12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. An Outstanding Book By Robert K. Jones I first ran across this book back in the 60's. It is about a lost colony from Earth that has established relations with an amphibian type race on a distant planet that also is home to a mythical, cruel and warlike race called the Others. The colonist are escapees from an earth that tried to suppress all scientific developement and traveled to the stars in suspended animation.The planet is again visited by a FTL ship from Earth after the old government is overthrown and a new point of view has taken hold. Question is, the new viewpoint any better then the old one in certain aspects especially when meeting a society that is totally different then what they are use to and alien races.The book is well thought out and is an engrossing read. It is just as good now as it was when I first read it. I highly recommend it to old SciFi fans as well as new ones. It has something for all of us.

Seeing it available quite inexpensively on Amazon, I purchased it, and enjoying reading it again, and will encourage our children and grand children to check it out.

Classic SF Ethical Study By Amazon Customer Dilemma: when making fresh contact with a world visited long-ago by humanity and there are three different races, whose side do you choose?Norton sets the stage by following separate teams of explorers. Of one, the human half has mental powers that his ancestral settlers never had. And the native half- visualize a merman.The third race conducts raids from their lair across an ocean. They have much ancient technology, but abuse the others. But this is where a modern starship lands and begins negotiations.Raf, a low ranking member of the starship crew, has ethical reservations which separate him from his fellows. You will want to follow them as events accelerate to climax.
