A futuristic story of tragic love and of the gradual extermination of the human race by plague, The Last Man is Mary Shelley's most important novel after Frankenstein. With intriguing portraits of Percy Bysshe Shelley and Lord Byron, the novel offers a vision of the future that expresses a reaction against Romanticism, and demonstrates the failure of the imagination and of art to redeem the doomed characters.Notice: This Book is published by Historical Books Limited (www.publicdomain.org.uk) as a Public Domain Book, if you have any inquiries, requests or need any help you can just send an email to publications@publicdomain.org.uk This book is found as a public domain and free book based on various online catalogs, if you think there are any problems regard copyright issues please contact us immediately via DMCA@publicdomain.org.uk

Review

“Anne McWhir’s edition of The Last Man is first rate! Mary Shelley’s novel is well served by a careful editor who provides an informed introduction, comprehensive annotations, and well-chosen appendices that contextualize this richly complex novel―Shelley herself would have been pleased!” ― Charles E. By mp Mary Shelley's novel, 'The Last Man' is a work which is slowly gaining the critical attention it richly deserves. Fans of 'Frankenstein' will be astounded at how much deeper Mary Shelley's indictment of 'masculine' visionary Romanticism, technology, and the faults of humanity go in 'The Last Man'. At the same time, the novel is fraught with problems and contradictions which give an already paranoid work a whirling sense of internal dementia. The action of 'The Last Man' takes place between 2073 and 2100 AD. England is ripe for change as the last King of England abdicates his throne in response to public outcry for a more democratic form of government. Lionel Verney, a shepherd, is drawn out of a life of wildness and crime by Adrian, the former crown prince of England. The charismatic Lord Raymond enters the story as the lover of Lionel's sister, Perdita, and the newly-elected Lord Protector of England. Torn between his love of power and his affections for his wife and a persistent attachment to Evadne, a Greek woman, Raymond renounces his political position and flees to Greece. There, he leads a military campaign to establish Greek independence and bring about the end of the Turkish empire. Then, the Plague takes over. The nondescript malady has wiped out the population of Constantinople just as Raymond conquers it, making his victory meaningless. Word of the plague's virulence comes in from Asia and America, and from the southern, eastern, and western corners of the world, the plague begins to encroach inward towards Europe and England. The remainder of the novel tracks Lionel and Adrian's attempts to save the human race from utter annihilation. In 'The Last Man', Mary Shelley gives us a horrifying, desolate prophecy of the future, when religion, technology, and human effort are all exposed as meaningless. Although many might say that she also abandons the redemptive possibilities of art, I think that art provides the novel's only hope. Mary Shelley's dependence on art of every format is clear in the novel's influences - She has Lionel refer to literature, including the works of Daniel Defoe, Charles Brockden Brown, Ann Radcliffe, Homer, Shakespeare, and Jonathan Swift among others. The novel is fraught with problems of gender and power relations. At any moment of emotional weakness, Lionel calls himself 'girlish' or 'womanly,' and the novel seems to privilege women who are selfless and submissive. On the other hand, as Morton Paley's introduction points out, the plague itself is consistently described as female, at one place referred to as 'The Queen of the World'. With regard to power relations, Lionel continually mentions that in the dying world of humanity, social distinctions have all been abandoned - and yet there are still references to his 'servant' or those of other people. The most problematic scene in the novel revolves around racial distinctions when Lionel encounters a dying black man in London. There are a million things to talk about in 'The Last Man,' and a novel so rich for discussion deserves to be read by as many people as possible. This is a book I warmly recommend, so pick it up and discover that there is more to Mary Shelley than 'Frankenstein'.

