Virus as Populations: Composition, Complexity, Dynamics, and Biological Implications explains fundamental concepts that arise from regarding viruses as complex populations when replicating in infected hosts. Fundamental phenomena in virus behavior, such as adaptation to changing environments, capacity to produce disease, probability to be transmitted or response to treatment, depend on virus population numbers and in the variations of such population numbers. Concepts such as quasispecies dynamics, mutations rates, viral fitness, the effect of bottleneck events, population numbers in virus transmission and disease emergence, new antiviral strategies such as lethal mutagenesis, and extensions of population heterogeneity to nonviral systems are included. These main concepts of the book are framed in recent observations on general virus diversity derived from metagenomic studies, and current views on the origin of viruses and the role of viruses in the evolution of the biosphere.
- Features current views on the key steps in the origin of life and origins of viruses
- Includes examples relating ancestral features of viruses with their current adaptive capacity
- Explains complex phenomena in an organized and coherent fashion that is easy to comprehend and enjoyable to read

About the Author Esteban Domingo studied chemistry and biochemistry at the University of Barcelona, Spain and spent postdoctoral stays at the University of California, Irvine and the University of Zürich. His main interests are the quasispecies structure of RNA viruses and the development of new antiviral strategies. He is presently Professor of Research of the Spanish Research Council (CSIC) at Centro de Biología Molecular "Servero Ochoa" in Madrid.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Top-down synthesis of the population genetics of viruses: a book I've been looking for By Mike F On first impression, I think this is an excellent and necessary book. The author lays out a clear picture of virology as population genetics, and in doing so, he places into a coherent theoretical framework much of the modern understanding of how molecular variation, competition, and selection within a single replicating population determines phenotype. The top-down perspective is a nice contrast to books that are more focused on dissecting microbiological details. The many and well-cited facts from many model viruses fit together to either clarify what is known or highlight what is not yet understood. The highlight for me is Chapter 5, "Viral Fitness as a Measure of Adaptation", which focuses on the idea of fitness: how there are different concepts of fitness that operate in different ways in different host systems and that the concept of fitness one measures needs to carefully matched to the concept of fitness one wants to understand. My only complaint is it needs more equations. The clear writing about concepts such as effective population size, selection coefficients, error catastrophe, and quasispecies is very welcome, but these ideas are most precisely expressed in mathematics. If the well-written words were accompanied by some tightly demonstrated math, the book would be even more edifying. Second edition?
