In 1950, photographer Gisèle Freund embarked on a two-week trip to Mexico, but she wouldn’t leave until two years later. There she met the legendary couple Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera. Welcomed into their home, she immersed herself in their private lives and the cultural and artistic diversity of the country, taking hundreds of photographs. These powerful photographs, among the last taken before Kahlo’s death, bear poignant witness to Frida’s beauty and talent. Showcasing more than 100 of these rare images, many of which have never been published before, the book also includes previously unpublished commentary by Gisèle Freund about Frida Kahlo, texts by Kahlo’s biographer Gérard de Cortanze and art historian Lorraine Audric, as well as a link to a previously unreleased color film, shot by Freund, showing Diego Rivera at work.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Not enough variety of Frida photos! Too many different views of the same thing! Too much Diego Rivera! By TW I am a Frida Kahlo fan and I purchased this book because 88% of the reviews were 5 stars. A 1 star reviewer said not to buy it because of the many photos of Diego Rivera! This did not deter me, but now I believe I should have listened. The book should have been titled "Diego Rivera". Plus there are so many photos that are just different views of essentially the same thing. To me these are just duplicates. There should not be so much repetition in any book let alone one with a mere 160 pages! The photos of Frida look like they were all taken the same day, two days tops! There is much more variety within the photos of Diego but I was not buying a book about him! I have not seen any other photography books on Frida Kahlo so maybe this is the best there is? Hence all the 5 stars?
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A friend's view By Walker K. The book is an intimate glimpse into the "blue house" home/studio of Kahlo and Rivera in Mexico City. Well presented with occasional contact sheets, Gisele Freund's black and white compositions are beautiful, interesting and arresting.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Picture book of the life and works of Frida Kahlo By SOS I bought this for my wife and she absolutely loved it! This is not a biography. It is a picture book of Fridas life, paintings, and photo history. Great coffee table book.
