Williams, PMP Every once in awhile, you come across a model or methodology that just seems to make so much sense that you kick yourself for not coming up with it yourself. The Social Process Model is one of those examples. In "Manage Socially," Mr. Saad breaks through traditional hierarchy-based organizational structures and walks the reader through how work really gets done, how ideas get exchanged and how change is communicated within today's socially networked business world. This book will be a real eye opener for leaders, marketing teams and resource managers with respect to how companies organize their work around three key social concepts: impact, process and assumptions. Using the model, organizations can be deliberate about how that work moves through the organization's business processes, encountering these social concepts through inputs, outputs, methods, purposes and contributions. Two things made this book a five-star read...first, its concise! Its a "single serving" read that allows the reader an opportunity to go back numerous times to better understand how the model all comes together. The second, is that the book is loaded with great visuals that make the model quick to understand and easy to recall from memory. A nice find!

WINNER of the W. E. Fischelis Award from the Victorian Society in America.Accompanying a major exhibition, this is the first book devoted to the career of this renowned American painter through his brilliant portraits. John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was one of the leading painters of his generation, whose captivating portraits are universally admired for their insight into character, radiance of light and color, and painterly fluency and immediacy. This unprecedented book showcases Sargent’s cosmopolitan career in a new light—through his bold portraits of artists, writers, actors, and musicians, many of them his close friends—giving us a picture of the artist as an intellectual and connoisseur of the music, art, and literature of his day. Whether depicted in well-appointed interiors or en plein air, the cast of characters includes many famous subjects, among them Claude Monet, Auguste Rodin, Gabriel Fauré, Vaslav Nijinsky, W. B. Yeats, Robert Louis Stevenson, and Henry James. Structured thematically and according to the places Sargent worked and lived—Paris, London, New York, Italy, and the Alps—this book unites informative essays by noted scholars with a wealth of imagery to offer fresh insights into Sargent’s life and work.

Review "Sargent: Portraits of Artists and Friends unites informative essays by noted scholars with a wealth of imagery to offer fresh insights into Sargent’s life and work. The book also includes drawings, early works, a richly illustrated chronology, and new research, making it one of the most comprehensive volumes on this renowned American painter." -Artdaily.org"Sargent: Portraits of Artists and Friends, written by Richard Ormond, one of the foremost authorities on the artist, showcases Sargent’s cosmopolitan career in a new light—through his bold portraits of artists, writers, actors, and musicians, many of them his close friends—giving us a picture of the artist as an intellectual and connoisseur of the music, art, and literature of his day. . . . Accompanying [major exhibitions at the National Portrait Gallery and The Metropolitan Museum of Art], this is the first book devoted to the entire career of this renowned American painter through these brilliant portraits." -ArtFixdaily.com"Think Gilded Age, that glittering era of sophistication and new money at the end of the 19th century. John Singer Sargent painted and lived it. He cultivated commissions from its rich, and became famous for his luscious, flattering, society portraits, which is exactly what critics often held against him. And over time, the go-to portrait painter of his day lost interest in the grand paintings that made his name, preferring people in informal settings, and watercolors regarded as some of the finest ever painted. . . 90 years after his death, in 1925, it is those extraordinary, telling portraits that are treasured all over the world."-CBS NEWS

54 of 54 people found the following review helpful. Laughably terrible image reproductions By Jon This is the first review I have ever written on this site. People are being way to kind about this book. The reproductions are TERRIBLE. I live in NYC, and the show is going on right now at the Metropolitan museum of art. All of the paintings from this book are in the show. The show is so amazing, that i went one day, and woke up the next morning and went back. I will probably go again in a couple of days. At the show they have all of these astonishing paintings hanging, the most Sargent paintings I have seen in one area. Being a crazed Sargent fan, I almost wept. They have this table at the show with 4 of these books there so you can flip through them and read the text associated with the images. I was disgusted! I didn't see a single painting in the book that was well reproduced, or even acceptable. The color management was terrible, they made no effort against glare, the value levels were way off, some of the pictures were remarkably undersaturated or over saturated. For example, Sargen'ts portrait of Edwin Booth looks like they took a picture of it, then put it in photoshop and dropped a yellow/red saturation filter over it. The painting "a gust of wind" which is one of the most beautiful paintings i have ever seen face to face is printed in this book maybe a couple shades darker on the value scale, and its printed REVERSE horizontal. How the hell does that even happen? It's disrespectful. Sargent would have been outraged. I don't think painters collect images for books like this. I almost laughed out loud sitting there in the show surrounded by all of the real paintings flipping through this book. I was taking better photo reproductions with my iPhone 5S. I wish i was kidding. I wish I was just saying that for dramatic effect. If you saw the show, then you know what I am talking about. Don't act like this is okay. I would have bought this book instantly without even looking at a review had i not seen the show first, because i am such a big Sargent fan. But having seen the show, nothing will get me to buy this book. Ill just flip through my iPhone instead. To show you what I'm talking about I included my photo of "Edwin Booth" that i took with my iPhone with no edits or color corrections, as well as an image of the laughably terrible book reproduction of the same painting.Cheers,

