Beam Piper's work into the public domain publishers like Aegypan Press have finally begun to bring Piper's work back into print and for that fans of Piper owe them a debt of gratitude. While Piper's novel Lord Kalvan of Otherwhen is perhaps the most well-known of Piper's Paratime yarns it is Time Crime that gives us the most extensive insight into the "First Level" civilization that guards the Paratime Secret of a multitude of parallel worlds while simultaneously exploiting them for its own gain. In this novel the Paratime Police discover a cross-time slavery ring run by the Wizard Traders, a shadowy organization with ties to powerful interests in First Level society. Led by Verkan Vall--known by Lord Kalvan in his undercover role as "Trader Verkan"--the Paracops seek to discover the hidden base of the Wizard Traders while the mysterious crime syndicate's allies seek to erode political support for the Paratime Police at home. Part crime drama, part political intrigue, and all sci-fi action this novel is a great introduction to Piper's Paratime stories and to his work more generally. Also recommended from Piper's Paratime Chronicles are Last Enemy, The Complete Paratime, and the authorized Lord Kalvan sequels Great Kings' War, Kalvan Kingmaker, and Siege of Tarr-Hostigos.

Expanded version of a classic By Jens Guld This is an expanded version of Beam Piper's original. The first two thirds are Beam Piper's original story. This part of the book I give five stars. The last third has been written after Beam Piper' death by Carr.I rate it between one and two stars.

With a short novella, 99 pages, you don't get the level of involvement that you would get with a novel, but, surprisingly, with Piper's Paratime stories, all short stories or similar length novellas, you actually get a great deal of action, adventure, and a glimpse into a parallel reality. With Piper's Paratime series I feel that this should have been a longer, more involved and more developed series of stories, perhaps even a series of novels. Then again, this was a story written for the media of the time, primarily periodicals, and many stories were serialized over several issues. As with so much of his other work, Piper's Paratime stories are crammed with action, plot twists, and thoughtful observations on politics, religion, social mores...etc. Piper was creative, inventive, willing to explore the impact of religion on politics, science on society, and so on. Yet he always seemed to deliver the sort of action packed adventure that so many have come to identify with science fiction. Piper's work, most of it from almost 60 years ago, holds up amazingly well. His views on socialism and fascism are certainly tinged with a 1950's view of the Red Peril of his day, yet, he never seems to lose sight of plot, characters, and above all; action. In spite of the political and social commentary woven into many of his tales, Piper never seems to lose the tempo of the action or the track of the plot. He never goes off on a tangent, and he never wastes words. I just wish he had written more. For free on Kindle. Every one of Piper's works is worth reading.
