Glidewell If you are a writer -- of humor, of drama, of crime, of politics, of movies, of science, of life -- you should OWN, READ, AND STUDY this book. I sold my first joke around 1967, and have sold jokes and cartoon ideas to national and local comics, greeting card companies, and cartoonists. This book helped me see The Funny in more places. This book helps you recognize, save, and use the material the universe gives you every hour of every day. The best writers are those who can see the universe with great precision, through their own idiosyncratic eyeballs, then relay what they saw to the reader,to the listener. This book helps you do that. JR tells you how to notice and record The Funny/The Drama/The McGuffin/The blue mold in the petri dish. This book could be invaluable as a supplemental text in writing courses, as it shows the writer how to abandon bland vague text strings and capture specifics. A remark on page 27 captures its essential message, couched in JR's humorist's voic: "From this day forth, resolve to act like a trained noticer."One caveat: Robertson is a humorist and I found some of the humor in this book exceeded my quota for "country and corn pone" humor. But I did not buy it for the jokes; I bought it to learn about her method of noticing and recording the universe. Every day I see and write more clearly because I read this book. Do not deny yourself this superb tool.

She will draw you into the humor of her "flat out funny" view of the world By StarReader Jeanne Robertson is one of those special "right-brained" thinkers who can draw you into the humor of her "flat out funny view of the world." As she states so often, we can all choose to see the humor in situations. And, she does. She is not a comedian - telling joke after joke. She is a humorist and does just that. She helps you see the humor in real life with real people with real every day situations. It is so refreshing and will life your spirits before you know. She shares her formula for doing that in her book "Don't Let the Funny Stuff Get Away." By reading this book a number of times already and watching her DVDs, I am fascinated by her skillful and very natural delivery. I highly recommend her work here for speakers and for teachers of all ages, big kids too, to help people laugh and perhaps in the process learn something. Great job Jeanne. Signed a "Right-Brained Thinker" (who also respects and appreciates those "Left-Brained thinkers). :)

Understand and Easily Master Funk Rhythm Guitar This 104 page, detailed guitar method builds the rhythmic and melodic skills you need to be an excellent funk guitar player. Funk Guitar Mastery contains 169 Audio Examples and 12 Backing Tracks from Quist so that you can hear and apply every single idea in the book.

Build and Understand Funk Rhythms to Develop Great Musical Feel

Funk Guitar Mastery focuses on developing the rhythmic and technical skills needed to develop and understand how a funk guitar part functions and sits in the band. As proficiency is developed, funky chords, riffs, techniques and approaches are added to get you grooving like a pro.

Great Musical Feel is Developed Through Great Musical Practice

Funk is a music based on rhythm and feel. Long periods of static chord vamps come alive by the use of subtle and varied musical techniques, and these techniques must be built on a foundation of rock-solid rhythmic control. To build the rhythmic skills needed to play tight funk guitar (or indeed, any music), guitarists must learn to accurately perform almost any rhythm on the guitar before learning how to sit tightly in the groove of the song.

Funk Guitar Mastery Develops Perfect Rhythm from the Ground Up

The first half of Funk Guitar Mastery focuses on developing tight, accurate rhythm skills from first principles. For guitarists, funk is a music that is all about playing accurate and groovy 1/16th notes. Every possible pattern of 1/16th notes is addressed and then combined into original and authentic funk guitar parts. Essential skills such as scratches, rests, triplets and chord stabs are also introduced. The second half of the book introduces the vital elements of groove, chord embellishments (such as adding slides and melody notes), chord progressions, riff based ideas and improvisation. Both halves combine seamlessly to develop creative, musical and interesting funk guitar parts. Throughout, the emphasis is on listening to, and locking in with the bass and drums to help you form a tight, functional, grooving rhythm section.

