The online world By Brianna Working for one of the big companies in the world made me loose touch with what is happening in the real world, what sells now and how profit is really earned. Getting a new project on my hands to develop a new website that will enhance company's sells, I found myself researching for advice. And I must say I was happy to find more than I was actually looking for in this book. First of all, an honest succesful person decides to share the secrets that brought him profit, without asking anything in return as subscription or anything like this - so I was really intrigued after reading the introduction of the book. Filled with practical advice about how to make it in the WWW world, where everything is driven by apps and websites, including sales - I really found enough information within this book to get me going. And I have also appreciated the witty style that the author chooses to share his story - makes the whole reading experience more enjoyable.

INCOME: Your Comfort Zone is Your Income Zone: How to Get Out of your Comfort Zone and Drastically Increase your Income (Millionaire Habits), by Michael Lau

About the Author Hi I'm Michael Lau, I'm an Entrepreneur, Best-Selling Author, Amazon Expert, Internet Marketer and Fitness enthusiast. I feel extremely blessed for the life that I live. Growing up, I was extremely shy and introverted. I had lived my life as a negative, lazy, depressed young man that played video games all day. One day everything changed - I looked myself in the mirror and finally had enough. I reached the point of "emotional threshold" and finally made a decision that would shape my life forever. That decision was simple: I will NEVER settle for less than I can be, do, give, or create. I knew that I was so much more than what I was demonstrating in life. I knew I had potential, and had finally decided to tap into it. I started a journey of transformation that would lead me to the live that I feel blessed to live now. Over the years, I made many bold decisions to begin to design the life that I had always envisioned for myself. First, I went to join the Vancouver Entrepreneurs Group that allowed me to surround myself with successful people and program myself to have the same wavelength as them and also read as many personal development books as I can, to know HOW I can break out of my comfort zone and achieve success. The only way to transform myself socially would be to face my biggest fears around meeting successful people and also immerse myself with positivity. I love to learn, and so I've watched and attended seminars with successful entrepreneurs and also learn from the best. I believe the best investment you can make is in yourself. "I am honored and excited to be profiled in Michael's book, " Dan Lok says. "Michael is an ambitious young man who wants to make a difference in peoples' lives. He took the concept that I taught him and expanded that into a powerful book. I recommend you read it" -Dan Lok, Multi-Millionaire Entrepreneur and Founder of Vancouver Entrepreneurs Group

Michael gets straight to the point with no BS approach on why you are getting nowhere and going nowhere and what you can do about it. It's not for the faint hearted reader but this is the kind of book you SHOULD be reading when you want to take YOUR life to the next level. Life is not bunch a roses and most of us are nearly all our lives are in our comfort zones hence the reason we never get anywhere or achieve anything worth talking about. If you are really serious about increasing your income to a new level that will allow you that lifestyle you deserve then read this book and TAKE ACTION. There are two kinds of readers that will read this book, one will say wow this Michael guy is harsh and in your face...who does he think he is...if you react like this, then you are a loser, a victim. When you are finished reading this book and you are excited, ready for action, saying let's bring it on, and thankful to the author for hitting you between the eyes with a big wake up call, then congratulations, you're a winner. You're going places. Best of luck! And well done to Michael Lau for writing such a captivating book.

4 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Rude, Crude, And Off-Base By Vecinka The author comes across as brash, crude, and extremely young. He feels the "need" to use profanity in the book, but in most cases, profanity could have been avoided had the author taken the time to properly express his point. He also tends to discredit common wisdom, such as "patience is a virtue", which he says has no place in today's world. While this is simply my opinion against his, I totally disagree. I'd love to see his take on "haste makes waste", for instance. Finally, I totally disagree with some of the advice given in the book. As an example, he seems obsessed with overcoming limiting beliefs when many agree that focusing on this will simply strengthen them. As others have said (like Steve Pavlina), it is better to "to largely ignore your so-called limiting beliefs. Put your focus on what you desire first and foremost."Two stars for effort but not much more.