The Beginning of the End By Greg Hughes In "The Last Man" (1826) Mary Shelley conceived a plot device that would eventually be used by a string of writers: an apocalyptic plague that virtually wipes out the human race. From "The Last Man" would come books like "The Scarlet Plague" (1912), "Earth Abides (1949) and "The Stand" (1978), each work taking something from its predecessor, each work written in a separate, distinctive era. The passage of time would allow writers to be more graphic in terms of aftermath, as readers became more sophisticated and less disturbed by what earlier generations would consider "horrifying"."The Last Man" takes place in the late 21st century: a future without telephones, cars, television or computers. In fact life in the 2090s is not that different to the 1820s, apart from a few political changes (Britain is now a republic). Readers who criticized "Earth Abides" for being dated would have even more to complain about here. Shelley could not possibly have guessed the advances, social and technological, that would take place since 1824. Therefore it's helpful for the modern reader to pretend the story is happening in an alternate 21st century, along the lines of "Pavane".The narrator Lionel Verney spends the first third of the book describing his early life, telling us how an altruistic young man of noble stock (Adrian) took him under his wing, effectively saving him from a life of penury. Lionel and his younger sister now mix in the highest circles, the cultured world of art, literature and music (things which the working class had nothing to do with in the 1820s).Mary Shelley's prose is formal to say the least. Containing echoes of Byron and Wordsworth, it is rich, stylish and philosophical. It is not until Part two of the novel that the plague makes its appearance. When Shelley describes the plague there is mention of bodies lying in the open and the breakdown of order, but she doesn't treat it with the kind of brutal frankness that Stephen King does in "The Stand". It does look as if King was influenced by Shelley however. Here is a quote from "The Last Man":"The ward was filled with an effuvia that caused my heart to heave with painful qualms. The dead were carried out, and the sick brought in, with like indifference; some were screaming with pain, others laughing from the influence of more terrible delerium; some were attended by weeping, despairing relations, others called aloud with thrilling tenderness or reproach on the friends who had deserted them while the nurses went from bed to bed incarnate images of despair, neglect and death."Here is a quote from "The Stand" one and a half centuries later:"Wards were crammed. Patients lay on the floors. The halls were full; nurses, many of them obviously sick themselves, wove in and out, some of them weeping hysterically. Others looked shocked to the point of coma." King also adds little details like the smell of waste and the cries of the damned. While Shelley is poetic, King is direct and to the point. He was writing for an audience whose attention span has been diminished by things like television and films laden with special effects. The impatient 21st century reader may therefore find "The Last Man" more of a challenge.Although Shelley's plague is more gradual than those of other writers, society is still crumbling. Even though extinction is in the air, the main characters still perform acts of heroism. The character Adrian has all the makings of a saint. It's just unfortunate that there will be no one left alive to canonize him. Although "The Last Man" is dated, it did pave the way for a genre that still fascinates and terrifies readers today. Mary Shelley is owed a great debt in terms of apocalyptic literature.

"The Last Man," the best of Mary Shelley's "other" works By Lawrance Bernabo Mary Wollstonecraft Godwin Shelley published "The Last Man" in 1826, eight years after her classic "Frankenstein" and four years after her husband Percy Bysshe Shelley died. Of all of her other novels, "The Last Man" is clearly the one that is of more than passing interest. In her Journal in May of 1824 Shelley wrote: "The last man! Yes, I may well describe that solitary being's feelings, feeling myself as the last relic of a beloved race, my companions extinct before me." The result was one of the first novels to tell a story in which the human race is destroyed by pestilence, which we have seen in novels from Richard Matheson's "I Am Legend" and Stephen King's "The Stand," and films such as the recent "28 Days Later..." However, "The Last Man" is also an early example of a dystopian novel set in the 21st century when England is a republic being governed by a ruling elite. Adrian, Earl of Windsor (and a representation of Shelley's late husband) introduces the narrator of the tale, Lionel Verney, who is the required outsider to describe and comment upon the world of the future.Shelley's vision of the future is essentially a reaction against Romanticism and the failure of the movement to solve the problems of the world with art and imagination. This would stand in contrast to earlier English utopian works such as Francis Bacon's "The New Atlantis," which reflected the Age of Reason's belief that science would solve any and all problems. Shelley begins the story as a romance, with Lord Raymond (presumed to be modeled on Lord Byron) winning the hand of the lovely Perdita and being elected Protector. In contrast to the dire predictions of Thomas Malthus regarding unchecked population growth resulting in mass starvation, an ideal world seems to have been created. But then the plague breaks out in Constantinople and starts spreading. This plague is grounded more in fantasy than science, with Shelley clearly relying more on Boccaccio and Defoe, for her pandemic, which is not contagious (an interesting plot choice to be sure). The point of the plague is that it allows Shelley to show the best and the worst of human nature. When the demagogue Ryland abdicates being Lord Protector, the altruistic Adrian takes his place and makes an appeal for brotherhood, even as anarchy runs rampant in the streets and eventually the main characters are forced to flee England, which has strong parallels to the expulsion from Eden. This sets up the idea at the end of the novel that the last survivors might be able to establish an earthly paradise and rebuild the human race after the plague has disappeared. I was rather surprised that Shelley kills off her female characters because I had expectations that this would be more of a feminist work. Of course, this is because I remember who her mother was, but "The Last Man" is clearly concerned more with her late husband."The Last Man" was probably Mary Shelley's least successful work during her lifetime, but today, which the interest in science fiction, as well as the real world threats of biological warfare and other weapons of mass destruction, this idea of how the world ends is quite pertinent. This is clearly her most important work after "Frankenstein," although obviously we are talking about a significant gap.