12 of 12 people found the following review helpful. It is a wonderful publication which makes a great companion to the show By Kiku Saw the exhibition in London three times in four days. So many works from so many American, British and private collections that will hardly if ever come together again. Regarding the book. It is a wonderful publication which makes a great companion to the show. My only complaint is that some of the pictures in the book do not do justice to the original works. The authors, publishers and anyone who have anything to do with these Singer Sargent publications need to see and make sure that the printers' proofs are as close to the original painitngs as possible. For instance, the Pailleron children, the carpet behind the girl's legs is a mass of darks in the book. In the original painting, there is detail and is much lighter than the one in the book. Ada Rehan's picture in the book is a bit dull compared to the original painting, where the whitness of the dress leaps off the canvas. Again it is a very good book, but i need to stress to the authors that it is not a case of just putting together the pictures to accompany the text. Care needs to be taken when it comes to reproducing paintings, particularly in the catalog raisonne. I can mention another book where for instance "Bridge of sighs, Venice" was printed facing the other way. Someone needs to make sure that the pictures match the original works before going to print. Other than that, get the book if you're a Singer Sargent fan.

A true cosmopolitan & a consummate artist with a flair for friendship By Patto John Singer Sargent, an American born and nurtured in Europe, moved from country to country in a shifting cocoon of friends and family. We follow in his footsteps through these wonderful portraits. His sitters are diplomats, poets, novelists, painters, Spanish and Javanese dancers, theater people, his painting teacher, his sister – people with whom he traveled, visited, corresponded, and made music (he was an accomplished pianist), artists and musicians whose talents he generously promoted.Sargent was particularly gifted at capturing the outer form and inner spark of creative personalities. Some of his sitters are famous, like Henry James and Monet. Others are lesser known today, but it's intriguing to read about their lives and accomplishments and their personal quirks. This book gives us a picture of the highly artistic circles Sargent lived in and his own remarkably cultured character. The text is lively and extremely well written. There are ninety-two catalogued paintings, and the color reproductions are large and lavish. Sargent's luminous style and vibrant brush strokes reproduce beautifully. The individual write-ups about the paintings reveal a lot about the experience of sitting for Sargent. There are fun episodes amusingly recounted. Like the time a hostile poodle kept biting Sargent while he painted the dog's elegant master. Or the time Sargent painted a singer and made him stand on a platform and sing Wagner straight through every sitting. (Sargent was passionately fond of Wagner). The text also analyzes Sargent's methods. We learn which paintings were meticulously planned and which were more spontaneous. We read about the artistic intention behind Sargent's often eccentric placement of figures. The text also informs us about Sargent's artistic influences – the Old Masters he revered and studied, the contemporaries he admired.Intellectual to the end, Sargent died with a volume of Voltaire by his side. The text is rich in fascinating biographical details like this. This book is ideal preparation for the exhibit coming in June 2015 to the Met, which I can't wait to see. But even independent of the exhibit, the book is an absorbing read and a visual delight. It shows us a more personal side of the artist, not just the brilliant society portraitist but the artist in a more experimental mood. Sargent was never so exuberant and free as when painting his friends and fellow artists.

This approach is a new discovery about selling that has never before been codified in a way to allow you can learn and use the information instantly. It really is a water-shed moment signaling a new and exciting way of thinking about selling. The basic idea of the book is simply stated, but extremely powerful, here it is: Professionalism and excellence in selling is based on the MASTERY OF FUNDAMENTALS not the accumulation of more techniques. Also, understanding this idea does not require an overhaul, or require that you reshuffle the deck of what you’re already doing successfully. As a result, confusions and doubts are eliminated, with certainty and confidence taking their place. Align your methods with the basic principles of selling and you’ll never again resort to old, antiquated methods of selling by applying effort and force to persuade and convince the customer, (which doesn’t work anyway). These elements are instead replaced with efficient and effective methods that UNLEASH THE POWER of the NATURAL LAWS and put you back in the drivers seat to turn your dreams into reality, effortlessly! So, why not do it the easy way?