The layout has one major mistake that you will notice immediately. Not a bad DIY zine, just an average one that could use a layout makeover. At least I paid for this to support the zine.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Grindhouse Purgatory....Where the Deuce Lives Forever! By Robert Morgan Grindhouse Purgatory is a magazine of which I'm proud to be a contributor. Every article is written with love, wit, intelligence, and respect for the unjustly forgotten corners and alleyways of popular culture in the 20th century. The latest issue features tributes to the late B-filmmaker John Fasano (Black Roses) and wresting legend Ox Baker, articles on blaxploitation cinema, ensemble action and western flicks, and the famed actor Scott Wilson (In Cold Blood), reviews of Criminally Insane, Raw Force, Without Warning, an interview with actor Scott Mayer (Savage Streets), and a whole lot more. 42nd Street Pete definitely has the best magazine around devoted to exploitation movies, wrestling, XXX classics, etc.

The products of mining are everywhere - if it wasn't grown, it was mined or drilled. But the mining industry has a chequered past. Pollution, human rights abuses, and corruption have tarnished the reputation of the industry across the globe. Over a decade ago the major mining companies embraced the concept of sustainable and equitable development and embarked on an explicit process of reform - but has the industry actually changed? This book explores the dynamics of change-making for sustainable development in the resources sector, specifically the mining of mineral and energy resources. The author recounts the stories and insights of over forty change-makers both inside and outside the industry, from anti-mining activists to the professionals charged with the task of reform, introducing the people who are moving an industry that moves mountains. The book takes stock of what has worked and what has not, analyzing the relative influence and dynamics of the key corporate, civil society and government actors with a view to developing new approaches for improving environmental and social outcomes from mineral and energy development.Illustrated with case studies from Angola, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, El Salvador, Guinea, Peru, The Philippines, Romania, Sierra Leone, South Africa, and The United States of America, and brimming with the backstories to the major sustainability initiatives, Mountain Movers reveals where progress has been made and where reform is still needed towards a more sustainable and equitable mining industry.

Review

"A sobering and powerful account... Mountain Movers beautifully and dispassionately takes us through the shades and colorations of mining, the paradoxes confronting the sector, the motivations for change, the unattended frustrations, the mountains still to climb, and the gains achieved so far." – Antonio Pedro, Spearhead of the Africa Mining Vision and Director, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa, Sub-Regional Office for Eastern Africa.

"Expansive and compelling, Franks delves into the heart of industry change – and finds that it is the people. A blueprint for the next necessary wave of extractive industry reform." – Dame Meg Taylor, Secretary General, Pacific Islands Forum and Former Vice-President & Compliance Advisor Ombudsman, World Bank Group.

"Mountain Movers documents the important progress made in recent years in the global mining industry and the urgent and continuing need for further reform." – Keith Slack, Global Program Manager, Extractive Industries, Oxfam America.

About the Author Daniel Franks is a Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Social Responsibility of Mining at the University of Queensland, Australia, and serves as Co-Chair for Social Impact Assessment at the International Association for Impact Assessment. He has held visiting teaching roles at the Earth Institute, Columbia University, USA, and the University of Western Australia, and adjunct positions at Universidad Católica del Norte, Chile, and the University of Eastern Finland.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. The dynamics for change in the mining sector By Amazon Customer Mountain Movers: Mining, Sustainability and the Agents of Change, Routledge Studies of the Extractive Industries and Sustainable DevelopmentHermann Goering once said that every time he heard the word “culture” he reached for his revolver. While I have no time for fascism I must admit I feel the same way whenever I hear someone from the mining industry use the term “world’s best practice.” I have heard mining industry representatives use the most outlandishly lavish language to describe some of the worst environmental management of mine sites, slap-dash rehabilitation efforts and bullying relations with landholders that I sometimes have trouble giving credit to those companies and individuals who do the right thing. This book by Daniel Franks has forced me to be more selective in my criticisms. This is not to say that Franks is an apologist for bad mining practices; quite the contrary. He knows where the bodies are buried; he is aware of the industry’s history and, most importantly, of the many examples of environmental NGOs and communities standing up against the companies to reveal bad practice and demand reform. His book starts with an examination of the impact of the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development Initiative of 2000-2002. This looked at how the mining and minerals sector could contribute to the global transition to sustainable development . Through an extensive series of interviews with agents of change from within the industry as well as many from outside Franks develops an approach to social change which shows how insiders and outsiders can work together to achieve good outcomes. Rather than talk vaguely about how the industry, as a whole, makes decisions leading to greater sustainability, as the industry spin doctors do, he puts names to various positions taken and influence wielded and consequently, gives credit where it is due. I was also impressed by examples he gave of communities, especially in developing nations, resisting exploitative and destructive mining practices. This is not to say the author takes an anti-mining stance. He is, as he states early in the book, a supporter of mining and a believer in sustainable mining practices. This is not written in an overly scholarly manner. It is well written for a wider audience. Hopefully it will be read widely in the mining sector.Drew Hutton

