Tree of Life By Jeremy Briell The local bookshops are filled to the brim with books on how to get rich, but one that explores what that means and why that matters is rare. A just released book by Chad S. Hamilton does so in a way that has a surprising twist. It begins as a challenge to the normative perspective of money and patiently but boldly draws the reader into a biblical point of view through a slew of reflective questions and illuminating anecdotes and quotations. Deep Wealth: An Exploration of Money, Meaning and What Really Matters is written by a professional with years of experience assisting people in realizing their financial dreams. Hamilton's financial wisdom and deep faith form the perfect foundation for a book that is as evangelical and a call to true Christian action as it is an inspiring, financial game changer.Adhering to the metaphor of a tree, it begins with “the seeds” of wealth (or human capital). The reader is encouraged to rethink the nature of wealth, the purpose of work, and the nature of retirement. As Hamilton explains it, the old mentality that wealth is based on scarce resources has been displaced in thriving economies with an “’abundance mentality’”. It posits that wealth is boundless because it rests on human ingenuity to “manipulate and rearrange raw materials”. So, what is your unique contribution to society? These are the seeds of your wealth!Once you have determined your “seeds,” it’s time to cultivate them. The second section, “the soil” (or spiritual capital), is about doing just that. It challenges the attitudes we hold towards money. The dynamics are illustrated with a fascinating examination of “money personality types” that demonstrates how our innermost needs or desires for comfort, pleasure, success, money, control, security or approval can dominate how our money is spent. I come to realize that I gravitate towards “the pleasure seeker” type. My love of cappuccinos and Haagen-Dazs ice cream and sugary snacks of all sorts and music and relaxation are constantly lightening my wallet. The shame of it is, these innermost desires take hold of us and become merciless gods who refuse to be satisfied, or as Hamilton phrases it, they apply a “’root tax’” to your finances. It would be hard to leave this section without learning something about what makes you tick in terms of how you use your money.Owing to the fact we seldom reflect on our heart’s desires, financial decisions rarely reflect the old axiom “spend less than you earn.” This explains why Americans today, although they are tenfold richer than 90 years ago, are indebted twentyfold. The remedy is to consciously center your finances on dreams that inspire you and your wish to leave a legacy. Are your hopes and dreams grand enough and believable enough to inspire the sacrifices and perseverance required to realize them?Now that you have determined your dreams, it is time to make them a reality. The next section, “the green” (or financial capital), addresses the practicalities of your plan, including investment, portfolio construction, insurance, retirement and estate planning. The “goal is to construct a plan based on conservative assumptions that takes into account various contingencies that could capsize even the best of intentions.” Even for a financially illiterate individual such as myself, I found each area to be instructive and made accessible through simple yet elegant language.The final section, “the fruit” (or social capital), situates the message on living for others through Jesus Christ and makes reading the book a moving experience. It stands as a remarkable challenge to invest our God-given talents, wealth and abilities towards acts of generosity and compassion. Hamilton makes the argument that people who devote their lives to achieving something for themselves end up realizing how meaningless their lives have become, but those who sacrifice for others reap the far greater reward of having lived a life that matters.The life worth aspiring to is a life of service. It is the impossible dream that is possible if what is most important to us can never be taken away. Truly having “deep wealth” is to discover the hidden pearl of infinite value, as is illustrated in the Gospel of Matthew. Its unearthing unlocks an abundance that extends far beneath the surface. This heavenly treasure is a life anew in Jesus Christ. And it prompts a proper ordering of our talents and financial resources to the service of God and others:“Jesus on the cross is actually him on a tree, the tree of eternal life, and he is the fruit of that tree. If we, too, become the fruit (or what C.S. Lewis called ‘little Christs’), we will take part in a vast and glorious mission of love and grace that has been permeating humanity for the past 2,000 years. We become seeds of fruit that fall to the ground.”

By Angela Granata As a financial planner myelf what I found most captivating was the way in which the author was able to take such a complex subject matter, one filled with a myriad of possibilities and keep it simple. We all know that just by saying the words financial planning, legacy or wealth is enough to make you sigh with comfort or even concern. Either way a dicussion around ones' money stirs the deepest emotions in all of us. It is not enough to say what does money mean for you but rather what is the story of your life and what you most want to be remembered for. As a practicing financial planner for over 25 years I am always trying to refine my craft to better serve the client and their needs. This book will be one I will treasure and provide to clients at the first introduction. This book will help to refine a persons goals and objectives around money and most of all --life. The book is beautifully written and crafted with such sincere passion and a desire to help a person fulfill their life's meaning. I plan to read it again and again. Just as the seasons of life foster additional growth in all of us and as we get closer to the true meaning of wealth it will only serve to plant my roots deeper.
3 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Inspiring! By Erika Quinn Truly an excellent reading experience, I would challenge anyone to not be inspired in some way by this book. It encompasses the importance of who we are, what drives us and why. Deep Wealth concisely brings to light a way to bring your goals and purpose to fruition. I should offer a warning that your current ideas of success may change after reading this. I am not very interested in the subject of finance, I don't really want to think of a retirement plan much less read a book about it. I read this book knowing I have to consider this, thinking it may be a bit of a chore. It was not! The things that once looked so big and overwhelming make much more sense now. I am impressed by the way the author touches on so many things in such a concise way. It is apparent to me that he was instructed to bring these ideas to the world and guided by his faith while doing so. I feel that it will be a great reference many times over in my life and personal relations. I've gained insights from the book that I have begun to apply across many different aspects of my life, and I think others who read it will do the same.
