Space As The Wild West By Crusty Critic Originally published in 1961, and therefore having the flat characters of that era's SF, still this book is full of interesting ideas and events, and even breaks the gender gap with some real female characters, instead of standard, adoring love interests. In the near future, Earth is crowded and tense, while space is not, and so governments, the UN, corporations, entrepreneurs, and criminals flood out into the solar system, just as they did in the US when it opened up to Europeans. A group of "nerds," including a woman, build their own space gear (except for suits, which they must buy) and get lifted into orbit where they inflate their plastic space ships, called "bubbles" for obvious reasons, one of a number of the fascinating ideas, and something I have never seen elsewhere in SF. They separate and have various adventures in some well-realized frontier cultures, such as in the asteroid belt. I got it because it was free and I was curious after reading about Raymond Gallun. Too bad he didn't publish more.

REI space camping meets atomic rockets meets lunar prospecting meets wild west asteroids all played out against a backdrop of sentient plants, violent criminal gangs and a lost civilization from a destroyed planet known only through artifacts like necklaces, space suits and unprocessed rolls of film. It's fun to read, because the setting is fun with good stock characters and great worlds to explore.(Intriguingly, for all its bravado, there is a dark note, a poignancy that grows as the story progresses. There is optimism, but with a limited focus. As I said, there's a lot to read here. It's a really great bad book.)

Bernie Madoff was a king of the financial world and a beloved philanthropist. But very few people knew that he was quietly running the largest hedge fund in the world, a fund that eventually spread to over forty nations and handled tens of billions of dollars.

Harry Markopolos was a little-known number cruncher at a Boston equity derivatives firm analyzing investment products. A marketer for that firm, Frank Casey, handed Harry a prospectus outlining Madoff’s strategy and asked him to create a similar product. Harry sat down and looked at the numbers. The numbers didn’t add up. For the next ten years, the investigative team Markopolos recruited warned the government, the industry, and the financial press that the largest and most successful hedge fund in the industry was a total fraud and that the respected and admired Bernie Madoff was a crook. But no one would listen.

This is the thrilling, complete story of the pursuit of the greatest financial criminal in history. The incredible investigation takes listeners inside the financial industry, revealing the never-before-told stories behind the headlines. No One Would Listen is the frighteningly true story of massive fraud, governmental incompetence, and criminal collusion that has changed thousands of lives forever―as well as the world’s financial system.

Amazon.com Review Harry Markopolos and his team of financial sleuths discuss first-hand how they cracked the Madoff Ponzi scheme

No One Would Listen is the exclusive story of the Harry Markopolos-lead investigation into Bernie Madoff and his $65 billion Ponzi scheme. While a lot has been written about Madoff's scam, few actually know how Markopolos and his team-affectionately called "The Fox Hounds" by Markopolos himself, uncovered what Madoff was doing years before this financial disaster reached its pinnacle. Unfortunately, no one listened, until the damage of the world's largest financial fraud ever was irreversible.

Since that time, Markopolos openly has testified and questioned the enforcement and fraud investigation capabilities of the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), shared a sliver of this page-turning story with 60 Minutes, and become perhaps the world's most visible and insightful whistleblower on fraud and conflicts of interest in financial markets.

Throughout the book, Markopolos and his Fox Hounds tell their first-hand story of investigating Madoff-with the help of bestselling author David Fisher. They explain how they discovered the fraud, and then how they provided credible and detailed evidence to major newspapers and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) many times between 2000 and 2008, only to have his warnings ignored repeatedly by the SEC.

  • Provides a firsthand account of how Markopolos uncovered Madoff's scam years before it actually fell apart
  • Discusses how the SEC missed the red flags raised by Markopolos
  • Describes how Madoff was enabled by investors and fiduciaries alike
  • The only book to tell the story of Madoff's scam and the SEC's failings by those who saw both first hand

Despite repeated written and verbal warnings to the SEC by Harry Markopolos, Bernie Madoff was allowed to continue his operations. No One Would Listen paints a vivid portrait of Markopolos and his determined team of financial sleuths, and what impact they will have on financial markets and financial regulation for decades to come.

