About the Author Angelika Bammer is Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Humanitiesand Comparative Literature at Emory University, USA. She has receivedfellowships from the Mellon Foundation, the National Endowment for theHumanities, and the National Humanities Center and is the author ofPartial Visions: Feminism and Utopianism in the 1970s, the editor ofDisplacements: Cultural Identities in Question, and the producer of amulti-media installation of her work on Memory Sites: Destruction, Lossand Transformation. Her engagement with the issues explored in thevolume on academic writing that she has co-edited has marked much of her professional career. Most recently, she has developed a set of graduate courses and workshops on academic writing called "The Art of ScholarlyWriting," "Experiments in Scholarly Form," and "Explorations inInterdisciplinary Scholarship" for which she was honored with theprestigious Emory Williams Award for distinction in Humanities teaching.Ruth-Ellen Boetcher Joeres is Professor Emerita of German and Women's Studies atthe University of Minnesota, USA. She was the editor of Signs from1990-1995 and has received fellowships from the Fulbright Foundation,the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Alexander vonHumboldt-Stiftung, and the American Philosophical Society. She was therecipient of the 2004 Distinguished Women Scholars Award in Humanities,Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of Minnesota. The future must be clear By Hande Z In this age of digital media (and digital everything), are we sacrificing speed for style, without getting rid of the age-old problem of turgid writing that has nothing but unhelpful density? The contributors of this book point us to the new problems and remind us of the old ones. They exhort intellectuals (who are in danger of extinction – perhaps just a massive evolution into a breed that may not be recognisable as intellectuals) to break free from bad convention and employ technology to create a brave new world of scholarly writing.In her chapter ‘The Work of Writing’ by Jane Gallop, we will find familiar her dismay in the process that rigorous academic writing demands, and the joys that perseverance might bring. Bammer writes about the perils of ‘academic-speak’, contending that the claim that history itself is not a problem but the writing of it is, is too sweeping. But she acknowledges the difficulties that stand in the way of the writer; ultimately, the completed story must justify itself. Lisa Ruddick’s ‘When Nothing is Cool’ is a scholarly work on selfhood and the scholarly writer; and the surreptitious poison of deconstruction as a form of advancing fake scholarship, and worse, using that in such destructive ways in literary criticism that it leaves us with nothing left to appreciate.Law, too, has not been spared. K N Day’s ‘Stories and the Language of Law’ provides many instances of the absurdity of speaking a language no one else comprehends. While we can speak of the community in the law and those outside it as outsiders, should writing law be designed to exclude the latter from understanding it? After all, law is not a connection between the law community and the rest – law is integral, the law community is the bridge between law and the rest. Christy Brzonkala was raped when she was a freshman. Her case in court travelled through layers of court hierarchy all the way to the US Supreme Court, and in the process, the professionals were so concerned with the applicability of the Violence Against Women’s Act that no one understood what Christy Brzonkala said at the very start of her story when she was asked by her rapists, and which she maintained through her second ordeal in the court system. All she said was, ‘No’.