Funk Guitar Mastery:

  • Understand and develop excellent funk rhythm guitar skills
  • Over 160 notated examples with audio
  • 12 backing tracks
  • Chords, riffs, progressions and scales

Another Masterpiece by Joseph Alexander - Awesome as always By Renee M This is the 6th book I've purchased by Joseph Alexander and it didn't disappoint. I've never before been able to find a great funk guitar theory book. Since the Red Hot Chili Peppers are my favorite band, I learned the songs but never had a real good understanding of the theory behind the Funk guitar fretboard until now. Thank you!

I've been playing for 30 plus years and never really understood the fret board as I should. All these courses have opened up my eyes and my improv skills have improved . I take a little from each book at a time. Probably shouldgo thru one book completely. My method is working for me so far. At present I'm in the Exotic Pentatonic course. Good learning.Glad I found these. Even if you can't read like me they still are very helpful.

It covers rhythm, funk “vocabulary,” chord techniques and embellishments you can add to chords to make them funky. Alexander provides advice on getting the right tone with the right gear. There is also a nice list of 30-40 “Recommended Listening” albums that help define the funk genre.I dinged one star only because of the quality of the paper and ink. It's good, but not as sharp as books published by, say, Hal Leonard or Berklee Press. Consequently, the diagrams are a little bit fuzzy. This is a minor problem and certainly wouldn't stop me from recommending the book.

Inequality in Gifted and Talented Programs: Parental Choices about Status, School Opportunity, and Second-Generation Segregation (Palgrave Studies in Urban Education), by Allison Roda

Review

"Schools across America have frequently misinterpreted privilege (especially the privilege of having well educated, affluent parents) with giftedness. In this important new book Roda brings an equity lens to the discussion of gifted education and raises important questions and concerns about the underrepresentation of low-income children of color. For educators and parents who understand the importance of ensuring that all children are challenged to achieve their potential, this book will be both enlightening and insightful. Now more than ever our schools need to be focused on cultivating the gifts and talents in every child." - Pedro A. Noguera, Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education, Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Development, New York University, USA

"This book deepens our understanding about the ways in which privilege and power are maintained by school choice and gifted education programs. This is an important book for everyone who seeks equity and social justice and recognizes the contradictions between espoused philosophies of inclusion and diversity and school policies that sort, segregate and maintain educational elitism." - Mara Sapon-Shevin, Professor of Inclusive Education, Syracuse University, USA

"Roda provides an in-depth and nuanced examination of the ways in which everyday choices by white and privileged parents can undermine equitable schooling and opportunities for all children. Challenging the prevailing, and often simplistic market logics that shape school choice policies, Roda carefully demonstrates that all choices are not created equal, and that the execution of choice to better position some children can leave others with far more racially segregated and unequal schooling. She calls for a more robust set of public and educational policies that re-commit our schools to the ongoing democratic project of full racial and socioeconomic integration, toward a vision of democratic schooling and society that stands to benefit us all." - Janelle Scott, Associate Professor, Graduate School of Education & African American Studies, University of California, Berkeley, USA

About the Author Allison Roda is Postdoctoral Research Associate and part-time Instructor at Rutgers University, USA.

The rapid growth of the American environmental movement in recent decades obscures the fact that long before the first Earth Day and the passage of the Endangered Species Act, naturalists and concerned citizens recognized—and worried about—the problem of human-caused extinction.

As Mark V. Barrow reveals in Nature’s Ghosts, the threat of species loss has haunted Americans since the early days of the republic. From Thomas Jefferson’s day—when the fossil remains of such fantastic lost animals as the mastodon and the woolly mammoth were first reconstructed—through the pioneering conservation efforts of early naturalists like John James Audubon and John Muir, Barrow shows how Americans came to understand that it was not only possible for entire species to die out, but that humans themselves could be responsible for their extinction. With the destruction of the passenger pigeon and the precipitous decline of the bison, professional scientists and wildlife enthusiasts alike began to understand that even very common species were not safe from the juggernaut of modern, industrial society. That realization spawned public education and legislative campaigns that laid the foundation for the modern environmental movement and the preservation of such iconic creatures as the bald eagle, the California condor, and the whooping crane.