From Publishers Weekly Starred Review. Markopolos, the whistleblower who filed five unheeded complaints against Ponzi king Bernie Madoff over nine years, has produced an astonishing true-life whodunit set amidst the personalities, plots, and international intrigue of Wall Street. Having collected damning information on money manager Madoff-the respected co-founder of NASDAQ who ran the largest financial scam in history-since 1999, Markopolos's work as a chartered financial analyst and certified fraud examiner, aided by an industry journalist and two colleagues from his days as a derivatives portfolio manager, lays bare the Security and Exchange Commission (SEC) as a tragically inept regulating agency that "didn't give a rat's ass about protecting investors," and seemed to consider Madoff "just another guy cutting some corners." Realizing he had not one but two powerful opponents-"Madoff and this nonfunctioning agency"-Markopolos refused to give up, despite fearing for his life and his family; accordingly, he transmits his team's determination and fascination in contagious detail. The hows and whys of Madoff's eventual arrest, Markopolos's subsequent appearances before Congress, and the carnival of press coverage makes a satisfying conclusion to this strange epic; Markopolos also includes complete documentation of his formal submissions to the SEC, plus his recommendations for much-needed reform at the agency.

Review updated account of his struggle to alert authorities to Madoff s crimes. (Guardian, February 2011).

A true David and Goliath story By Accounting Junkie Although I was not an investor, I have been intrigued by the Madoff scandal since it exploded in December 2008. Ever since then, I have spent hours poring over articles written in the press and documents released by the government and watched (and rewatched) all the hearings on this massive fraud. I even attended one of Harry Markopolos' speaking events to make sure that my television screen did not conjure up such a noble public servant. Of course, it is only appropriate that I would have a copy of "No One Would Listen" in my hands on the first day of its release. Admittedly, I expected the book to be more or less a summary of everything I have learned thus far - I was very wrong. "No One Would Listen, " a true David and Goliath story, is one of the most riveting nonfiction I have ever read.In the book, young innocent David is portrayed as a "wildly eccentric quant" from Boston named Harry Markopolos who tried to defend his country from the nine feet tall Philistine giant Goliath, portrayed as Bernie Madoff. King Saul of Israel and his army (the SEC) were terrified of Goliath. "No One Would Listen" is a 10-year firsthand account of how Harry and his three friends tried to warn the government, the industry, and the press that the founder of the most successful broker-dealers in the financial industry was actually the biggest crook in history. Unfortunately, "No One Would Listen" does not have the same happy ending as the biblical David v. Goliath battle. For the past few days, I have been reading reviews on the book and found a lot of derogatory comments about Harry's character and his book. I have to wonder to myself if these reporters read the same book that I did and why they would want to tag their name with such unsubstantiated assertions. Before I continue on the book, I have to point out some false information printed by some media outlets. These book reviews only reconfirm the financial mediocrity in the press that Harry and his team had to deal with the past 10 years - that is why no one would listen.First, we know that in its 73 years of existence, the SEC has a history of treating whistleblowers like dirt and has only paid 2 whistleblower bounties. One reward, as told in the book, was in the amount of $3,500. I'm sick and tired of people throwing that Harry only went to the SEC because he was looking for a bounty. He knew from the start that his chance of receiving a bounty was remote. Even if he did receive a bounty, is $3,500 worth hundreds of hours of investigative research while he was most likely making a comfortable 6-figure salary at his previous employment?Second, some reporters claimed that the reason why no one would listen is because Harry is some sort of nut that rubbed the SEC the wrong way and that he was overly paranoid for fearing that Madoff may come after him. One only has to watch Harry's Feb. 4, 2009 testimony to Congress to confirm this man's articulate manner and brilliance. Do your research on his background, and you will see how aware people are of his talents and credibility. The reason why no one would listen is because the fraud was so unbelievable - Bernie Madoff was filthy rich, why would he need to steal? The second reason, as the world now knows, is due to the arrogance and investigative ineptitude of the SEC and the press. In addressing his fear for Madoff, why wouldn't he fear Madoff? People have killed for much less. There are pending investigations with the FBI undisclosed to the public. Why would the FBI announce to the bad guys that they're about to be investigated, unlike the SEC, who called Madoff to give him a heads up on the 2006 investigation.Third, a major media outlet criticized how Harry had made a career of being "a professional whistleblower facilitator," turning corporate employees into spies when they should be reporting problems internally. After the collapse of Enron, the SEC was charged with reviewing incidents of financial statement fraud from 1997 to 2002. Of the 515 enforcement actions for financial reporting and disclosure fraud, charges were brought against 466 managers: 75 chairmen of the board, 111 CEOs, 111 presidents, 105 CFOs, 21 COOs, 16 CAOs, and 27 VPs of finance. You tell me how a lonely staff member at the bottom of the totem pole would come up against these big honchos.Throughout the book, if I was not cracking up laughing at Harry's oddball sense of humor, I was pounding my fist from mortification at the horrors that Harry and his team had witnessed the past 10 years. "No One Would Listen" is a reflection of the culture of greed infected on Wall Street. One event that stuck to my mind was Neil Chelo's phone interview with the head of risk management at Fairfield Greenwich Sentry Fund in Chapter 7. I was completely appalled that he could not answer any of Neil's questions on how Madoff was getting his returns, why he was always holding T-bills at year end, and why the audits only show $160MM worth of T-bills on a $1.47BB portfolio. Where did the remaining $1.31BB go? This is the same egghead that manages the risk of a $7BB fund. It was absurd how he had the gall to follow up with Neil if he still wanted to invest with the fund even after Neil had called him out for an hour straight.Another event that had me almost vomiting was regarding 20 market-timing scandals that Harry had worked on for 1.5 years and eventually presented to the SEC. The scandals cost investors $20BB, yet the SEC decided that they were done with market timing scandals so the crooks all walked away scotch-free. Keep in mind that this all happened after Peter Scannell already testified against the SEC on how the agency missed the market timing scandal at Putnam Investments even with his repeated warnings. Our tax dollars at work. And we wonder why our country is in the midst of economic meltdown today. As Frank Casey pointed out, Mother Teresa did not work on Wall Street. Even so, the book details the sacrifices that Harry and his team went through to expose the evil man that is Bernie Madoff, even if it means losing money to a competitor or risk getting shot in the head. These four men are the rare gems in the financial industry. If more people like them exist, perhaps Wall Street would not be such a bad place.Toward the end, Harry revealed the nature of some of the cases he has been working on the past few years and recommendations on how the SEC could improve. He is truly blessed - a self-taught fraud investigator accomplishing more for our country in five years than the entire SEC staff has done in decades. And for that, we owe him our gratitude.Go get 'em, Harry.

