Clinton Sidle finds leadership lessons in psychologist Carl Jung's categorization of human personality into archetypes based on ancient mythological symbols and in Jung's belief that each person travels on a "heroic journey" through life. Sidle adapts these Jungian ideas and the symbol of the wheel to create a paradigm of business leadership that individuals, teams and organizations can use to reach their goals. Because he tries to fit so many concepts into his wheel, readers may feel after a while that they are spinning in circles. Nonetheless, the book is loaded with useful exercises and examples. Although Sidle's approach is esoteric, we recommend it to managers with a spiritual bent who want to develop their leadership qualities and discover a style that suits them.

Sidle has a unique perspective that blends mythology and ancient wisdom with current business leadership techniques. His philosophical approach hones in on the key psychological traits we must develop to be inspirational leaders. Be forewarned: the writing style is a bit more dense than the average leadership book.

It's concisely written and the checklists are a convenient tool. If you are revisiting a previous attempt at marketing /sales planning or have been doing the same old same old for too long, read this book and get back in the groove. It's also excellent for those attempting an organized marketing/sales plan for the first time. In fact, for the latter group, start with this book!

Financial Asset Pricing Theory offers a comprehensive overview of the classic and the current research in theoretical asset pricing. Asset pricing is developed around the concept of a state-price deflator which relates the price of any asset to its future (risky) dividends and thus incorporates how to adjust for both time and risk in asset valuation. The willingness of any utility-maximizing investor to shift consumption over time defines a state-price deflator which provides a link between optimal consumption and asset prices that leads to the Consumption-based Capital Asset Pricing Model (CCAPM). A simple version of the CCAPM cannot explain various stylized asset pricing facts, but these asset pricing 'puzzles' can be resolved by a number of recent extensions involving habit formation, recursive utility, multiple consumption goods, and long-run consumption risks. Other valuation techniques and modelling approaches (such as factor models, term structure models, risk-neutral valuation, and option pricing models) are explained and related to state-price deflators. The book will serve as a textbook for an advanced course in theoretical financial economics in a PhD or a quantitative Master of Science program. It will also be a useful reference book for researchers and finance professionals. The presentation in the book balances formal mathematical modelling and economic intuition and understanding. Both discrete-time and continuous-time models are covered. The necessary concepts and techniques concerning stochastic processes are carefully explained in a separate chapter so that only limited previous exposure to dynamic finance models is required.

I've got Duffie, Cochrane, and Pennacchi (as well as some other more empirically oriented books) and I've spent some time with Back's book, but this one so far is my favorite. The notation is very precise and the text is written so that's it's complete and easy to follow. Also, Munk takes a different approach in his exposition of continuous and discrete time. Most books devote the first half of the book to static and discrete time and the last half in continuous time. Munk, instead, tries a different approach. The book is divided up into economic topics and each chapter gives the static, discrete, and then continous-time treatment. I like this approach because it makes it easier to compare the discrete with the continuous time. It also makes sense to divide the book up by economic topic rather than mathematical approach. Also, this book is a theory book, but it does spend some time here and there describing important empirical facts and results.

A seductive introduction to the beauty of mathematics By Sami Assaf The book is packed with fantastic card tricks that will surely dazzle friends and family (with enough practice), but goes beyond this by explaining the beautiful (often deep) mathematics behind the tricks. The book intersperses magic and mathematics in an engaging way that keeps the reader hooked. The book begins with a simple 4 card trick. Well, simple enough to perform; understanding is a different matter. The authors then explain what mathematical concepts (mostly involving combinations and permutations) are at the heart of the trick, and then generalize the principle involved into a truly impressive, more elaborate card trick. After that, it's back to math to see exactly how and why the magic works. Later chapters follow similar patterns, where the reader is drawn in by a beautiful card trick and the beauty is then heightened with a clear explanation of the underlying mathematics. Along the way, the authors give excellent advice on how often to rehearse the tricks before performing as well as entertaining tips to make for a more engaging performance. The mathematics is presented in digestible bites, with excellent examples and illuminating illustrations.But be warned: this isn't your simple high school math! Many of these tricks employ sophisticated mathematics using Combinatorics, Group Theory, Graph Theory and more. Fortunately, the authors are adept at explaining these complicated concepts in a clear fashion, but the novice reader may have some trouble following some of the proofs. Hopefully, the reader will be so inspired by the beauty of the subject, that she'll see it as motivation to learn more mathematics! In fact, the authors' unapologetic goal with this text is to corrupt youngsters of all ages into pursuing mathematics in much the same way that the authors themselves were seduced by the subject. Here's hoping they succeed with you as they have with me!