In the tradition of Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential and Gelsey Kirkland's Dancing on My Grave, Mozart in the Jungle delves into the lives of the musicians and conductors who inhabit the insular world of classical music.

In a book that inspired the Amazon original series starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Malcolm McDowell, oboist Blair Tindall recounts her decades-long professional career as a classical musician, from the recitals and Broadway orchestra performances to the secret life of musicians who survive hand to mouth in the backbiting New York classical music scene, trading sexual favors for plum jobs and assignments in orchestras across the city. Tindall and her fellow journeymen musicians often play drunk, high, or hopelessly hungover, live in decrepit apartments, and perform in hazardous conditions. These are working-class musicians who schlep across the city between low-paying gigs, without health-care benefits or retirement plans - a stark contrast to the rarefied experiences of overpaid classical musician superstars.

An incisive, no-holds-barred account, Mozart in the Jungle is the first true, behind-the-scenes look at what goes on backstage and in the Broadway pit.

Weed As I write this, there are some 54 other reviews of this book on Amazon, some quite supportive, some vitriolic, some in-between. Ms. Tindall has clearly touched a nerve (or two) in a number of us, no doubt reflecting the importance of classical music to many of us, but also reflecting the disappointment of the realities of career-making in the field for a fair number of us that make the attempt.I went to music school in the 70's (a few years before Tindal), but gave it up, professionally, not long thereafter. In a word, there were too many talented players, and too few jobs. But I've stayed involved with it since, and some of my closest friends are (or were) musicians.Tindall seems to have been among that too-large group of players who were very, very good, but not so outstanding as to knock down all doors in her way. As a result, she had a tough experience. She made mistakes. She let professional relationships become personal and sexual, quickly. She engaged in a certain amount of "self-medicating" (mainly with alcohol, as far as I could tell). It took her a long time to realize that she had to pull out of a self-destructive spiral. But then she did it, and lived to write about it. It's a very human story, and I'm glad she had the courage to tell it.A real resonance in this book, for me, and I think for a number of others, was how deeply one can dig oneself into the notion that "I must live as an artist/bohemian," in almost complete ignorance of there being many other potentially-satisfying worlds out there. Certainly for me, giving up on the idea of living life as a musician involved many sleepless nights. Then, trying to take on the world of suits and ties and commutes downtown was like learning to live in a foreign country. At least for this reader, Tindall touches some very sympathetic nerves in describing her own journey. But Tindall steps on some toes in the process of telling her story. She names names, for one, which is going to make some people mad, and strike others as being in bad taste. She spends a fair amount of space detailing what some perceive as the "fall" of classical music in America, which is interesting, but too easy to view as coming from bitterness. (She is also repetitious on this point, which makes it worse, not to mention tedious.) She can be seen as casting too much blame for her predicament on the system that educated her (although it deserves some of it, without a doubt, from this reader's perspective). And, finally, she describes a fair amount of her musical experiences as being, well, just plain dull, which will probably irritate some readers...although some music-making IS dull. So, this is an imperfect book, that will step on some toes, but it deals with a very human story, that will be of particular interest to those of us for whom music (particularly classical music) is an essential part of life. It's not the only story of a musical life to be told, by any means, but you can look through a batch of the 54 other reviews and see that it resonants with a number of us.