The Natural Laws Of Selling: The Essential Truths, by Daniel Jacobs

About the Author Daniel Jacobs lives in Michigan with his beautiful wife, his harshest critic and strongest advocate, and “Cali” a Black Lab, who is not the least bit shy about demanding to go outside at 5am, and insisting that her adventures in the snow in winter (with temps below zero), and in the lake during summer take precedence over all other boring (human) activities. After discovering, almost by accident, that he could write something that people found interesting, he began to write more and realized that the process was as much fun as the result (perhaps more). He also learned that the process itself of searching out native causes of why things worked (or didn’t work) was itself both challenging and rewarding. Encouragement from others prompted him to put these writings into a website, which, over the years, predictably became unwieldy. This fact as much as any other, forced him to bite the bullet and begin the often arduous and frustrating process of putting his writings into the form of an eBook, such as you now find yourself reading. Now, with this book completed and humbly presented to the world as containing something of value not found elsewhere, the hope is that the reader will find this book “better than it was ever thought to be.”

His actual discovery of the Natural Laws of Selling is extremely valuable and shines a spotlight of truth on how you can use them to genuinely change how you approach sales. The way Dan has written this book makes it so easy to understand it allows you to quickly read and "make-it-your-own" – so that you really get the concepts in a way you can use them.Once you grasp these simple, common sense principles you will find yourself realizing just how you can use them every day. I would recommend this book to not only people who sell for a living, but when you think about it we "sell" ourselves every day of our life, so knowing the basics can help you become more successful in not only situations where you are actually "selling" but in our interpersonal relations on a daily basis.

By Heather G Have you ever met someone that seems to be a ‘natural sales person?’ No matter the environment, no matter the situation – they can make the connection, and make the sale? This person isn’t magic, they just know the natural laws; laws that Daniel Jacobs wants to share with you in “The Natural Laws of Selling: The Essential Truths.”When it comes to selling and life in general, there are a few sets of absolutes you have to accept –and apply in order to succeed. The first and foremost of those laws is something many of us has already heard; you are not in the business of selling, you are in the people business. But what does that really mean? Jacob’s breaks it down for you, stripping away the flowery language and workshop feel; getting down to the heart of the matter with straightforward terms and real life applications. There is no psychobabble in these pages, instead you will find the bases and basics of selling – the Laws that don’t change, and the ways you can start implementing them TODAY.Whether you are a business owner looking to revitalize your sales force or a sales person yourself, this guide is a must read. In truth, it should be a ‘must read’ for everyone, because we are all selling something, from items to ideas, thoughts to presence, we are ALL in the business of people.

A Non-Salesman's Perspective: Much More Than a Book on Selling--A Life Manual By Bob Hartig The reason this book is so spot-on is because it is about much more than just successful selling. It is a road map to good relationships and a positive, productive life.I'm not a professional salesman. While it can be argued that all of us sell something at some time, I haven't pursued selling as a career. So the fact that I, a non-salesperson, continue to sift through these pages and think "Wow!" and "This is great!" speaks volumes. This book makes me think and self-assess. It is affirming some of my instincts and challenging me to develop and project greater confidence in my own areas of expertise. It articulates some very commonsense principles that can free us up to simply be ourselves at our best. Foremost is this: Relationships are forged on trust, and trust rests on an attitude of serving others.Dan projects not only a stance of success but also of delight in life and genuine care about other people. Transfer that to salesmanship and it's easy to see why he's risen to the top of his field: he has transcended gimmicks and gone for the heart. That's not to say he doesn't respect proven techniques or new approaches; rather, it's to say that he points to underlying principles--to natural laws--that should inform and energize all approaches. And while some of this is specific to sales, so much of it applies to life in general, and it is delivered with such clarity and winsome honesty, that it is inviting me to consider how I might develop my own rudimentary abilities in selling the things I have to offer.Bravissimo, Dan! This book is a gift not just to the sales community but also to readers at large who want to strengthen their communication skills, their relationships, and their outlooks on life.