I keep doing them, reading the math, and doing the tricks again. The more I understand the math behind the magic, the more magical the tricks become. I really enjoyed reading about the other magicians who also use math in their magic. This is a wonderful book!

25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. Mathematics, Magic and Much More By George Poirier Ever since I was a child, I've always had a penchant for magic tricks. Since I've also maintained a great love for mathematics, I could not resist buying this book as soon as I stumbled upon it. Here, the authors, both professors of mathematics (one a magician and the other a juggler), cover the mathematics involved in performing magic tricks. Most of these tricks involve cards, but some use coins and other items, and one chapter even covers juggling. Other puzzles are also discussed, including the I Ching. But the authors never lose sight of the mathematics involved, i.e., mainly combinatorics, number theory and group theory; the authors classify themselves as combinatorialists. Towards the end of the book, the authors pay homage to a few famous magicians of the past and their contributions to the field of magic. Throughout the book, the camaraderie amongst magicians really stands out.With a peppering of a few anecdotes from the authors' pasts, the book glows with the joy of magic (and of mathematics). As one reads the chapters, it becomes clear that writing this book must have been a labour of love for the authors. I have read it from cover to cover and really enjoyed it. Now, I need to go through it again but this time to study the (sometimes tricky) mathematical principles presented and give the associated tricks more thought (and practice).

Tyson Presents an Alluring Look at the Politics, Technological Barriers, and Future of Space Flight By Reviewer #67845 On October 4, 1957, the first artificial satellite, Sputnik 1, was launched into orbit. This technological first marked the beginning of a new era of competition between the former Soviet Union and the United States. While on the surface the Space Race might have appeared to be spurred on by man's desire for knowledge and exploration, in truth, the only thing that made man's footprints on the Moon possible was the looming Cold War and aspiration to assert technological dominance over each other. Adjusted for inflation, the Apollo program today would cost over 200 billion dollars, twenty times the yearly budget of NASA. It is unlikely any of us alive today will ever see man step foot on the Moon or another planetary surface, or see the equivalent of what millions of people witnessed on July 20, 1969 when Apollo 11 landed on the Moon. The overwhelming costs, technological hurdles, and political backdrop are what make the Space Race such a fascinating subject, and it would be hard to find someone who is so passionate about it or conveys these ideas better than astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson.Like his last novel Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries, Space Chronicles is a compilation of previously-published articles and talks over the last fifteen years, with a central theme of the Space Race and exploration (although some of the chapters don't really fit this theme entirely). It is mostly centered on the United States' involvement with a look at the development of NASA. It contains an original prologue by Dr. Tyson with a discussion on Space Politics, with a focus on the last three presidential administrations. A selection of Dr. Tyson's tweets (which are usually interesting facts about the Universe) are scattered in relevant sections throughout the book, and add short distractions to the current chapter. The rest of the book is divided into three sections:Part 1 - Why - Articles detailing with the reasons humans desire to explore spacePart 2 - How - Articles concerned with how we have overcome the barriers to space entry.Part 3 - Why Not - These chapters are mostly ideological articles and speeches about why we should explore space.The last third of the book contain Appendices related to NASA and space travel. I think they're a nice addition to Space Chronicles, although I'm pretty sure they were added as filler, since without them, the actual content of the book is only 220 pages. All of them are easily found online but they make a nice reference while reading and I frequently found myself going back to them. They consist of:National Aeronautics and Space Act of 1958 (the law that created NASA)NASA's budget from 1959-20102010 Space Budgets for the United States and GloballySpace Budgets: US and Non US: 2010Anyone who has enjoyed Dr. Tyson's previous books will enjoy Space Chronicles. Since it doesn't deal with as much cosmology, it is a bit easier read than his last book, Death by Black Hole: And Other Cosmic Quandaries. I also found it more persuasive. Space exploration is a subject Dr. Tyson excels at. For anyone who has ever heard him give a speech on the subject, he offers up very convincing reasons for the necessity of a space program, many which will resonate long after finishing the book. A great example of this is the final chapter in the book, which is a speech given at the University of Buffalo that I originally saw two years ago, and still has a powerful impact on me today. Unlike Death by Black Hole, which seemed to be a bit thrown together and thematically forced, the articles that make up Space Chronicles flow much easier into each other and under their relevant chapters, although you will notice some repetition throughout them. The speeches that make up some of the chapters are also well-adapted, although I strongly encourage anyone who enjoys them to go back and watch the original videos, or actually, to just skip those chapters and watch the videos instead (especially the last chapter). The main reason Dr. Tyson is so successful as a media figure is due to his ability to convey subject matter to his audience, and he does this best in person, where his passion and oration can really stand out.Almost all of the material from this book is already available publicly online. The only original material I noticed was the prologue and a poem (Ode to Challenger, 1986). Although it's been published before, I think the editor has done an excellent job in culling through Tyson's large body of work to pick the best material, and arranged it in a way that makes for an intriguing (albeit very short) read. Some of the chapters are as short as one paragraph, others are a dozen pages or so. Tyson's most ardent fans might find the material a bit too familiar, but as a whole, Space Chronicles presents itself as a nicely-wrapped look at the last fifty years of space travel, and what's in store for the future. All of the material works well in the book, but all of the chapters adapted from speeches are much better when viewed in their original video presentation. Other than the length of the book, the only real criticism I could give it is that it doesn't source the original material. A few of the chapters do this and actually state at the top that they are from videos, but most of them don't. I can't figure out any rhyme or reason to including this information on some but not others, which would seem simple enough to do (I was able to find almost all of it in about an hour). If you are interested in reading some of the articles or videos from the book, I will provide links to all of those that I've been able to find that are in the public domain, as well as book previews from the publisher and Google Books in the review comments below.