It blew my mind when I read just how many times Markopolos tried to contact the SEC and the media, and so many times, he was ignored. To think of the money and the lives that could have been saved! When I wasn't baffled and educated by the contents of the book, I was laughing. Markopolos has managed to write a TRUE thriller with charm and humor. It comforts me to know that this book is out there, for all to read, and I hope it brings a lot of change to our financial watchdogs. Harry Markopolos is a hero.

72 of 75 people found the following review helpful. Well Written Account of Harry's Efforts By J. Lyon Excellent account of the efforts of Harry Markopolos and his team in uncovering Bernie Madoff's fraud and then trying to expose him and get the government to act. The book is well written and documents the the abysmal failures of an SEC relying too heavily on lawyers and accountants who lack the sophistication to understand how the investment industry works and the investment solutions the industry markets to investors.Harry's account of when Noelle Frangipane, a member of the SEC's Inspector General's team investigating the SEC's failings, broke down and cried was indeed a particularly human moment and an account I'm glad Harry put in the book. There are people at the SEC who care. The agency clearly lacks investment professionals and people with investment industry operational experience. Lawyers and accountants have their role, but they are not trained as investment professionals.Great read! Good job Harry!

Even as the world has struggled to deal with ever-more-threatening environmental problems, Green parties around the world have made great political strides in the past four decades. Green parties have been elected to parliaments and local governments, and a common set of Green priorities has begun to play a major role at all levels of political decision making.   This book traces that rise and explores questions vital to the future of Green politics on the international stage. Drawing on the experience of Green parties worldwide, Per Gahrton tells the story of the expansion and development of the movement and addresses crucial questions of what may happen as Green parties become more accustomed to wielding power. It will be essential reading for Green and progressive activists around the globe, as well as for anyone interested in environmental issues.

