciphered in this 1950 edition.More information including photographs of M.H.A. and her life can be seen at the Owens Valley Historical Society website:[...]

The true story of how Radio City Music Hall, Art Deco masterpiece and one of New York City's iconic tourist attractions and cultural landmarks, was saved from demolition is told at last. Nearly forty years later, Rosemary Novellino-Mearns, Dance Captain of the legendary Radio City Music Hall Ballet Company during the 1970s, tells the amazing story of how she motivated a small group of dedicated colleagues, friends, media and political allies to join forces, challenge the Rockefeller establishment and, against all odds, save "the Showplace of the Nation."

It is a true story and I remember very well when it all happened. Not only does this book evoke everyone's own personal memories of Radio City Music Hall, it reveals for the very first time the actual behind-the-scenes story of Rosemary Novellino-Mearns, who led the valiant fight by the Showpeople's Committee To Save Radio City Music Hall from almost certain demolition in 1978. There were many roadblocks along the way, but ultimately, the Music Hall was declared first a New York City landmark, then a New York State Landmark and finally a National Landmark which guaranteed this iconic theatre's survival. This would not have happened without Rosemary's efforts. The book also includes some informative history of the Music Hall and its resident Ballet Company; descriptions of the Great Stage's unique effects; pictures of onstage performances and backstage activity; as well as a detailed listing of every motion picture and stage show that played in the theatre up until 1979, when the movie and stage show format ended; and of course, a history of the Rockettes. Today, Radio City Music Hall continues to present outstanding shows featuring the Rockettes and Guest Artists, and it is also the prime New York City venue for concerts and other events. Every theatre has an angel, but Rosemary Novellino-Mearns is Radio City Music Hall's Archangel!

London, a fascinating metropolis not just in terms of its history and landmark buildings, is also a city that grew out of villages. Its unique geography is expressed in a mosaic of districts, each with its own distinctive character and pedigree. London’s districts, with their patchwork layout of primarily Georgian and Victorian squares and terraces juxtaposed with modern buildings and estates, reflect changing ideals in architecture, urban design and planning as well as shifting values in real estate and the insatiable thirst of its consumers. London is thus both text and context: fossilized social history, layerings of economic, social, and architectural history conveyed in stock brick, stucco, Portland stone, glass and steel. Underpinning this urban landscape is an evolutionary resilience that has maintained the basic spatial framework of the metropolis and sustained its imitable character. The city’s institutional framework has been severely ruptured and reinvented time and time again after fires, bombs, floods or wholesale redevelopment. Political unrest and racial conflict have resulted in riots, while successive rounds of investment and disinvestment have replaced elements of the built environment many times over. This book offers an insightful perspective into the distinctiveness of London as expressed through its socially significant buildings and districts.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. wide-ranging, informative survey of the architecture of London's 27 districts By Henry Berry The organization is straightforward considering the medley and number of topics. Not denoted or implied in the title, the content treats 27 identifiable districts which are like a jigsaw puzzle or mosaic making up the city of London. The introduction titled “A City of Districts” covers the chronology of the establishment of these into their development and connection making up the city. Following this in 27 separate chapters, each district is dealt with individually according to location, characteristics, infrastructure and the relatively less-defined and variable attributes of types or class of residents and atmosphere. The 27 districts represent the extremes of British society—e. g., upper class and wealthy and at the other extreme, working class with a large percentage of ethnic residents—with the greater number somewhere in between. Some districts are known more for being financial or other business centers, their plethora of art galleries, their parks or other public works, and such.Knox’s book is not a book of sociology or urban studies however; and he focuses on the positive and interesting aspects of the districts to give them their recognizable and in some cases unique identities for this book. Knox is professor and former dean of the College of Architecture and Urban Studies at Virginia Tech and author of “Atlas of Cities” and other works of urban studies. As the book’s title does denote, architecture is the primary subject. For the most part, the social change interest is taken as a given and noted as reflected in the buildings, not inquired into or analyzed sociologically in any depth. The overt, pronounced, though not exclusive architectural content of the book is evidenced not only by the text, but also unmistakably by the plentiful visual matter—often a many as three high-quality color photographs on a page—of residences, public buildings, office buildings, smaller business establishments and shops, and parks too in each neighborhood. All of these are identified by name in the captions; and in keeping with the book’s purpose of highlighting the bases of each district’s distinctive identity, most of the photos have not only the captions but also lengthy annotations about the architectural structure as informative about the respective district. Maps with numbers locating the buildings in the annotated photos with an inset showing the location of the district in the city of London help the reader visualize the district’s in the city’s mosaic.Mainly despite the defining of London’s districts a survey of the city’s architecture and simple study of it, the book can serve estimably as a travel/visitor guidebook for one’s interested making use of it for this. It’s more informative and extensive than ordinary guidebooks regarding architectural sites of note.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Terrific compilation of photos! By A voracious reader I love London's architecture and this book truly does it justice. The very extensive selection of photos, the really interesting write-up and the inclusion of information about many neighborhoods makes this book a pleasure to peruse.

