About the Author
Laurie K. Baedke, MHA, FACHE, FACMPE, is an executive and entrepreneur with broad experience building companies and leading organizational change. In her role as chief brand officer of Core Bank in Omaha, Nebraska, she provides leadership to the organization s brand strategy, culture development, and healthcare banking teams. A non-traditional career path has taken her from healthcare leadership and consulting, and now into banking. But one constant remains, a deep passion for developing leaders, high performing teams, and outstanding organizational cultures. Laurie was a hospital VP at age 22, and founded a successful physician practice management consultancy three years later. She is an active mentor and advisor to emerging leaders and entrepreneurs, start-up companies, and businesses; a frequent speaker at national conferences; and a facilitator at association and company retreats.
Natalie D. Lamberton, MBA/MHA, FACHE, is the chief executive officer of Regency Hospital of Fort Worth, Texas. Her career in healthcare leadership has been extensive. Previously, she served as the director of neurosciences at the Medical Center of Aurora; as Administrator in Presbyterian Health System, where she oversaw a $190 million construction project for a new hospital; as CEO of the Haxtun Hospital District, which comprised a hospital, an extended care unit, and three primary care clinics servicing communities within a 300-square-mile radius; and as the director of retail services of the Poudre Valley Health System, where she designed, developed, and implemented the corporate strategic plan for the division. In addition, she was the first postgraduate administrative fellow for the Poudre Valley Health System. Natalie continues to actively mentor students and early careerists and enjoys speaking to graduate programs about management and leadership.

Besides being well-written, the book is conversational in tone and the format of the chapters makes it enjoyable and practical: each chapter has "Reading Points" and "Remember These" sections bringing out the most important points for quick reference or review. As I begin my healthcare career, I can see myself truly using this book as a field guide. One of my favorite parts of the book is the "Rookie Mistakes." In spite of their noteworthy early successes, the authors reveal their vulnerability to mistakes made as they began their careers. These stories lend credibility to the authors' emphasis on integrity and authenticity by letting the reader know that although mistakes reveal our frailty, they do not have to define our careers. As a student, there are only a few books that truly stand out as must-have resources. This book answers questions about what to become while preparing for a healthcare career as well as what to do to open doors of opportunity to be hired. It is definitely practical, easy to read, and packed with information about what to do next.

I am currently in the stage of applying for administrative fellowships and this guide has been so helpful to make sure I am at the top of my game. Thank you Laurie and Natalie for seeing the need to help early careerists succeed! It is nice to have practical real world tips and experiences aimed at those early in our careers. A lot of leadership books focus on those higher up in their careers, but this is the resource you need to help develop you into the leader you want to become. I would recommend this resource for all MHA’s working on their professional development to help build upon their inherent strengths for a successful future in healthcare.

My favorite part is just how real and authentic both Laurie and Natalie are. We are allowed to peek into their lives for just a bit of time and to see where they were just a few years back and continue to excel now. A lot of people make it sound like the road to success is impossible, but they are honest about mistakes and lessons learned. I have spent more time in the past few weeks trying to become more self-aware and learn who I am and this has helped. I love the practical advice, especially trying to learn as much as possible by signing up and volunteering for less than glamorous projects and assignments. I have learned so much from following that advice.