Green Parties, Green Future: From Local Groups to the International Stage, by Per Gahrton

Review “Per Gahrton’s experience as a parliamentarian, organizer, and activist combines with his skills as a journalist and sociologist to tell an admirably coherent and wonderfully readable story about Green parties and their politics worldwide. Much really helpful learning for those inside or outside the movement, about not only the past, but also what needs to happen next.” (Sara Parkin, founder and director, Forum for the Future and author of The Positive Deviant: Sustainability Leadership in a Perverse World)“Per Gahrton’s book is a must-read for all Green Party politicians and activists all over the world. Not only does it detail all the long walk to a greener future but also drives us back into the past and helps us avoid similar political errors. It’s very motivating for young Green politicians, since it proves that Greens can indeed make a political difference and can be the real alternative needed by our countries.” (Frank Habineza, founding president of the Democratic Green Party of Rwanda and president of the African Greens Federation)“Green Parties, Green Future by Per Gahrton is an important and outstanding contribution to the debate on the origins, the philosophy, and the global spread of Green parties. This worldwide overview and comparative consideration of Green party action and Green thinking fills a gap in contemporary political history. With his long experience and deep insights in Green politics and the Greens’ everyday reality all over Europe and the world, combined with his ability to take the perspective of intellectual distance and objective criticism, Per Gahrton—like no one else can—provides a comprehensive picture of the global Green party family across time and space.” (Claudia Roth, German Green Party MP and vice president, German Bundestag)“Based on his extensive practical experience as a leading green activist over many decades, Per Gahrton provides a fascinating overview of key debates and developments, with unique insights into the internal life of Green parties in Europe and across the world.” (Wolfgang Rüdig, University of Strathclyde)

About the Author Per Gahrton is a Swedish sociologist and politician. He is the author of Georgia: Pawn in the New Political Game, also published by Pluto Press.

Key out of Time, by Andre Alice Norton

Review Again, Andre Norton, one of the greats among writers of teen -age science fiction (Galactic Derelict, 1959, p.658, J-316, for one), has employed his boundless imagination to create a story about two Time Agents who are catapulted back 10,000 years in time, on the deserted planet, Hawaika. The eerie adventures of Ross Murdock among three unique prehistoric races end in a horrifying, but fascinating other world battle. The appearance of the Baldies, hairless creatures who claim power by reading men's minds, constitutes an unusual threat to the agents. Owing to the author's exceptional mastery of detail, and astute control of plot, Key Out of Time stands as a novel which should more than satisfy young science fiction fanciers and fanatics. (Kirkus Reviews)

About the Author For well over a half century, Andre Norton was one of the most popular science fiction and fantasy authors in the world. Since her first SF novels were published in the 1940s, her tales of action and adventure throughout the galaxy have drawn countless readers to science fiction. Her fantasy, including the best-selling Witch World series, has been popular with readers for decades. Andre Norton was the first woman to receive the Gandalf Grand Master of Fantasy Award, presented by the World Science Fiction Society in 1977 and the first woman to be named a Grand Master by the Science Fiction Writers of America in 1983.

Last of the Original TIme Trader Books By Sires Ashe Gordon and Ross Murdock, angry following the loss of their fellow agent and friend, Travis Fox on the planet Topaz, are on the planet Hawaikan, a warm planet that is mostly ocean, intent on setting up a time gate. The world is so different from what they expected after viewing the information from the alien ship that brought them to the planet, that they have decided to do a risky experiment and travel into the past of the planet. They are joined on this venture by two mutant dolphins and a female agent of Polynesian descent. However, just as they set up the time gate, a storm blows up and disaster strikes. Murdock is flung through the gate and into the planet's past. The time gate is destroyed. Murdock is left to try to cope with the different and aline world he finds himself in, where it seems there is currently a three way struggle going on even without the presence of the mysterious aliens who have dogged the Time Traders from the start.Without many references to the Russian/US race to colonize space, this book is not much dated at all. Murdock's resentment about the interjection of a woman into their crew is all too believable. However, Norton rarely takes the expected route and the story remains thoroughly entertaining.