79 of 81 people found the following review helpful. candid, poignant, amusing, thought-provoking, a must-read. By Joseph Klement About ten years ago, I watched a PBS nature program about a unique tribe of chimpanzees that besides eating plants, also hunts and eats monkeys. Monkey meat is rare and precious to the chimps. A chimp who manages to catch a monkey can't eat it all, and shares the meat with a few other chimps. The distribution of monkey meat always follows a distinct pattern. Meat is given to relatives, political supporters and sexually available young females. All the other chimps get none. This pattern sounded awfully familiar... what did it remind me of? Jobs in freelance classical music, of course! The fact that Mozart in the Jungle provoked such passionate, articulate and conflicted reviews speaks volumes about its powerful effects on its readers. IMHO, the people who gave low ratings did so for questionable reasons (solipsism, hurt feelings, personal issues, denial, etc.), unrelated to the quality of Tindall's writing. Winning a couple of orchestra auditions straight out of Juilliard spared me from having to live in the vipers' pit of freelancing described in the book, but I saw enough to recognize it anyway. You can't make this stuff up. The narrative is captivating; I could hardly put the book down. Obviously, not all musicians live this way or have such extreme histories; you wouldn't want to read mine, for example, unless a soporific was indicated. This memoir is well worth reading; not necessarily for the juicy gossip, but for the human story and the larger issues it touches upon.

Great book, but the author is too charitable By A+A I attended both schools with Blair Tindall and witnessed much of what she described in this book. I can corroborate much that occured at both NCSA (North Carolina School of the Arts) and MSM (Manhattan School of Music). Her experience was not unique at all, but was the norm for students attending a performing arts high school (which also happened to have a college department where college students and teachers would prey on high school students, both female and male). My only criticism of this book is that she is actually TOO EASY on some of the teachers she mentions. Blair is actually quite charitable to them considering the appalling behavior we all endured on a day to day basis! She could have really raked them over the coals, but she chose to play nice, contrary to what some other reviewers have said. Blair must have suffered from having been a whistle-blower, but I applaud her bravery. It's also a really well-written book and I found it hard to put down.

By Lin Watchorn Coloring book For someone who draws a lot, but has never heard of zentangle. This was a great book, Because I have a lot of drawing experience already, I didn't read every page. But its great for beginners! Gave me many good ideas for some of the drawings I've been working on. Zentangle is a fun but relaxing way to draw, you can do it while watching T.v. Or waiting on someone or something, Anyone who likes to mindlessly doodle should read this book!

Instead it is an uninteresting little black and white pamphlet that contains very little information. Don't waste your money. There are countless beautiful amazing books on doodling and Zentangle out there in wondrous color for about the same price.

Any list of Japan's greatest screenplay writers would feature Shinobu Hashimoto at or near the top. This memoir, focusing on his collaborations with Akira Kurosawa, a gifted scenarist in his own right, offers indispenable insider account for fans and students of the director's oeuvre and invaluable insights into the unique process that is writing for the screen. The vast majority of Kurosawa works were filmed from screenplays that the director co-wrote with a stable of steller writers, many of whom he discovered himself with his sharp eye for all things cinematic. Among these was Hashimoto, who caught the filmmaker's attention with a script that eventually turned into Roshamon. Thus joining Team Kurosawa the debutant immediately went on to paly an integral part in developing and writing two of the grandmaster's most impressive achievements, Ikiru and Seven Samurai.