A sweeping, beautifully illustrated historical narrative that unites the fascinating stories of endangered animals and the dedicated individuals who have studied and struggled to protect them, Nature’s Ghosts offers an unprecedented view of what we’ve lost—and a stark reminder of the hard work of preservation still ahead.

Nature's Ghosts: Confronting Extinction from the Age of Jefferson to the Age of Ecology, by Mark V. Barrow Jr.

Review "To the naturalist, who exults in the magnificent diversity of life, nothing is more devastating than the current mass extinction event, caused entirely by humans. In this intriguing book, Mark Barrow confronts the paradox of naturalists collecting specimens of imperiled species and striving to be value-free, while becoming intensely concerned about extinction. Barrow shows through a fascinating series of case studies that, despite some contradictions and ironies, the traditions of natural history, ecology, and field biology have been essential to the conservation movement from the late eighteenth century until today. We should be worried, as is Barrow, that the naturalist tradition is fading from our universities, museums, and indeed our entire culture." (Reed F. Noss, author of The Science of Conservation Planning)“I fear we'll have good reason to think more and more about extinction as this century progresses, and this fascinating (and rueful) history provides a good base for that reflection.” (Bill McKibben, author of Deep Economy)“At a time when the specter of extinction hangs over much of the natural world, it's remarkable to think that the very concept of a species disappearing was once incomprehensible, even to educated scientists. In Nature’s Ghosts, Mark Barrow brings his customary insight to the fascinating story of how humanity slowly recognized its impact on biodiversity, and the largely forgotten conservation heroes who battled steep odds to preserve what remains of the wild world.”--Scott Weidensaul, author of Of a Feather and Living on the Wind (Scott Weidensaul, author of Of a Feather and Living on the Wind)"Long before the birth of the modern American environmental movement, naturalists recognized the problem of human-caused extinction. Barrow offers a concise but richly detailed chronological history beginning with Thomas Jefferson and his interest in the fossils of woolly mammoths being discovered in the West. . . . Essential for anyone interested in our environmental past or concerned about our future." (Library Journal starred review)"Mr. Barrow's admirably thorough record of America’s efforts to preserve the natural world makes fascinating, if sometimes alarming, reading." (Washington Times)“Barrow has produced something noteworthy--the definitive prehistory of conservation biology in America. The book is especially strong in its treatment of the underappreciated cohort of field biologists between William T. Hornaday and Aldo Leopold. “--Science  (Science)"Barrow retraces the history of the earliest European and North American naturalists, from those who refused to believe that species comprising a perfect, stable world could go extinct, to the acceptance of extinction at the hands of humans and the legal mechanisms created to halt it. Although this may be familiar to some, Barrow's focus on the central role of amateur/professional naturalists sheds much new light on how conservation ideas germinated and flowered in the US. The book focuses largely on animals, with numerous engaging stories, e.g., Thomas Jefferson's obsession with finding live mammoths in the West and a 1935 Cornell University trip that located some of the last ivory-billed woodpeckers in Louisiana. Nature's Ghosts is thoroughly researched with hundreds of helpful references, but remains very accessible and engaging to both casual and professional readers. Numerous black-and-white photos of extinct/endangered species along with famous and lesser-known naturalists enrich the text. Professionals in ecology, conservation biology, and wildlife management and readers interested in natural history will find this book hard to put down. Highly recommended. Academic, general, and professional readers, all levels." (Choice)"With rich source material and a compelling story, this book should become the definitive account of conservation biology prior to the Endangered Species Act. . . . Nature's Ghost deserves a wide audience. It would make a strong text for courses in history and environmental studies. By weaving together multiple disciplines, the text offers a solid introduction to the history of ecology and evolution, the history of environmentalism, and environmental ethics. . . . At the same time, the book offers valuable insight into the broader social movements and political discussions that determine the fate of many species." (Kevin Francis Journal of the History of Biology)“Mark Barrow knows more about the history of wildlife biology and conservation in the United States than anyone else. In these pages he gives us the most comprehensive picture we have of how naturalists discovered species extinction and humanity’s role in it, then set about to take responsibility for the destruction of the bison, the bald eagle, the spotted owl, and so many other creatures, even in far off Latin America and Africa. Well researched and clearly told.” (Donald Worster, author of A Passion for Nature: The Life of John Muir and Nature's Economy: The History of Ecological Ideas)

