"Since early 2012 I have been photographing fine artists and inviting them to interpret those portraits through their particular medium. An artist’s work can act as both bridge and barrier; at once deeply personal and highly distorted; the lens through which we present our perception of the world, and the world that in turn interprets us." - Allan Amato

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Give an artist her own portrait and see what she does with it By C. A. Bridges Wizard photographer Allan Amato shot portraits of a wide assortment of artists. Then he had them take those portraits of themselves and use them to create new works of art. Both the original photos and the results are in the book, along with commentary from the artists. And while the imagery is wild and weird and amazing, the essays made it for me. So many ways of looking at art, thinking about art. Some are cocky, some are feeling their way along, some are sure they're fakes and will be Found Out. The only real thing they all have in common is that they have to create art, each one of them, almost whether they want to or not.If you're an artist and you want to see what other artists think, if you're not an artist and you want to understand these strange creatures, or even if you just want to look at the bizarre, twisted, or beautiful pictures inside, pick this up and go see the documentary about it that's coming up soon.My favorite quote from the book was from comic artist Bill Sienkiewicz: "And I've also found that for the first 15 minutes of anything I'm doing, I'm actually creating Art. After that, I'm just trying to save it."