For fans and scholars of Kurosawa's work, this book is indispensable as it outlines in great detail the unorthodox writing methods used, specifically the "collaborative screenplay" approach where several writers, including the author and Mr. Kurosawa, would retreat to a Japanese spa and write in tandem, each critiquing each other's work, and then picking the best scene among them.Although I largely disagree with the author's reviews of late Kurosawa works such as Kagemusha and Ran, I found this to be an entirely fascinating book on screenwriting that's unlike any other.

This book presents a systematic design methodology for decoding the interior structure of the Antikythera mechanism, an astronomical device from ancient Greece. The historical background, surviving evidence and reconstructions of the mechanism are introduced, and the historical development of astronomical achievements and various astronomical instruments are investigated. Pursuing an approach based on the conceptual design of modern mechanisms and bearing in mind the standards of science and technology at the time, all feasible designs of the six lost/incomplete/unclear subsystems are synthesized as illustrated examples, and 48 feasible designs of the complete interior structure are presented. This approach provides not only a logical tool for applying modern mechanical engineering knowledge to the reconstruction of the Antikythera mechanism, but also an innovative research direction for identifying the original structures of the mechanism in the future. In short, the book offers valuable new insights for all readers who are interested in the Antikythera mechanism.

Best detailed description of Antikythera Device yet By Prospero Best and most detailed description of this unique and surprising artifact that I have seen. I have a special interest in complex 'pre-computer' technology and computing and this device is unique in that respect. Many references about this device are more for archaeologists, but this one goes into more technical and schematic detail, which is just what I was looking for. I have the Kindle version and even the most detailed diagrams show well in the larger color formats, such as on iPad and presumably on Kindle Fire as well.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. TED Power Tips for Speakers By Fred Pitt Whether you’re a beginner or a pro, this book has some great stuff in store for you. I’ve read a number of books on public speaking, but this one took a very unique angle. First, it used four great TED talks, which in themselves were very interesting and useful. Second, instead of an abstract discussion of public speaking techniques, it systematically dissected the talk and shared what made it effective. The author also uses hypothetical examples to relate the skills to business presentations, which I appreciated. I might just gift this book to my boss – he needs it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Powerful & to the point By Jason Ferrell Page per page, this book packs more punch than books twice it's length! The four case studies were very valuable at breaking down the techniques and showing them in action.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Learn from the best! By Natasha Perkins A straight-shooting book. I love that it was straight to the point and didn’t waste my time. No silly tips either – very specific in terms of techniques you should use with plenty of examples on how to apply them. I’m just a beginner level speaker but feel like I managed to learn two years of skills in one sitting!

Learn to see and mix any color with extraordinary precision!

Many painters don't paint what they see, but what they expect to see, what they think they see, what they remember, or what they imagine things are supposed to look like. Since "the mind stands in the way of the eye," the purpose of this revolutionary book is to train you to paint what your eye actually sees.

Arthur Stern claims that color is key to painting what you see. After working with three generations of students, he developed a program of 22 painting projects that teach the artist to observe, identify, mix, match, and paint the colors of the world with remarkable accuracy. Using a painting knife and oil paint, you learn to analyze every painting subject as a series of distinct color areas—called color spots—and place each spot on the canvas as a unique and vivid mixture.

The fundamental lesson of the book is that if you put the right color spot in the right place, you create a realistic image of form, space, surface texture, atmosphere, light, and shade. As you follow the painting projects in this book, you'll make the dramatic discovery that everything in nature is filled with luminous color. You'll learn to see glowing color in the "blackest" shadow and the "whitest" linen. You'll learn when a green can appear red; how to use paint to replicate metal, glass, wood, paper, porcelain, and other opaque, transparent, or textured surfaces. Before long, you'll be seeing a multitude of colors in a slice of bread, apples and oranges, and a mass of green leaves. You'll learn how to paint quickly enough to capture a "live" still life—a flower that moves and slowly dies as you paint it. You'll even practice with a setup outdoors to see how sunlight and skylight affect color.