Pioneer anomaly...case and point, why science is awesome and the quest to know drives us.42. The best justification for why we need to spend money on space travel.43. Practical appendices and charts.Negatives:1. The book tends to be repetitive. A lot of the stories and interviews overlap so some concepts and thoughts are repeated.2. It is not an in depth look at the science of astrophysics. It is more about educating the public of why it's important to funds NASA appropriately. So those looking for an in depth look at the science of astrophysics will surely be disappointed.3. This book is a plea to fund NASA. Politics is involved but the author treats the topic with utmost respect and care. He is clearly appreciated and respected by both parties as evidenced by being appointed by both parties to important position. That being said, he does make it clear that he is left of liberal.4. No bibliography or extended notes of references. I would have been interested in reading some recommendations.5. No colorful illustrations of space, so this is not a coffee-table book.6. Having to wait for the author's next book and/or Cosmos series!In summary, I loved this book. It spoke to my love and passion for knowledge and the value to our culture of new voyages. No one makes a better case for the need of space exploration and the drive of discovery than Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson. Space travel is not just an emotional frontier, it is the frontier of all sciences. That being said, some readers may be disappointed that the book focuses more on the the emotional appeal to fund NASA than the hardcore science. 83 of 102 people found the following review helpful. Awkward, repetitive. By James Alford First, let me say that there are few supporters of Dr. Tyson and his work who are more enthusiastic than I. I esteem him as probably the most important public educator in the United States. He is impossible to dislike, and his acumen for his chosen profession is dazzling.That is why I have to give this book a poor review. It does transparent disservice to Dr. Tyson's glittering legacy. It is hopelessly disjointed, with no discoverable rationale behind its organization. "Tweets," interviews, lectures, and previously published articles are cobbled together higgledy-piggledy in what bears disheartening resemblance to something rushed to press for the sole purpose of drumming up desperately-needed revenue. I do not begrudge Tyson for avoiding an overly-nuanced exploration of astrophysics' bleeding edge; I just feel that the facts in this book could be condensed, and condensed more (much, MUCH more) elegantly.My passion for Dr. Tyson and his work is in no way dimmed, and I have no trouble accepting that even the most brilliant minds can encounter difficulty when navigating the course of transferring information from the realm of the highly technical to that of the popularly appealing. Indeed, Tyson's prose is more often engaging than not--he just needs a better editor who will help us avoid having to roll our eyes at a factoid that was compelling in chapter 1, but is just downright annoying when it is announced to us (for the 10th or 12th time) in chapter 30 as though hot off the presses.I await Tyson's next effort. In the meantime, however, I cannot endorse this effort in any capacity.

By Alex Abramovich This much-more-than-a-music-book (which is also much more than a book about David Bowie) is a trenchant, invaluable cultural history of the past five decades.That said, it's also the best book about Bowie - and the best book about popular music that we've seen in a long while.