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. A landmark work on the history of conservation By Matthew A. Bille Early Europeans viewed North America as a place of incredibly diverse and seemingly inexhaustible natural riches. Settlers couldn't believe the abundance of birds and fish and useful furry animals. How that view slowly - very slowly, in fits and starts and with many advances and retreats - changed to a modern view of conservation, losing many key species along with way, is the subject of Barrows' well-written and thorough treatment. I've not come across a book like this, which introduces people both famous and forgotten, organizations that evolved into modern conservation forces, and the contradictions of naturalists who worried about extinction even as they shot and collected every specimen in sight. You know of the work of John James Audubon and Aldo Leopold, but Victor Shelford? John C. Phillips? The American Committee for International Wildlife Protection? With other people, like Archie Carr, I knew of them but hadn't realized just how influential they were. I thought I was fairly well read on this topic, but I found surprises on every page, and there are 82 pages of endnotes to reinforce the 360-page main story. This truly is is a landmark work.Matt Bille, author, Shadows of Existence: Discoveries and Speculations in Zoology (Hancock, 2006)

It fills in lacunae in existing conservation histories by (1) documenting how scientific understandings of species extinctions unfolded from the mid 18th, century onward, (2) explaining in more detail than any other work the critical role that American scientific naturalists played, from the late 19th century, in fostering understanding, concern, and political action in response to anthropogenic species extinctions, both in America and internationally, and (3) demonstrating the profound changes in perceptions and values that have accompanied increasing concern about species extinctions in America and abroad. Highly recommended for anyone seeking to understand the entire range of contributions to conservation history, but it should be read along with several other essential studies which complement it in their own ways, including Nature's Economy: A History of Ecological Ideas (Studies in Environment and History), Wilderness and the American Mind, Fourth Edition, American Conservation Movement: John Muir And His Legacy, and Dark Green Religion: Nature Spirituality and the Planetary Future.

Best book i've read in a long time By Brad Hutchinson This is an excellent book that I originally checked out at the library but ended up purchasing because it was so good. The author did a fantastic job of researching extinction for this book and it is packed with information. The references section is very long and perfectly organized in a way that you can easily find where each citation throughout the book came from. This allows you to read further from that source if you are interested in a particular subject. This book should appeal to anyone interested in wildlife conservation, extinction history, nature, wildlife, or even someone looking for interesting quotations.

"Rebellion is a part of youth. Sometimes it's dangerous. Instead of a sword, I hold a guitar in my hands. I'm in the same, rigid world but instead of Molotov cocktails, I've got a computer. It's a much more powerful weapon."

Confessions Of A Heretic is the forthright and erudite memoir of the front man and driving force behind the Polish heavy-metal group Behemoth, currently at the top of their game following the release of their 2014 US Top 40 album The Satanist.

Presented as a series of interrogations by friends and associates, the book reveals a complex man of great contrast--a health-conscious, highly personable intellectual known for his extreme views and even more extreme music--lifting the lid on everything from his clashes with the Polish Catholic church to appearing as a judge on the Polish edition of The Voice to his recent battle with leukemia.

Epic Interview and an overall fascinating read By Ravenous Reader I received one of the first wave of 1400 signed copies shipped from the Behemoth webstore, and managed to pace myself so that I didn't devour it in one sitting. Nergal is an extremely good interviewee (I've probably read every single interview in existence online in addition to watching every single video interview that can be found) and this book does not disappoint. He takes as much of an unflinching look at himself as at everything/everyone around him and is never anything short of completely forthright in his explanations of how he got to where he is now, and why he sees the world the way he does in regards to music, art, religion, freedom. Particularly riveting (and inspiring) are the chapters about his fight-to-the-death with leukemia, as one might expect. He never gives up, just will not concede defeat, Even if he has to commit apostasy "armed to the teeth" with a stack of papers, two friends and a baby for backup against an equally tenacious priest determined to keep him "in the fold." One of the funnier moments in this book.My only complaint - not enough photographs. Only two sections to be found, would have loved at least 2 more. But overall, he knocked it out of the park, so to speak, and I'm grateful he lived to tell his story.

