The Planet Strappers started out as The Bunch, a group of student-astronauts in the back room of a store in Jarviston, Minnesota. They wanted off Earth, and they begged, borrowed and built what they needed to make it. They got what they wanted--a start on the road to the stars--but no one brought up on Earth could have imagined what was waiting for them Out There!

Space As The Wild West By Crusty Critic Originally published in 1961, and therefore having the flat characters of that era's SF, still this book is full of interesting ideas and events, and even breaks the gender gap with some real female characters, instead of standard, adoring love interests. In the near future, Earth is crowded and tense, while space is not, and so governments, the UN, corporations, entrepreneurs, and criminals flood out into the solar system, just as they did in the US when it opened up to Europeans. A group of "nerds," including a woman, build their own space gear (except for suits, which they must buy) and get lifted into orbit where they inflate their plastic space ships, called "bubbles" for obvious reasons, one of a number of the fascinating ideas, and something I have never seen elsewhere in SF. They separate and have various adventures in some well-realized frontier cultures, such as in the asteroid belt. I got it because it was free and I was curious after reading about Raymond Gallun. Too bad he didn't publish more.

REI space camping meets atomic rockets meets lunar prospecting meets wild west asteroids all played out against a backdrop of sentient plants, violent criminal gangs and a lost civilization from a destroyed planet known only through artifacts like necklaces, space suits and unprocessed rolls of film. It's fun to read, because the setting is fun with good stock characters and great worlds to explore.(Intriguingly, for all its bravado, there is a dark note, a poignancy that grows as the story progresses. There is optimism, but with a limited focus. As I said, there's a lot to read here. It's a really great bad book.)
