Leading technical people is different. General assumptions about leadership, without accounting for the these differences, will lead to disappointment for you and them. This book provides practical insight into why leading technical people is different, challenging, and humbling. More importantly, it will help you understand why it is a privilege. Leading technical people will make you a better leader because you are likely to learn far more from them than they will from you. "I have worked for the author on multiple occasions and found him to have been, hands down, the best boss I have ever had in IT. He is a true leader, not just "the boss". His book is a fascinating read, and it will be helpful for different audiences - those currently in leadership positions, as well as those who aspire to be leaders; also, it really should be a must-read for those who are "the techies" he writes about (and has so successfully lead). There are many nuggets to be gleaned for those folks, too. I would know, as I am one of them. "Mark has taken an extremely complex subject and distilled it down to its essence. He has managed to capture, in under 70 (or whatever the final number is) pages, the heart of the matter. He provides great analogies that anyone can relate to. He provides the tools, and real-life examples of those tools, for people to use to improve their relationships in the workplace (and elsewhere, don't limit your growth, folks!). This is simply a great read and could have a huge impact on so many lives and careers. I plan on buying several copies!" Nina Miller Senior Information Systems Consultant at Coastal Healthcare Consulting, Inc. "If you want to be a good leader of any type of employee this is a book you should pick up and take to heart. But be forewarned, this is not sugar coated cereal. Rather, for most it will be taking a good hard look in the mirror. I have read a lot of good books about leadership. I put this one right up there with Max Depree’s “Leadership is an Art.” And, as one of those overly candid “techies” Mark speaks about in the book I am not one for mincing words. "I have known Mark for many years and also had the good fortune to work with him. He is strangely the most humble and the most candid person I know. He walks his talk. And he has a damn fine walk. "Mark taught me a lot about being a leader. Things I practice (or forget to practice) on a daily basis. Much of that teaching you will find contained within the covers." By Jason M “Leading Technical Teams” is a must-have book for leaders or co-workers of technical/creative staff. The format of the book is concise and engaging, with practical real-world examples throughout.Technical and creative people are often maligned and misunderstood in the workplace by leadership and other non-technical peers. In a refreshing approach, this book completely avoids typecasting - it explains the interpersonal dynamics of the technical/creative employee, and then asks leaders to own and be accountable for their part of the relationship dynamic. It articulates an empathetic, understanding way of approaching technical employees with the goal of bringing out the best in them.“Leading Technical Teams” also excels at meshing topics that appear contradictory on their own, but when taken as a whole, gel together into a cohesive whole. A great example of this is Chapter 9, which speaks to getting technical staff ready for their next job. Chapter 10 then switches gears to employee retention and why retention of quality technical staff is so critical. The overarching theme here is that investment in and understanding of the technical employee (developing skills to ready them for their next job) builds trust and rapport. Long term, this kind of strategy yields more opportunity to retain quality technical employees - a win-win scenario for everyone.“Leading Technical Teams” is a refreshing and highly recommended read for those who lead technical and creative people in the workplace.

Excellent Reference Material By CL Cohen Whether you work with a technical team outside of your company, on a technical team within your company or manage a technical team, this is an excellent reference on the types of folks you will encounter. If there is one piece of information you are able to draw from this book, it's another tool you can add to your work tool box. I work on a technical team, so I found the book very helpful with the types of people I work with on a daily basis. Not only on my team, but the resources that I work with in the field.