Nergal's book is unique in its format, content and appearance. Its not a memoir ( although the sum of its parts could be said amount to one) -- more a series of at-times awkward interrogations over a period of time. The result is something you just can't put down. Enough said -- go and buy it. It's as good as music related biography/ autobiography gets. Fantastic quality and feel too for a book at this price.

By Stregacattiva Nergal is an inspirational human being. Not only he came out of leukemia, but also he has work hard to be a better human being. Consistent with his beliefs, and he pushes very hard to whatever project he sets his mind to.To all people who judge and criticize non christians, he has a healthy spirituality, overcomes his problems and looks to grow as a person. I wish all of us learn from him, which is why I recommend his book.I love and deeply admire him.Hail S*tan Confessions Of A Heretic: The Sacred And The Profane: Behemoth And Beyond, by Adam Nergal Darski, Mark Eglinton

My personal disappointment with this book is it was in some cases, a word for word, cut-paste from his previous work. Maybe it's good he's put his previous works into an abreviated single book. But, personally, I expected new thinking. I regularly re-read some of his older books, so I didn't need to pay for the repetition. That leaves me wondering how to rate it. The content is a 5. But it's the same content I've already paid for in other books, so I have to knock a few stars off.

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. The Bible of Marketing Strategy By K. Covington If you've never read anything from Jack Trout before, this is the book to start with! Trout on Strategy is the Bible of marketing strategy.Trout is one of the most important business authors of our generation. While some disagree with his views (especially his view on line extension), he has undeniably helped to shape the thinking of the marketing industry over the last 20 years. If you are a business owner or marketing professional, you should not let another week go by without hearing what Trout has to say about "positioning" and "differentiation".This book is essentially 2 decades of writing all rolled up into one relatively short book. Some other reviews I've read here complain about an apparent repackaging of information contained in previous Trout books. Personally, I am a fan of condensing information. I can re-read Trout on Strategy from time to time, and get a refresher on everything I've ever read of his. I would still recommend reading his other books, but this is a great "nutshell" version of his teachings. There's an awful lot of wisdom crammed into these pages. Buy this book, keep it in an easy to find place, and re-read it once or twice a year.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. it's not original By player00 1.after you read this read also sun tzu's art of war, you will find some of trout's ideas in this ancient book.2.some of trout's ideas in this book are presented in a subjective maner, some are posibly undocumented.3.overall it's a good book but it's not a bible on strategy.4.13 dollars it's not a fortune.5.please excuse my english.

Eventually I quit, thinking that I was just not cut out for the job. If only I’d had this book! Janeen Latini's guide to being a leader - not just a manager - provides easy-to-implement concepts that anyone can use to increase their effectiveness as well as sense of fulfillment in the corporate world. However, it does more than that - because it really applies to anyone that needs to take a leadership role in their own life, as a parent, spouse, entrepeneur, coach, these principles will work for everyone.

Miller Love to Lead, Lead to Love is a fascinating read on leadership in the corporate setting, but these insights easily lend themselves to leading yourself in your life and business. I especially loved the way Janeen teaches the the concepts from the perspective of totems: The turtle, dragon, anchor, butterfly and dove. Entertaining and down to earth, this book is a must read not only for middle managers, but anyone who wants to lead!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A must read for all leaders! By Jennifer L. McRobbie Janeen uses a combination of compassion and tough love to describe the plight of the middle manager. What's interesting is the premise that we are all middle managers, in some sense, in some way. As a result, the concrete guidance in this book will benefit anyone - regardless of where you are in your life or where you stand in your company. There really is a better way and we can be having more happy days than we are now.
