The Power of DRIPs in 2016: Compounding Power of Smart Dividend Investing
Here's a book for individual investors, by an individual investor. I've made every mistake there is when it comes to money and investing but I didn’t give up. Along the way, I kept hearing about DRIPs (and DSPPs), and I thought that they were some outmoded investment models that went away after the discount brokers gave all of us retail investors a lot more trading choices and features. NOPE. What I found instead was that DRIPs -- or dividend reinvestment plans -- solved three very serious problems for me! One is that my investing became completely automated. My regular checking account ACH withdrawals meant we'd always make regular monthly investments, and at prices that would dollar-cost-average over the course of the year. Along with the lower fees across the board, this type of income investment also helped me keep from overtrading, saving me all sorts of extra transaction fees. Plus the power of reinvested dividends means compounded growth that we can use for income later when we need it. Join me as we explore how individual investors in 2015 can still take advantage of the power of Investing in DRIPs to access the best blue chip companies -- here and around the world -- and get regular dividend payments from a personal portfolio of growth and income stocks. And the best part is that for me, it's part of an overall investment diversification plan that still includes my 401k, my Roth IRA, and a trading account for my stocks, options, and occasional commodity futures. DRIPs now equal compounded dividend income later! I was tired of losing money by playing the stock market so decided to become a shareholder of some great stable, profitable companies. I came across DRIPs through Temper of the Times/MoneyPaper. I have taught my 10-year-old son about them and purchased 5 well-known stocks in his name representing 5 sectors to teach him about investing in a conservative way through dollar cost averaging and being a shareholder of great companies. For example, my son is a shareholder of a company that has paid dividends for 57 straight years and makes $10 monthly purchases... I have also built a portfolio of 18 stocks in all 10 major sectors for my wife and I in a short time through Temper of the Times for those that only offer DRIPs if you own one share. Others were bought directly through transfer agents by signing up for automatic ACH withdrawals (yes you can own shares of major companies for just $10, $25 or $50 a month with no purchase or dividend reinvestment fees and no brokerage fees! I find it to be a very "relaxing" way to invest in the stock market. I even recently voted as a shareholder. I research extensively before purchasing because I plan to buy and hold...then live off some of the dividends in retirement. This book has helped me in my journey and reinforced that I am doing the right thing! Highly recommend it.

No fancy financial theories, just basic math to explain compounding and other benefits of DRIP investing. This is a great book for those just getting started or considering DRIP investing. I would like to have had more information, including examples of potential pit falls, recommended sectors to look at for first time investors, information on no fee or no load DRIP's. These topics would have made the book more complete. I hope the author will consider writing more in the future. There is a lot to be gained from understanding and applying investment principles based on others personal experience both good and bad.

The book is well written and short enough to finish within an hour, but provides enough information to get started researching your first stock. DRIPs are an excellent way to build wealth and provide income in retirement. Highly recommend.
