This book “Pattern Theory” summarizes the work of an important contemporary thinker, the architect and systems theorist Christopher Alexander, an emeritus professor at the University of Berkeley, California. In 1979 one of his books, "A Pattern Language", an 1100-page-essay on architecture and human life, became a non-fiction best seller that attracted half a million readers and continues to inspire people from many disciplines. The still broader four-volume essay "The Nature of Order" was published 2002-2004 as magnum opus. The life work of Alexander is outstanding. He develops a general theory of living systems, a systems theory based on the concepts center, wholeness and transformation by using design patterns and pattern languages as parts of the method. There is a whole new cosmos of thinking with astonishing bandwidth: Alexander suggests a new scientific paradigm that stands in opposition to the traditional causal mechanistic paradigm of natural science – and he offers a new knowledge format as a way to enable people and support their participation in design processes. Alexander's theories have already proven useful in education, organizational development, permaculture, and in software the design patterns have even become mainstream. Many disciplines are about to follow in this development. Pattern theory allows us to change our thinking, to rethink our world and to move towards a fairer society. Salingaros This is an excellent and brief introduction to Patterns, and their applications to Architecture, Design, Software, and many other disciplines. The author comes from the software community, which has developed Pattern Theory much more than the architecture community, which is where Patterns originated. Leitner takes the Pattern design framework very seriously, and points out possible new applications that could organize scientific, social, and even religious thinking in a revolutionary manner. For readers who already know Christopher Alexander's book "A Pattern Language", I should explain that Leitner includes the later four-volume work "The Nature of Order" in what he labels "Pattern Theory". Thus, what we have here is an introduction to all of Alexander's work, and not just the original design patterns.I own the original German edition of this book "Mustertheorie", which I have never been able to read because I don't speak German. But that book is popular in the German-speaking world, both among the software and architecture communities. It is very good to have the english version now available as well. One improvement is that the English edition includes Leitner's diagrams of Alexander's "Fifteen Fundamental Properties", which were not present in the German edition. I used those diagrams, with Leitner's permission, in my own book "Algorithmic Sustainable Design". The properties codify universal attributes of coherent form, with applications to a multitude of structures, physical as well as abstract ones.The way we design things is evolving, yet in many applications, our society is stuck in a dead end. Recent human creations too often disconnect with nature, and depend upon a frightening waste of energy. New forces are pushing for a renewal of design education that brings in innovative material, and which makes possible true sustainability and resilience. We need a new set of authorities to provide those solutions, and Christopher Alexander is one of them. This book by Helmut Leitner is, in my opinion, on the list of essential readings for learning about the new direction in design thinking.

Executive summary of Alexander's ideas, impact and potential By Andrius Kulikauskas This Fall, I will be teaching a course on "Philosophy of Technology" in Vilnius, Lithuania, or rather, I will be recreating it as a workshop on "philosophy and technology". Christopher Alexander is the most important thinker I will consider. He's the Plato or Kant of our times. But it truly is a challenge to encompass, present and apply his ever thought-provoking ideas. I'm grateful and impressed that Helmut Leitner has taken up this challenge to distill a short, clear, readable book of findings from 4,000 pages of Alexander's emotionally intense investigations. I can only judge from Leitner's table of contents and the excerpts I have read, but I think he has truly managed to survey Alexander's work in a comprehensive way. He has minimized the architectural points, and explained the significance of pattern languages in software development but also many other fields where they are finding application. I believe Leitner's affordable book is excellent as an executive summary and an entry point into Alexander's works but also an independent overview of the impact of his ideas. I also recommend books by urbanist Nikos Salingaros and the popularizations of Alexander's architectural ideas by Sarah Susanka and her "Not So Big House" series.

15 of 16 people found the following review helpful. A FAST-MOVING FANTASY By s.ferber "Thuvia, Maid of Mars" is the 4th of 11 John Carter novels from the pen of Edgar Rice Burroughs. It first appeared in April 1916, as a three-part serial in the magazine "All Story Weekly." This is the first Carter novel that does not feature John Carter himself as the central character; he only makes a brief cameo appearance early on. Instead, the action mantle is taken up by Carthoris, Carter's son, but fortunately, Carter Junior turns out to be just as good a swashbuckler as the old man. In this installment, Princess Thuvia of Ptarth has been kidnapped by the spineless Prince Astok of Dusar, which abduction almost causes a world war on Barsoom (Mars). Young Carthoris, in his quest to free his beloved princess, runs across deserted cities, a forgotten kingdom, banths (10-legged Barsoomian lions), ethereal warriors, mucho swordplay, giant white apes, and on and on. As is usual for these books, the amount of action that Burroughs packs into a small compass is quite surprising. Whereas previous Carter books seem to read more like fantasy/fairy tales than science fiction, this installment veers even more to the fantastic, mainly in the use of those phantom warriors just mentioned. These bowmen are called up from the minds of the remaining members of the lost city of Lothar, and have no "real" concrete existence. However, their arrows can still kill. In this book we also get, for the first time, a nice, detailed look at life in Helium; what the people do, how they live and the like. We also receive a biological explanation of how Carthoris, who was 10 years old but a seeming adult in the previous books, got to be that way. The worldwide peace that apparently prevails at the end of book 3, "The Warlord of Mars," is shown in this volume to be not as widespread as was inferred, which makes for some nice tense situations. So this is a good, fast-moving, detailed entry in the series. There are some minor problems of inconsistency and fuzzy writing, however, although not as prevalent as in previous entries. For example, in one scene, Carthoris is said to be fighting a force of a dozen Dusarians; three of these are killed, and so three are left. Huh? Carthoris seems to know exactly where to find water in the dead city of Aaanthor, despite the fact that he has never been there before. Wha? Vas Kor, one of Carthoris' chief enemies, fails to recognize him merely because Carthoris is dirty, tired and covered with blood; this is just a bit hard to swallow. Perhaps worst of all, the book ends extremely abruptly, just as all of Barsoom is about to be plunged into that world war. We never learn the fate of several of the main villains, nor do we see the end of hostilities as the realization of the true facts becomes known. This is a short book, and would not have suffered by the addition of such scenes to make it more satisfying. Still, this is a fun entry in the John Carter series, one that all lovers of fast-moving fantasy should enjoy.