Mountain Movers provides critical context to anyone in "the orbit of the mining industry" By Rachel Maas (Principal Social Scientist, Just Add Lime) Mountain Movers provides critical context to anyone wanting to work in or currently working in "the orbit of the mining industry". It is this context that provides the 'why' things are done (or not done) on site or in head office for many resource development companies. When compared to most mining or environmental/science books about the resource industry, Mountain Movers is easy to read. It tells a factual story and not just pages of dry facts.Mountain Movers is unique in that it provides a framework for the reader to identify themselves and others as change agents and the type of change agent they are. This framework provides an opportunity to even greater understanding of the players in the sustainability business, which in itself can lead to more sustainable resource development around the world.

Fast-paced account of corporate change in a relatively inertial sector By Saleem Ali For full disclosure, Dr. Franks worked in our team at the Centre for Social Responsibility in Mining, and I have known him as a colleague during the time this book was being written and am aware of the time constraints he had to endure in writing this manuscript with numerous other commitments. However, the review is based on reading the manuscript after publication and not on any involvement in the manuscript's design or preparation which were entirely developed by Dr. Franks.------The book traces the history of change in the mining industry, particularly the advent and impact of the Mining, Minerals and Sustainable Development Initiative at the turn of the millennium. An admirable feature of this book is the due respect the author gives to internal and external agents of corporate change (business leaders as well as civil society). There is considerable reliance on long-form interviews with key decision-makers in the volume which gives the monograph some authenticity but also makes the book a bit too journalistic in cadence. A scholar of Dr. Frank's eminence could have provided more direct analysis of the quotations which would have given more depth and critical appraisal for the reader. Instead, we have a measured and guarded exposition of change agents in the sector. The text itself is also rather short for the price and it seems as though Dr. Franks could have brought forth his own analysis and engagement in another hundred pages which were never written. There were also many comparisons with corporate change in other sectors which could have been drawn upon. Indeed, an entire genre of literature on corporate change exists that could have given more weight to the analysis. For example, Jeanie Daniel Duck's classic book "The Change Monster" (also written for a general non-academic audience) could have been consulted or parallels with the change of companies such as General Electric and 3M deserved some attention (particularly since both had major mining interests too).Despite these deficiencies, the narrative is nicely formulated with catchy chapter titles and captions and will be engaging for a non-specialist. Business leaders with limited time would find the book an easy read but should recognize that there is more than meets the eye on the topic. Invite Dr. Franks for a conversation and that would augment the somewhat confined narrative within the pages. Finally, a major industrial change issue that is missed in the book, but which the author had the ability to delve into, is how the recycling sector and the circular economy has the potential to transform the mining industry. Ultimately, the mining sector will need to reinvent itself as a material service provider and there are still many more bold decisions to be made in this major corporate transformation. I look forward to following future writings of Dr. Franks who has much potential as a scholar and practitioner beyond this book as well.

A JOURNEY TO THE CENTRE OF THE EARTH (ILLUSTRATED), by Jules Verne

Review "The reason Verne is still read by millions today is simply that he was one of the best storytellers who ever lived."  —Arthur C. Clarke"Verne has left us an extraordinary book. . . . It has brought delight to generations of readers, and will for many more. There is nothing so rare as the chance to take an impossible journey, and to believe it so powerfully that we wonder if we will make it out alive. That's magic. And that's Verne's gift."  —Michael Crichton

Review "In 1864 Jules Verne published 'Journey to the Center of the Earth,' the charming narrative of the adventures of a party of three, led by a German professor of mineralogy - the irascible mad-scientist type - who have lowered themselves into an extinct volcanic crater."