How to See Color and Paint It is a must for beginners and a valuable asset for intermediate artists who want to develop a more subtle perception of color. A final section contains beautiful paintings of many subjects that have grown out of projects and ideas taught in this book.

130 color plates; 40 black & white illustrations

Schwab I bought this book long ago, at a used book store, but never had the nerve to use it until a few months ago. I'm now in the middle of the eighteenth project in the book (there are 22 projects.) I've learned so much from this book and recommend it to anyone who wants to learn how to paint in oils. I made a major mistake by not following one of Mr. Stern's instructions exactly and it caused me tremendous grief. I hope to spare you the frustration I experienced by not doing as he said. The book tells you to line the walls and floor of the setup box with "inexpensive assorted colored papers - the kind children use in school." I ignored this and (clever me!) decided to buy a variety of large, much more colorful sheets from a rack at Hobby Lobby. As a consequence, I would spend up to 20 minutes trying to match the color of a sheet of paper, and never succeed. I would simply give up and use the paint that was the closest match that I could produce. I realized just the other day why I could never match the paper's color. I was using the less expensive, student-grade paints recommended in the book. Since this kind of paint lacks the rich, intense pigment load of artist-grade paint, I could NEVER produce the bright, intense colors of the papers I bought. So do exactly what the author says to do: buy a pad of children's construction paper. The relatively dull, muted colors can be easily duplicated with student-grade paint. Here's one other tip. The author tells you to make a "spot screen", which is a small rectangular piece of gray cardboard with a hole punched in it. You look at your subject through the hole to isolate an individual color. (It's funny that he refers to it as "gray"; elsewhere in the book he lists words like "gray", "brown" and "black" as taboo.) In any event, make sure the gray is a perfectly neutral gray, exactly midway between white and black and without any noticeable color tint. If the gray of your spot screen is too light, and you'll see and paint colors darker than they really are; if it's too dark, you'll see and paint colors lighter than they really are. And if the gray leans slightly towards some color, what you see through the hole will lean toward that color's complement; e.g., if your card's gray is slightly red, what you see through the hole will be slightly green. To sum up, this book is a treasure trove of information, and if you faithfully do each project you'll be amazed at how much you learn, and how much your confidence grows.

For anyone who wants to grasp the basic concepts of color in a very visual manner. A CLASSIC! If I had found this book sooner, I would not have paid so much for art instruction.

The reproductions are clear and lucious. The work is done in palette knife so the color notes are clean. It takes you step by step through several still life settings and excercises and shows how the objects were first divided into shadow and light patterns and then breaks down to the finer nuances of color. It teaches the student how to look closer and see the subtle temperature shifts of color. There are also several reproductions of completed paintings in the back that utilize the approach. Fortunately I bought it while it was still in print and cheap, but, I'd pay $60 for it if I didn't own it already.

Review "If you are serious about the profession, you can't afford not to heed this advice on a daily basis. Rob Nixon is to accounting what Peter Drucker was to strategy: He creates new paradigms and fresh approaches to a discipline that would be headed for the doldrums without him. I've worked with Rob Nixon and find him one of the most exciting and entrepreneurial thinkers in the world. It's a shame that only the accounting profession benefits from his genius." -Alan Weiss, PhD Author, Fellow of the Institute of Management Consultants, Member of the Hall of Fame of the National Speakers Association"Rob Nixon has been bringing ideas to the accounting profession for many years. REMAINING RELEVANT is one of Rob's biggest contributions to date. If you read it you will take away value added ideas for growing your practice that you won't find so succinctly well packaged anywhere else." -Jay Nisberg, PhD, Internationally recognized consultant to the CPA/CA profession"If you believe that the public accounting profession is immune from change, you have a rude awakening coming. We have to change what we do and how we think in order to survive. This book offers a roadmap to success for the entrepreneurial accountant, backed up by some pretty thorough and impressive research. If you're running an accounting firm and still want to be in business in five years time, then you need to read this book. It's as simple as that."-Steve McIntyre-Smith, Consultant to the Public Accounting Profession"Rob is a true global thought leader for the accounting profession. Rob understands global trends with local realities. Remaining Relevant is a must read for every firm that wants to thrive today and into the future." -Shannon Vincent, Consultant to the USA CPA profession"Technology is enabling and will demand the accounting profession to transform. From changing the engagement and service mix within a firm, to fixed fee billing and off shoring... everything is up for review. As long-term industry insider and visionary, Rob has the unique capability to help accountants focus on what is important through his direct, and at times confronting, analysis of the profession. A must read." -Tim Reed, CEO, MYOB