Blankenship I first read this book and this series some 52 years ago...I recently dug them out and had another go. They are as fun now as they were then. Burroughs' style is absolutely great and needs to be savored. The books are action packed and certainly reflet a time in our society long past. I feel to understand current SiFi and S&S, you really need to start during this time period. We certainly have come along way, in may ways, but it is very evident that this writer and his contemporaries certainly had a profound influence on what we are getting today. This are books for little boys and girls and thank goodness I have enough of that little boy in me to still enjoy them.

Like father, like son, Cathoris pursues his beloved Thuvia By Lawrance Bernabo It took the first three volumes of his Martian series for Edgar Rice Burroughs to get his hero John Carter, former cavalier of Virginia, and Dejah Thoris, princess of Helium to the point where they could live happily ever after. Satisfied with the combination of romance and pulp adventure, this fourth Martian novel turns to the next generation of Barsoomians. Cathoris, son of the Warlord of Mars and his beloved princess, is one of two princes and a Jeddak who are seeking the hand of the Thuvia of Ptarth. When she is kidnapped by the sinister Prince Astok of Dusar, the entire planet is about to be thrown into a bloody war and Cathoris has to follow in his father's footstep and deal with savage beasts and phantom armies as he rescues Thuvia and saves Barsoom from a costly war. Of course, by the time he catches up with his beloved, Cathoris finds the situation is slightly more complicated than he thought, mainly because ERB never provides a smooth ending for his couples."Thuvia, Maid of Mars" was originally serialized in "All-Story Weekly" in April 1916, which explains the novel's subtext about world war, since one was going on in Europe at that point in time. The original title was "Cathoris," but apparently when it was published as a novel in 1920 somebody wised up and changed it. Thuvia is not as great a name as Deja Thoris, but it is not bad. In many ways this is like the previous novel, "The Warlord of Mars," where the hero chases his beloved across the landscape of Barsoom and has to deal with green men and white apes. Fortunately, unlike ERB's Tarzan series, "Thuvia, Maid of Mars" is really the only time that repeats himself like this in the Martian series, which stands out as his best as he proves in the next and most inventive volume in the series, "Chessmen of Mars."

By lyndonbrecht I am somewhat disappointed in this book. The selection of posters is excellent, and it really is rather global in coverage (mostly India, China, Iran and Palestine, with a few other locales in addition to the dominant European and American coverage. The writing is good but the overall text is not nearly as good as the posters shown. It starts well but then veers into a bit too much art and design; by this I mean the focus shifts from a history of posers, I think, to a consideration of posters interacting with artists and designers. This isn't all bad, but it's a bit too academic for the general reader.There's more, of course. Guffy does devote a lot of space to the political poster, particularly of the USSR and Mao's China, which found posters a useful media for exhortation--and also apparently displaying posters of Mao in one's home was a wise investment, demonstrating one's orthodoxy. There's interesting discussion of posters in Cuba and also--this will likely rile pro-Israeli readers--some discussion of martyr posters, which desktop publishing has made quite sophisticated. Among other discussions topics in the book is an Iranian artist, Reza Abedina, whose work is really interesting, a theme of which is liberating Iranian posters from Western typography.There's maybe too long a discussion of posters from the 1960s. The book has some striking designs from then, including a very famous Bob Dylan poster, but I think if the discussion had been a bit shorter more space could have been used for the political posters of 1968. I also note that Latin America is mostly missing and that there's no mention of Australia. There's a short mention of US federal art programs using posters, which sounds interesting.

An essential read for those interested in graphic design, semiotics, and cultural history, this absorbing chronicle will hold appeal for academic and lay readers alike.

