It's packed with very well done watercolor sketches of plants, fruits and vegetables. There are color swatches and lots of margin notes from the artist, Mary Ann Scott. I've already gotten a lot of great art ideas from this book and I'm sure it will continue to serve me very well for many years to come.

As an occasional student at Denver Botanical Garden's program, I found this book insightful, marvelous, and encouraging. Seeing the author's slow start and watching her progress to a brilliant was amazing and reassuring. It was also helpful to read the tutor's comments and gain insight to how the Eden distance program works.
4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. certainly not a guide By Nuk On the back of this book it says: "full of hints, tips and colour swatches". It does contain colour swatches, it's true. But as for the general advice, this is what you get: Pay attention to leaves and their attachment, pay attention to the stem, draw all unseen edges, which can be erased before painting is begun, odd numbers work better than even ones in a composition, check the tonal values of your painting by taking a black and white photocopy. Maybe, I missed a couple more. That's about it for the tips. Then you will see a lot of very nice pictures of botanical art accompanied by a text going like this: "My first wash was a transparent mix of this and that, then I painted the veins...". I do not consider this as good advice because it is very specific advice for the very species in front of Mary Ann's eyes. I don't think, this book alone could work as a guide for aspiring botanical artists and I didn't get inspired (rather dicouraged) by the polished work of the author.Since the subtitle of this book claims to be a guide and inspiration which it was not for me, I rate it 3 stars.
