The richest man in the world decides to corner the market on air, figuring that this will give him the ultimate power over others. Could easily be seen as a caricature of some of our current power-and-money-hungry CEOs.Rather dated, but well worth a read.

One, it demonstrates how there was awareness of how the press was used to influence public opinion and how money could buy (or was though to buy) it. I found this very refreshing. It is also interesting how the word 'propaganda' is used in a neutral way (in 1915 it had the same meaning as PR does today). As to the plot, it involves a father/daughter conflict, class war, a love story, corruption, brutality which is I have seen in for example 'The Iron Heel', 'We' and 'Metropolis' , all dystopian works (two books and a film) from roughly the same period. The style is clear albeit maybe a bit naive at some places, but surely this book gives an interesting insight into the US a hundred years ago, which, when judging from this book, is having exactly the same problems today.

By ttterk We were told (by the author of 'Free Science Fiction on Kindle') that this was clearly social commentary. Be aware that it is slanted to the left. Anyone to the right of, say, Jimmy Carter may find it to be offensively leftist. After all, the hero is a card-carrying (literally) Socialist. I just found it fun to read for what feels like a high school reading assignment on counterculture (for the time) politics/economics.Also, it was fairly easy to discern who to root for and who to boo.