Nuclear Physics By cortezhill This book was based originally on a series of lectures, and is intended for readers who, while interested in natural sciences, have no previous training in theoretical physics and yet are familiar to a certain extent with physical ideas. In conformity with the express wish of the Verband deutscher Elektrotechniker, under whose auspices the lectures were given, a short history of atomic physics, as well as a general review of contemporary knowledge of atomic and nuclear structure, are included here as an introduction...In my treatment of nuclear physics, I have departed somewhat from the method followed by other popular books on the subject, inasmuch as I have attempted to begin my discourse with the theory of the processes and reactions within the atom, and to discuss practical applications in conclusion only. At the same time, it was essential to make the theory intelligible without resort to mathematics, with the aid of illustrative models and by citing as analogies certain more widely known related phenomena...In the present volume, the technical apparatus of nuclear physics is discussed in the seventh chapter only; the eighth, and last, chapter presents a survey of the practical applications acchieved up to the present time.--- excerpt from book's Preface

Beaulieu I have to admit that I approached this book with a certain amount of skepticism because there are just so many books about branding out there today; and they all seem to be promising the same thing; all ideas and no implementation...no way to make happen. So what I did with this book instead of just opening it up and reading it, I thumbed through it, looking at the end of each chapter trying to get a feel for the book and if it was worth my time to read it. After I saw chapter after chapter of do it yourself and get it done advice I knew that I had found the right book on finding your brand and getting the word out.So after realizing that this book was valuable I went back and starting reading it. It did not take long for me to realize that I had made the right decision when on page ten of the introduction is read: Business is not just a transaction: it's an experience. People do more business with people and companies that engage them in the purchasing experience. When you attach meaning to the act of doing business with you, you stand out from the crowd.And that's it! It's all about standing out from the crowd. It's about creating your story, read your brand and then telling that story to as many right people as possible. Get the story out to the right people.As the author says many times; being world famous is much more than being well known. A world famous brand is one that people feel an affinity with. One that they love to visit and talk about.By using the books very easy to follow chapter steps you can: find your super niche, find your brand, what makes you outstanding? What makes people want to do business with you? What is your experience? How do you stand out?The author spends a significant amount of time showing you how to get your business story down to...no not a page, no not the proverbial elevator talk that we have all heard about, but rather, get this .... I only take one... so even if the book is a bummer I read through it to pull out the nuggets. Well, World Famous, is not one that you need to pull little nuggets from. I loved the whole thing.It is packed with interesting and useful nuggets (one of my favorites is the 3 word mission statement). And each nugget is backed with a relevant story.The only thing is the book has a few too many exercises for me. But I am critical of that, since I like to read cover to cover, underline on the way, and then go back to review. Never been a fan of exercises that take more than 30 minutes to complete, since it kinda messes up the flow for me.So if there is any critique it is just that I personally could have had a few less exercises.All the content in this book ROCKED though. Definitely read pages 85 (business personality), 127 (playground and superniches), 142 (the importance of standing for something and the way it relates to your superniche), and page 173 (love them no matter what - buying or not... reminds me of the "Go-Giver" philosophy).Get the book! Marketing is the weak point for most entrepreneurs I work with and I have already recommended this book to several. I even blogged about the 3 word branding idea and mentioned the book there as well. Especially good content for consultants and coaches and anyone else who needs to stand out in a crowded industry.

The book was to the point, clear and helped me get a grasp on BPOS and the BPO industry. I especially liked the workbook section to test my knowledge of the material.

Henrique). Merchant Navy Officer since 2012. He has passed through several countries where he contacted with thousands of different people. Surfer in his free time and sportsman every day. This project arose from the difficulty of finding a profession that he could relate, with economic stability and free time.

Gray As a nine to fiver for the past 15 years, I recently decided that I really want more from the life that I presently have. I purchased this book recently in the hopes that it could provide me insight into a life that is more conducive to my desires. I can happily say that it did that and a whole lot more as well. The writer begins by describing important mantras while talking about his own life. This illuminated my understanding of how other people are achieving their dreams and breaking free from the monotony. I really like the author’s writing style and even though Portuguese is his primary language, he has a superb command of the English.From an insightful introduction all the way to a list of job descriptions that are different than the standard fare, this book has a slew of valuable information that can enlighten and provide a new understanding of what you are able to do with your life. If anyone out there is looking for a great guide for living life more fully and finding a means to do it, you can’t do much better than this guide. I know that it’s helped me a lot and I’m already on the path to achieving my desires.

The respectful author João António Sousa made an very effective solution or guide for the people who are searching for job or doing job but don't get their expected salary! The honorable author described every pros and cons in a way that easy to understand as well as extremely helpful! In the intro the author refers to people like myself, in my mid 30's not happy in my current job because of my indecisiveness about which course of action to take. I'm really interested in the offshore sector but because of my family life I have to rule that one out, at least for now. This book was well put together and informative, not only that but the personal stories along with job description made this book all the more enjoyable to read. It really made me look into myself and reevaluate my options. I think this should be mandatory reading before Leaving high school as I think it will be of great benefit to the young and even some old heads such as myself. Great job. I will be highly recommending this book.