This is the race between the U.S. and USSR to utilize technology left in the distant past on Earth by an interstellar race. The setting is on another planet and goes back into time on it and the travelers meet the race that originated the time technology. Throw in a coven of real witches, dolphins that can communicate with humans and you have one heck of a good story

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. A very fine addition to the Time Traders series By Fantasyman This is a classic example of how Andre Norton crafts a story. Take some interesting characters, give them an important mission with the clock ticking to rush them along, and then let them loose on some alien world without them having the proper preparation, due to that ticking clock, and let them fend for themselves in dangerous situations. Ok, so the plot elements are essentially the same as the previous book in this series, The Defiant Agents. It's a series, that's why the plot elements are so much alike. Andre Norton fans understand that when they read one of her books they are in for a well told tale. She shares that same ability that Edgar Rice Burroughs possessed; the ability to return again and again to familiar plot elements, usually with different characters on different worlds, but essentially the same formula, and then tell a great story. Serious fantasy, sci-fi, or adventure aficionados recognize that the story is the most important thing, tell a good story and readers will willing accept the rehashing of familiar plot development schemes, time and time again. I never get tired of reading this sort of stuff. It usually takes a chapter or two to get the plot rolling, but, once Ms. Norton has laid out the ground work for her story, the story takes off and the reader just keeps turning the page. You want to know what happens next, and you want to know how the story is going to end. Very few writers have ever had the good fortune to maintain the loyalty of their readers to the extent Ms. Norton did in her lifetime, and beyond.

Not a Beginners book By Silicon Valley Its a good book for people who have no idea what weekly options are and wonder what is the tech-speak, but poorly illustrated and glosses over details of trades, I don't think a beginner would be able to understand trading like this. Its basically a diary of trades the authors have made in years past using the TTM_Carter squeeze (not available on some platforms) on a 15 minute chart with candlesticks (Heikin-Ashi) (not available on some platforms) which has about a 50-50 success rate unless highly filtered. I don't think a beginner would have any idea what is happening due to the poor illustrations and more advanced technique used in this book. Also, no information on how to make the set-ups mentioned in the book( other than to load Bollinger Bands and Keltner Channels in the same pane and add Momentum in another), (not even an appendix to search). I love that it can be downloaded using Kindle app onto an Android device.

I found out where I can find a list of the weekly options offered, now know that weekly options are listed on Thursday, and that there is one week a month that a weekly option cannot be traded! There is information on what strategies can be used to trade, advantages and disadvantages of weekly trades. Lots of graphs, which I love, and a free trading toolkit download! All in all, I highly recommend this one!

American business is dysfunctional. Companies of all sizes follow the mistaken belief that their products and services are best sold through organizations with pervasive market reach. Far too many business leaders fail to realize - until it is too late - that the relentless pursuit of volume at all cost is not the key to long-term profits and success. In 2010, Andrew R. Thomas and Timothy J. Wilkinson released THE DISTRIBUTION TRAP: KEEPING YOUR INNOVATIONS FROM BECOMING COMMODITIES, which won the Berry-American Marketing Association Prize for the best marketing book of the year. Based on an article in the WALL STREET JOURNAL, the authors contended that cracking the Big Box channel is not necessarily the Holy Grail that many marketers assume it is. Now they take their original idea to the next level. Thomas and Wilkinson argue that all companies, regardless of the industry there are in, should maintain control over their sales and distribution channels. Volume forgone by avoiding the mass market is more than offset by higher margins and stronger brand equity. The authors show how many firms, such as STIHL Inc., etailz, Apple, Red Ant Pants, and Columbia Paints & Coatings, have prospered by avoiding the Customer Trap, and they explain how your company can have similar success. The alternative is frightening. As THE CUSTOMER TRAP: HOW TO AVOID THE BIGGEST MISTAKE IN BUSINESS shows, giving power to a "customer" that violates "The 10% Rule" sets a company up for ruin. When presented with the option to push more sales through large customers, most decision-makers jump at the chance. As a result, marketing has come to resemble a relentless quest for efficiency and scale. Demands from Mega-Customers in the form of discounts, deals, and incentives erode the integrity of the brand and what it originally stood for. Lower margins become the norm and cost-saving compromises on quality take over. In time, the brand suffers and, in some cases, fails outright. Stark examples from Oreck Vacuum Cleaners, Rubbermaid, Goodyear, Levi's and others are used to illustrate the results of falling into the Customer Trap. And, yet, relenting to a Mega-Customer is not a fait accompli. This book demonstrates in vivid detail how to thrive outside of the convention that "bigger is better". Ultimately, Thomas and Wilkinson argue that avoiding the Customer Trap is the best way to build a real, sustainable enterprise today and for the future. With all the discussions about the decline of American ingenuity, scarcity of resources, global competition, uncertainty about the economic future, and doubts about the role of government, controlling sales and distribution is the cornerstone of business success, as it always has been.

