A thought-provoking architectural monograph on one of the most renowned and original classicist practices today. Quinlan and Francis Terry Architects is a British firm that specializes in new Classical architecture. Their work is a delightful expression—in plaster and marble, in brick and wood, in stone—of exuberant timelessness, where fluted columns rise beside doorways to explode in Corinthian capitals of exquisite craftsmanship and structural integrity. Throughout the work, attention to detail, to craftsmanship, and to reasoned proportions is apparent.Quinlan Terry is at home in every traditional style, from Classical Greek and Roman to the many forms of Gothic and Renaissance. Terry’s son and partner, Francis, is recognized as a brilliant talent in his own right and is as highly regarded for his thoughtful design as for his breathtaking architectural drawings. Together, the duo are at the heart of a resurgent interest in an architecture and design that is both livable and inspiring. This book features the firm’s work from 2005 to 2015, and includes Kilboy, a country house in County Tipperary, Ireland; Kingsham Farm in Sussex, England; and ongoing work, such as Locuston Estate in Kentucky. It also showcases more than forty master drawings by Francis Terry, renderings that are at once beautiful and expressive of one of the highest aims of architecture—they elevate the soul—much like the houses and spaces built by this extraordinary firm.

The discussion of how the architects arrived at the historically based solutions in designing the various homes was interesting, but could have been better reinforced with more pictures of entire rooms rather than small details.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Can classical architecture be for the common man? By Jay Scott Anderson This is an excellent work on the work of classists Quinlan and Francis Terry. One of the criticisms of classical architecture practiced in our time is that it is not conducive to our time and lifestyles. This is not true, but the relevance of classical architecture could be better argued if floor plans were published to further show the adaptability. While this work shows the best of the best for the wealthiest patrons, it would be helpful to see it's application as well to the masses.