The Second City has launched the careers of celebrated comic performers such as Tina Fey and Stephen Colbert and produced award-winning content. But it's the actual improvisational process developed and honed over the years by The Second City that has become its legacy. Players master an ability to cocreate in ensembles using philosophies that celebrate a "yes, and" approach. They embrace authenticity and failure and espouse the idea of "following the follower", which allows any member of the team to assume a leadership role.

For more than two decades, The Second City has taken these same principles to thousands of corporate clients, showing leaders how to apply the tools of improv to common business challenges. Here, for the first time, Second City executives Kelly Leonard and Tom Yorton describe how you can use the same skills that thrill audiences around the world to improve your emotional intelligence, increase creativity, and learn to pivot out of tight and uncomfortable situations. In this engaging, often humorous, and highly practical audiobook, you will learn how to become a more compelling leader and a more collaborative follower by employing the seven elements of improv:

    • Yes, And, by which you give every idea a chance on which to be acted
    • Ensemble, reconciling the needs of individuals with those of the broader team
    • Cocreation, which highlights the importance of dialogue in creating new products, processes, and relationships
    • Authenticity, or being unafraid to speak truth to power, challenge convention, and break the rules
    • Failure, teaching us that not only is it okay to fail, but we should always include it as part of our process
    • Follow the Follower, which gives any member of the group the chance to assume a leadership role
    • Listening, in which you learn to stay in the moment and know the difference between listening to understand and listening merely to respond

The ideas are far more relevant than I would have ever imagined. The theme of this book is to use comedy improv training to help people become more creative, more innovative, more open to other ideas. In comedy improv, they call the practice of building up on another person's start the "Yes, And" approach. By using this approach "creative breakthroughs occur in environments where ideas are not just fully explored, but heightened and stretch two levels that might seem absurd at first."In our work life, when we work in groups, we try to be more willing to listen and to build up on the others ideas. At Second City, the performers did not become great by working as a soloist; instead, they did it by learning to work in groups. The authors call this habit, "The importance of the ensemble." Second city realized after a half of century of doing comedy, that "dialogues push stories further than monologues."One of the more interesting ideas in this book is the idea of "Follow the follower." What this means is that a group is free to allow any member to be the leader for a time that is when his or her expertise is particularly needed. There is one part of this book--right at the very end, that is worth the price of admission alone. It is a list of tips on how to communicate with people better. Here's a few:♠ Look people in the eye when you meet them.♠ Smile.♠ Don't check your text or email when someone else is talking. (Oh that one hits too close to home.)The authors include an appendix that are actually exercises based on the routines of Second City. There is also an extensive NOTES section. as well as an. index.√ All in all, YES, AND was a surprising book. The ideas suggested are unique and practical. I believe many of the suggestions are worth trying. Highly recommend.Note: Review copy courtesy of Edelweiss. I do not know the author of this book and no one asked me to write a positive review. Heck, they were too cheap to even give me any free Second City tickets.