By Richard Seif "The Customer Trap" both describes and prescribes value creation for both entrepreneur and "intrepreneur" product innovators. With the increasing imbalance of global distribution power, the battle of commoditization and profitability rages between producer and Mega Distributor. Andrew Thomas and Timothy Wilkinson allow you to discover the pathway to protect customer value and brand equity through the control of sales and distribution before the channel controls you.--A very enlightening read!

I've historically shunned the "How to succeed in business..." books available on the market but was delighted at the in-depth, reasoned, and experienced approach given to their research.Having fallen prey to this "Customer Trap" before, I certainly saw a bit of my own experience within the many stories which well-articulate the pit-falls of sheer focus on size/scale offered by Mega customers.Several times while reading this I had a "yeah but" moment and almost without fail they covered that thought in a further chapter! I was especially pleased not only with the cautionary tales but with several key suggestions and reminders in the latter chapters. Finally, the focus on 'typologies' of customers was an excellent refresher on maintaining what's important within your own business environment whilst focusing on what the differentiators are with your own organization.Really enjoyed this - anyone who watches "Shark Tank" and agrees with the 'contestants' that getting into a big box will solve all their problems will be interested to read why that's not the case!

Lucarelli Every supplier’s dream is to have innovative products, the ability to focus on their core competencies, and to sell a lot of products to the Mega customers (i.e., Wal-Mart, Home Depot, Target, etc.). What follows is success and wealth, right? ... WRONG! ... “The Customer Trap” is an excellent book which takes the reader through the pitfalls of dealing with Mega customers and how that path has led to many business failures, outsourcing, lower quality, and the loss of innovation. How do you deal with Mega customers as they demand lower prices every year? What do you do when they pit your product against your competitors, with a lower price?“The Customer Trap” also shows how to effectively and efficiently market and sell your product in the environment of the Mega customers. The book is packed full of examples of both successes and failures.Be prepared for an amazing journey because “The Customer Trap” is counter-intuitive to most of what you believe you know. When you finish the book, you’ll be happy to have a blueprint on how to navigate through this dynamic economy.“The Customer Trap” is a must-read for everyone. I highly recommend you get a copy today. You can thank me later.

I read a lot of motivational and "self help" books and was planning to skim this one, but found myself carefully reading every page. Though there are some pointers in here that I've seen before, Mani has a way of phrasing things that really got me thinking. His points about discipline and the need to plan out individual steps that create small successes as pathways to to larger successes really resonated with me. I've been applying what he says about discipline for several days and--so far so good. My copy has lots of dog ears where I'm going to go back and re-read key points and I ordered a separate copy for my daughter who I think would benefit from the structures Mani lays out.

Easy to read and follow By kavitha I am new to personal development, and found this book very helpful, not only to attract money, but to enhance many aspects of my life.I have got so many gems from this book. Some examples include,“Take responsibility for how you feel and choose to be happy.”“Go out of you way to help someone. Make it a weekly or monthly project. By the time you have solved other person’s problem, you will have the insight to solve your own.”“No one is perfect. Accept your mistakes and move forward.I am in the process of forming mastermind alliance with my husband and my coworkers and surround myself with positive people to attract success!

Now that is possible through his book, where you can get the maximum wisdom in the least amount of reading ( and of course adopting it). Mani has successful condensed his philosophy into a concise, clear, and readable book in just 146 pages. I liked the chapters on belief, attitude, clarity, discipline and habits, a great help to anyone who truly wants to move on to the next level in life.