Review "The professor has a nephew; he's his research partner. They have this theory, he's slightly mad but they must go and find out [if it is true]. Actual classic mythology has said that Mt. Sneffels [a volcano with a glacier covering its summit in western Iceland] is a portal to the center of the earth."

There are more than one translations into english, one with the Main character's name as Harry, the other as Axel.I read the 'Harry' version first, but only partway through as it was terrible! I thought Verne was a bad writter or something. But, when I was older, I found another copy (Puffin Classics btw), and I thought I'd give it another go. That was one of the best books I had ever read, it funny and imaginative. The characters even had character!Well, I looked into it, and compared my new version with the first book I had read and both of them with the original. Mine was pretty close. The names were kept the same, most of the sentences were similar in structure (so that someone like me who can't read french could tell that they were the same book). The 'Harry version' however, invented entire chapters out of thin air, discarded others and changed significant plot points. I hope this helps some of you decide which one to get, and that there is more than one translation. If the book starts with:"ON 24 May 1863, a Sunday, my uncle, Professor Lidenbrock, came rushing back towards his little house at No.19 Konigstrasse, one of the oldest streets..."You know you have the good version.Otherwise, I love this book and would recomend it to anyone, whether a science fiction fan or not.

PENGUIN/PUFFIN EDITION: A particularly good, modern translation By Librarian [NOTE: Although written for the Penguin/Puffin edition, this review may be attached to other editions as well. If so, much of its information is still pertinent.]This Penguin/Puffin Classics translation (by Robert Baldick) of Verne's wonderful book is absolutely terrific. It is accurate and fun to read. (Sample it to see for yourself.) Of course, readers must make allowances for the book's old-fashioned content and style, and inevitably some (unable to do so) may feel it is too descriptive or that the plot advances too slowly. Hopefully others will find it quaint but exciting, its fabulous descriptions to be marveled at as they vicariously travel with the main characters on a once-in-a-lifetime journey deep inside the earth. Fanciful? Yes. Fun? Definitely. Memorable? Forever.Any true translation (such as in this Puffin Classic) rightly identifies the professor as "Lidenbrock" or "Liedenbrock" NOT as "Hardwigg," and his young partner as "Axel" NOT "Harry." (That is how you can easily distinguish the real vs. a false, anonymous translation that, sadly, is still being sold as if it were the real thing; it isn't even a translation but an adaptation, a total rewrite with different names of characters and numerous plot alterations.) The extent of the problem and confusion becomes obvious when one reads the many reviews associated with this and other editions of this title; notice how many refer to Hardwigg and Harry. Sadly, these people, praising the bogus version as if it were Verne's, have not read the real thing. Don't YOU be fooled. This very sound Baldick translation comes as close (in English) to what Verne actually wrote (in French) to tell his story. The old F.A. Malleson translation also gets it right, but in modern times two translations particularly stand out: this one one by Robert Baldick and one by William Butcher. They are both good, the difference mainly being a matter of style. Some prefer Butcher; I happen to prefer Baldick.Don't let the fact that Baldick's translation here appears in a children's imprint deter you from considering it; this is not a simplified "kiddy" version. It appeared first in 1965 as an adult Penguin book, and twenty years later (unchanged) as a Puffin book, and now as an ebook. Butcher's is more recent and, as he is a noted Verne scholar, his credentials certainly carry weight. But that doesn't necessarily make him a better wordsmith. We read Verne primarily for fun and for the thrill of adventure. Baldick's translation enables us to do just that.I highly recommend Baldick's translation in this Puffin edition to anyone, child or adult, especially since its relatively low price is remarkably enticing for a copyrighted, modern translaton rather than an old, public domain one. But whichever edition of this wonderful novel you may be considering for purchase, and no matter who translates it, give it the Lidenbrock & Axel (READ it) vs. Hardwigg & Harry (AVOID it) test to be certain you are reading the actual story Verne intended.NOTE: If price is an issue, you may wish to consider the aforementoned, sound, older translation by Malleson; it can be obtained as a public domain freebie in the Kindle store by searching under: "free books verne voyage au centre de la terre. English." (The OTHER public domain freebie version is under "free books verne journey to the center of the earth" and is the FALSE one. If you wish, download both freebies and compare; the differences are obvious.)