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. The good, the bad and the ugly By Monte Huebsch Like the review title said, this book has all three elements. The good is that much of the content is relevant to ANY professional service firm. While written for the accounting professional much is directly transferable to architects, lawyers, engineer, you get the idea. Plus Rob does include results of personal, accounting profession research conducted by his company. The greatest value comes in his arguments for “value pricing” but one of the reviewers, Alan Weiss is a better protagonist for this. I suspect borrowed heaving from his body of work. So this is all the “good stuff”.The bad is twofold. By the authors admission this is an attempt at “leverage” his time to sell his accounting dashboard, Software as a Service (SaS). Nothing wrong with that and full disclosure was included but the frequency and repetition is tiresome. Secondly is the old sales approach of creating fear, uncertainty and doom by promoting the idea that account compliance work is soon going away due to cloud computing and SaS like Xero, MYOB and QB. Basically, Rob falls for the trap of confusing “causality and causation”. Sure data will reside in the cloud. Sure people will use real time SaS tools BUT to suggest that this will destroy the majority of income from compliance work is “frog droppings”. Compliance is and will continue to grow as will government interference and red tape – regardless what the politicians say. Rob is old enough to know this. Superannuation or 401K reporting grows in complexity daily as does export compliance, R and D involvement and investment reporting. The list is never ending and never leaving either. You don’t “scare” people to change but entice them with new and value adding services. The ugly, is a completely unrelated musing about the “leaving speech” that Rob gives all his new team members. He basically chats to all new hires that one day they will be going but he hopes they learn and grow during their time with his company. Unlike Dale Carnegie, who had 43 millionaires working for him, when asked how he hired so well, he replied “he supported and built them" – didn’t hire them. I have canvased numerous HR professionals and none feel a “leaving speech” sends a supportive message about a company “vision” and getting people beyond the leadership of the company CEO. Rob admits that in one year alone he had over 100% staff turnover. It is now clear why. But why promote a failed process? This is Rob’s second book in 5 years. This will tome will be outdated with 18 months.

Every person in the accounting firm should have this book By Daniel Priestley “Every profession is in danger of disruption from technology but accountants especially must adapt now in order to remain relevant. The prospect of business software talking directly to the tax authority software isn’t far away. The opportunity for cloud computing to move accounting functions offshore is already a reality. The question for every accountant is not about survival however, it is about the great opportunity to become a trusted, meaningful and valued advisor to growing businesses. The functional roles are being replaced but the highly valued roles are becoming more in demand. This book should be the seen as the handbook for every accountant and it should become a day-to-day resource for transforming an accounting practice. This is a book that every person in the firm should have and it’s contents should be discussed weekly.”Daniel Priestley - Entrepreneur and bestselling author of "Key Person of Influence", "Entrepreneur Revolution", "Oversubscribed".

Remaining Relevant has all the principles that apply to any service-based business so it's useful for anyone to buy. A hot one is Value vs Hourly - Value has proven to be successful and true in our industry too. As does clear communication channels with clients. This book is easy to to read in a conversation format. The ideas aren't all new but they are new for the accounting profession which needs a refresh. Not sure I want to pay any more for my accountant's services until I can see some distinct measure of improvement and value to my business with guarantees. The motivation and energy to make change for success in your business is infectious from the author. Yes it clearly states in the book that it is assisting a leverage and sales process for other Rob Nixon products but that's part of the lesson that's being conveyed to accountants. How to leverage and market. I enjoyed the read.