Virus as Populations: Composition, Complexity, Dynamics, and Biological Implications explains fundamental concepts that arise from regarding viruses as complex populations when replicating in infected hosts. Fundamental phenomena in virus behavior, such as adaptation to changing environments, capacity to produce disease, probability to be transmitted or response to treatment, depend on virus population numbers and in the variations of such population numbers. Concepts such as quasispecies dynamics, mutations rates, viral fitness, the effect of bottleneck events, population numbers in virus transmission and disease emergence, new antiviral strategies such as lethal mutagenesis, and extensions of population heterogeneity to nonviral systems are included. These main concepts of the book are framed in recent observations on general virus diversity derived from metagenomic studies, and current views on the origin of viruses and the role of viruses in the evolution of the biosphere.

  • Features current views on the key steps in the origin of life and origins of viruses
  • Includes examples relating ancestral features of viruses with their current adaptive capacity
  • Explains complex phenomena in an organized and coherent fashion that is easy to comprehend and enjoyable to read
  • Considers quasispecies as a framework to understand virus adaptability and disease processes

Top-down synthesis of the population genetics of viruses: a book I've been looking for By Mike F On first impression, I think this is an excellent and necessary book. The author lays out a clear picture of virology as population genetics, and in doing so, he places into a coherent theoretical framework much of the modern understanding of how molecular variation, competition, and selection within a single replicating population determines phenotype. The top-down perspective is a nice contrast to books that are more focused on dissecting microbiological details. The many and well-cited facts from many model viruses fit together to either clarify what is known or highlight what is not yet understood. The highlight for me is Chapter 5, "Viral Fitness as a Measure of Adaptation", which focuses on the idea of fitness: how there are different concepts of fitness that operate in different ways in different host systems and that the concept of fitness one measures needs to carefully matched to the concept of fitness one wants to understand. My only complaint is it needs more equations. The clear writing about concepts such as effective population size, selection coefficients, error catastrophe, and quasispecies is very welcome, but these ideas are most precisely expressed in mathematics. If the well-written words were accompanied by some tightly demonstrated math, the book would be even more edifying. Second edition?

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. A wonderful Book! By 2 boyz mom I read this book to my 8 1/2 year old son and he could hardly stand it when we ended the chapter at night, begging me to read to him the next night. We both loved it. The vernacular lent a perfect discussion to the meaning of words and expressions and how our language has changed. Others have referenced the character "Eradicate" who is a "Darky" as being a negative. I found it just the opposite with a wonderful teaching platform as to how our world has changed. My son understands that Blacks weren't always viewed with respect and he's thankful that has changed. He also loved thinking that his grandfather who died before he was born also read these books. I highly recommend it for some good old fashioned fun. Editor reccommends 4-8 years old. I'd say 8-16 years.

10 of 11 people found the following review helpful. A rousing adventure & story of a young man helping his Dad By L. W. Wilson The first in the series of Tom Swift books. Young Tom shows his bravery in outwitting the bad guys, love for his father in putting himself in peril to save his Dad's invention, and compassion and lack of prejudice by helping others in need. Excellent kids book, unless the reader is sensitive to how Blacks were portrayed in the early 1900's. Subsequent Tom Swift books were much more sensitive to the portrayal of old "Eradicate". I highly recommend this book and all of the Tom Swift books written up through the early 1970's.

It captures life in rural New York state during the 1910's. The story is simple and fast paced, and contrary to popular opinion, it does not contain "tom swifties" (bad puns). In fact, it is quite well written. Also, it is not marred by the supposed antisemitism that crept into later volumes. Anyway, the later volumes that depict Jewish gangsters are no more antisemetic than The Godfather is anti-Italian. The character of "Rad" has been criticised as being racist, but, in spite of his Uncle Remus/Mark Twain type dialogue, "Rad" is loyal, hardworking, and clearly one of the good guys. In fact, he provides Tom with an important clue, without which Tom would not have been able to solve the problem. One weakness is that Tom, who is clearly middleclass, is suspicious of those with less money - but he also does not trust the wealthy and powerful. The basic theme of the story could be summarized in the letters PMA - Positive Mental Attitude. While positive thinking does not always "work" in the story, it certainly does not hurt! Tom may get discouraged, but he refuses to give up hope. This is a good lesson for all ages.

“I’m pretty sure that none of this would of have happened if I was not fired from Apple. It was awful tasting medicine but I guess the patient needed it.