In the story, Professor Hardwigg and his nephew Harry discover an ancient parchment by an alchemist named Arne Saknussemm. They travel to Iceland and climb an extinct volcano called Sneffels. With them is the Icelandic hunter Hans. They journey into the center of the earth, in which Harry gets lost. They come upon and ocean and cross it. While they are on the sea they witness a battle of ancient sea monsters. Eventually they are thrown out of a volcano on Stromboli, an island in Italy. This was a wonderful book, but sometimes it went into too much detail. Still, a classic five star book. I don't see why anyone would give it 4 1/2 stars. It is simply absurd. I recommened this book to anyone with a good imagination.

Please note, this e-book edition does not include the audio recordings of Venetian barcarole.Of all the trademarks of Venice, none is more ubiquitous than the gondola. In this beautifully illustrated collection, internationally bestselling author Donna Leon tells fascinating stories about these famous boats. First used in medieval Venice as an easily maneuverable getaway boat, the gondola evolved over the centuries into a floating pleasure palace that facilitated the romantic escapades of the Venetian elite. Now a tourist favorite, the gondola has never ceased to be a part of authentic Venice. Each boat’s 280 pieces are carefully fashioned in a maestro’s workshop—though Leon also recounts a tale of an American friend who decided to make a gondola all on his own, a feat that took five years to complete. But the gondola is a work of art well worth the labor, and no author is better poised to write about them than Leon, the “American with the Venetian heart” (Washington Post).

Very interesting book - illustrations are wonderful, and CD was a really pleasant surprise By Thanne Very interesting book - illustrations are wonderful, and CD was a really pleasant surprise. I can see why Donna Leon sometimes bothers the "natives," but I agree wholeheartedly with her concern about the Cruise Ships - keep them out of the canal - environmentally, it is insane to allow them in that historic and very special waterway. I can think of several possibilities to continue to make use of the tourist money without the ships on the inside. . .

It's a combination of the historical and present-day role of the gondola in Venician life,a somewhat arcane description of building one, a rant against tourist cruise ships (which I happen to agree with), and a reprise of some of the themes from the Brunetti novels (e.g. Italian governmental corruption).I liked the book, but not everyone will find it as fulfilling as a new Brunetti....

The Gondola in the History, Transportation, Painting, and Art of Venice By Gary Tompkins This short book by Donna Leon takes a unique view of Venice by a long time resident and lover of the city. Leon combines a short history and an explanation of the construction and use of this Venetian icon with relevant paintings and music. As a reader of all of her Commissario Brunetti mysteries and visitor to this her city, I felt that I "knew" Venice already. But this volume puts icing on the cake. As an over three decade resident of the city, her love and concern for Venice are evident in this volume as well. And the music… her love for it and her financial support over the years set the CD and words (in Venetian and English) to the "barcarole" in the center of this "Gondolian" experience. Her attack on the cruise ships which ply the Grand Canal is epic!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. amazing and full of eye candy By Chel Micheline This is SUCH a great, inspiring book. It's packed full (over 300 glossy pages, with full-size color plates on almost every page) of amazing, vibrant, detailed geometric patterns. I assumed that the basic style of the patterns would be line-drawn, but the book includes all sorts of geometric patterns, including watercolor splats, kaleidoscope effects, offset printing, doodles, primitive-inspired designs, Mid-Century Modern inspired patterns... it's just a visual feast.I'm a painter/illustrator that does a lot of tiny, intricate details and patterns in the larger areas of my canvases, and so I'm always collecting any and all books and resources that are related to line drawing, geometric patterns, symbols and signs, and hand-drawn illustration. This book is at the TOP of my list for inspiration. I could literally look at it for hours and hours and keep finding tons of new things to marvel over.I can't recommend this book enough. True eye candy and inspiration.