Grating tone and not enough support for the material By Kennard Alton As others have commented the book has a very heavy self congratulatory tone. I made it about 70% of the way through the book before I'd had my fill and the "aren't we great" message continued throughout. Even when discussing the times Second City screwed up the author somehow made it sound that they were brilliant anyway. The book could have used a LOT more examples. Way too often it describes how some technique is really helpful applied to a business and then doesn't show us an instance of when and how it helped. There are some examples in the book, but maybe 20% of what you'd want in order to actually understand and be convinced by the material they present.

Smart Things from Funny People By Chip Hauss If you are laughing at the idea that the Second City folks could right a serious book about leadership then you REALLY need to read this book.I bought this book on a whim. I liked second city and the title grabbed me, because as a peacebuilder, I focus on both-and rather than either-or solutions, so Yes, And sort of struck a chord. What I realized as I read the book that improv and problem solving have a lot in common wherever they occur. Their tools resonate with what works for my colleagues on the ground--work in teams (whoops, I mean ensembles), listen well, build on and support what others are say, and most of all, yes-and the person you are working with. Always take what s/he is saying AND build on it. Expand the frame of the discussion. You'll probably get somewhere and have some fun getting there.I was reading the book and smiling when the CEO of the group I work for came in. Melanie and I are both Jewish and I was reading about Jewsical the Musical which got us laughing more than it did Second City audiences. Then, I explained why I was reading the book, and we both simultaneously decided that we should get the Second City folks to do a workshop at the Alliance for Peacebuilding's next annual conference so that our idiot savant improv artists could get some serious training (hopefully in some not so serious ways) in doing what they already do better. If only we could afford them.

To this day I miss him. This book was a great read, I read it in one night. It was written by David Evans, but with Peter Freestone's input. It was an emotional rollercoaster of comments and facts. I truly believe that "Phoebe" cared for Freddie, knew him well and would not write something untrue or tabloid-ish for the sake of writing a book like other's have. One can tell that there are hurt feelings and that he was still grieving at the time of the writing, but he was not malicious in expressing his feelings. He explains things about Freddie's relationship with Mary and Barbara in a way that confirmed what I always thought. A lot of people want to romanticize aspects of Freddie and his relationships, because it ties a pretty bow around everything. But someone with an open mind and a keen eye can see that everything was not the fairy tale that they want to believe. He also made a point about Freddie and love in general that made sense. And for those who criticize others for wanting to know all about Freddie's romantic life, I would remind you that Freddie himself talked about sex very frequently, often bragged about it, and used his extreme sex appeal to woo the audience. As I said, the book was an emotional rollercoaster for me, but Phoebe ended it on a positive note. I recommend the book and thank Phoebe and David Evans for writing it.

Since the title of the book is: "Freddie Mercury - What He Left Behind" I assumed the book would be more about Freddie and what he left behind rather than what happened to his friends. I do appreciate Peter Freestone sharing his life and all that he and the rest of Freddie's friends went through after Freddie died. Am sure it was a very tortuous time for all of them. My expectations were too high and thought the book would be more about what Freddie actually did leave behind, other than his music and his legacy. It was an okay read and glad I could read it on Kindle rather than purchasing the actual book.

I found it interesting to understand some of the things going on in the background at Garden Lodge at the time of the illness and death of Freddie Mercury, and to be more balanced than Jim Hutton's view. I came away notdisliking Mary Austin as much as I found I had, and felt much more empathy for her.

Very well written and full of inspirational thoughts and ideas for how each and everyone of us can get active in tackling youth unemployment. I have so far only read the first part and the chapter that is relevant for employers and this was excellent. I will now venture into the other chapters on entrepreneurship, public policy and the education system.