O'Leary takes the time-tested approach of "Revolution in the Head" and applies it to the early albums of David Bowie. It's a book to curl up with and spend an afternoon (and evening) poring over. Perhaps the best recommendation is this: You'll be driven to listen to the music over and over again.

About the Author Daniel Davies was born in Sutton-Coldfield, near Birmingham, in 1973, to a Welsh father and a Polish-German mother. He studied English at Cambridge. His previous jobs include curator at the British Museum, sub-editor of medical journal The Lancet and the Evening Standard. He lived abroad for three years teaching English in Barcelona, Prague and San Sebastian.

By Olaf Alex Firstly and most importantly, this is a great and useful little book. The title "Secret life of money" is perhaps slightly unfortunate because business and economics are already too often conflated with money. „Business models, hidden economics and cost structures of various everyday businesses“ or something similar might have been a better fit.As the authors themselves put it, this book is about „looking under the hood" of business models - showing how businesses actually work. "Hopefully, if you look at the things that make, say, the gymnasium industry tick, or what’s special about Scotch whiskey or payday lending, you’ll notice the same kinds of things showing up in other very different businesses.“ The question of how these businesses tick breaks down into how the respective businesses make money and what that means „to us in our daily lives of interacting with these businesses“.The book easily does all this and then some. In the unpretentious but precise language of the practician writing for a broad audience, lots of interesting concepts and examples are discussed, such as:*„Captive“ businesses and pricing models (economics of lift aka elevator companies)*Economic model of the trade show business*Short-Selling*Minsky Moments, leverage and financial bubbles*The cost structure of waiting for whiskey and wine to mature.*Payday lending (perhaps not as lucrative as it seems)*Economics of credit cards (more lucrative than it seems...)*Depreciation as an accounting concept - and how it works in practice.*“Graveyard (retail) sites” - and (in a later chapter) how gymnasiums (i.e. fitness clubs) work against this logic by subscribing all those non-users in „sweaty January"*"Hedonic regression"*The cost of learning curves*(My favorite) “Kenyan Flowers” (freight rates on “backloads” – marginal cost vs. average cost)*Home mortage financing and the leverage effect*Why genetic screening is related more to preventing adverse selection than generally pricing insurance premiums*The economic cycle of the “claims management business”*When its not about statistical rules but rather about intuiting that they may not apply in the case at hand (what Taleb would call „Fat Tony“ wisdom)*Goodwill and brand value*Middlemen and the role of knowing who your counterpart is*Airline miles as money printing - cured by inflation of sorts*Some economic observations on the insurance industry*Scheduling of maintenance men and the "travelling salesman problem“*Generally: marginal cost vs. average cost, in practiceVery small, idiosyncratic quibbles: the entire shoe example does not really add value to the explanation of short selling and fungibility; some issues surrounding “rip-off” items (plagiarized brand items) are not fully thought through, and while the brief discussion of creditor risk and insolvency is perfectly fine, specifically mentioning the legal concept of fixed vs. floating charges is a bit too „english" perhaps, at least assuming this book obtains the international readership it deserves. Also, bit of system or structure might have useful, as it is currently written as a more or less arbitrary (it seems to me at least) sequence of the analytic „nuggets“ mentioned above.All in all I highly recommend this book - the treatment of each of the above points is quite short, but probably more useful and insightful from a practical business perspective than the swath of „Freakonomics“ type literature when it comes down to understanding everyday economics and business models. BTW - one of the authors, Dan Davies, is an enthusiastic blogger and tweeter (@dsquareddigest), including e.g. on the Greek financial crisis. If you like the book you should consider following him - at least I have learned a lot from him, on many subjects.

Good (but no d-squared digest) By Declan Trott The premise of this book is that economists should understand more about how business works, so they will make better management consultants and investment bankers.I am not sure I agree with this goal, but if you do, then 'Secret Life' is not bad. The Kindle preview (especially the numerous and lengthy chapter titles) gives a clear idea of the subject matter.Compared to Davies' blogging, the book is pedestrian in both style and content. But if you are a non-economist wanting to pick up a few ideas, an economics graduate heading into the business world, or trying to teach economics to business students, you could do a lot worse.

Contains a few interesting nuggets, but overall scattered and poorly written (with lots of unfunny, forced humor). It would have benefited from aggressive editing to remove the bad writing and force a coherent structure on it.