Does the character of our leaders matter? You may think this question was answered long ago. Countless business authors and analysts have assured us that great leadership demands great character. Time and again, we've seen that truth play out, as once-thriving organizations falter and fail under the guidance of leaders behaving badly. Why, then, do so many executives remain skeptical about the true value of leadership character? A winning strategy and a sound business model are what really matter, they argue; character is just the icing on the cake. What's been missing from this debate is hard evidence: data that shows not only that leadership character matters for organizational success, but how it matters; and concrete evidence that it leads to better business results. Now, in this groundbreaking book, respected leadership researcher, adviser, and author Fred Kiel offers that evidence--solid data that demonstrates the connection between character, leadership excellence, and organizational results. After seven years of rigorous research based on a landmark study of more than 100 CEOs and over 8,000 of their employees' observations, Kiel's findings show that leaders of strong character achieved up to five times the ROA for their organizations as did leaders of weak character.Return on Character goes on to reveal:

  • How leadership character is formed, how it creates value, and how that value spreads throughout the organization
  • How low-character leaders undermine the success of even the best business plans
  • How leaders at any level can develop the habits of strong character and "unlearn" the habits of poor character
The book also provides a character-building methodology--step-by-step advice and techniques for assessing your own character habits and improving your performance and that of your organization.Return on Character provides the blueprint for building your own leadership character and creating a character-driven organization that achieves superior business results.

Review 2016 Axiom Business Book Gold Award in LEADERSHIP“A great sales book . . . With thoughtful, clear, and engaging examples, Cespedes provides a framework for diagnosing and managing the core levers for effective selling in any organization.” — Sales Pro Insider“It’s rare to find a business book, let alone one on leadership, that is well researched, well documented, well written, convincing, credible, and imbued with a voice that one grows to both trust and admire” — strategy+business magazine“The book is filled with compelling case studies …. You'll walk away with new ideas for improving employee morale, engaging customers and earning their loyalty, and gaining respect for your organization from your community.” — TD magazine (Association for Talent Development)“In business, nice guys finish first. Yes, really” — Fortune“Every entrepreneur needs to understand the importance of character and leadership is to their growth and success, as well as their ability to attract investors. The return on character in business is well worth the investment.” — Forbes“Does having excellent character contribute positively and sustainably to the bottom line? Unsurprisingly, the answer is in the affirmative but Kiel also presents a wide body of hard evidence for this proposition...The work involved in exploring your own nature and ways to overcome problems can be difficult and painful but is ultimately worth it.” — Irish TimesADVANCE PRAISE for Return on Character:Irvine Hockaday, former President and CEO, Hallmark Cards—“This book breaks new ground. Its central finding: organizations led by a CEO and executive team of high character will, on average, produce a materially higher ROA than other organizations. Readers will find the results convincing and the suggestions for how to attain that kind of leadership quite valuable.”Shane S. Dikolli, Associate Dean for Faculty Engagement, Fuqua School of Business, Duke University—“This book is an extraordinary source of insight about how the personal characteristics of leaders translate into significant economic consequences for the organizations they lead. The examples are concrete, the chapter takeaways are penetrating, and the guidance for becoming a ‘Virtuoso leader’ is essential reading for anyone with leadership aspirations or responsibilities.”Yvonne K. Franzese, Chief Human Resources Officer, Allianz of America— “Fred Kiel's breakthrough research demonstrates that character is a leadership differentiator that resonates with employees and has a positive impact on business results. His findings clearly illustrate that greatness need not be achieved at the expense of virtuosity, and that the self-focused CEO will always be part of our history but does not need to be part of our future.”David Kenny, Chairman and CEO, The Weather Company—“Fred Kiel provides inspiration for both current and future leaders to live and act on their values and to empower their organizations to do the same. A great contribution to the study of leadership.”David G. Bradley, owner and Chairman, Atlantic Media—“Fred Kiel, the global dean of CEO coaches—in the masterpiece of his career—argues two truths gleaned from his practice and scholarship: 1) High personal character in corporate leadership yields far higher ROI and ROA for the company; and 2) Growth in character is a matter of choice and discipline and, as such, available to us all. Thirty years of clinical practice built into a playbook for leaders and their teams.”

About the Author FRED KIEL, PhD, is a founding partner of the leadership development and strategic analytics firm KRW International and a pioneer in the field of executive coaching. For more than thirty years, he has helped Fortune 500 CEOs and senior executives build organizational effectiveness through leadership excellence and mission alignment. Anton, Ph.D. Not since I wrote Business Success Through Self-Knowledge have I read a leadership book that gives equal value to "who the leader is" and "what the leader does". Dr. Kiel is correct in observing that "trust flows from strong character habits", and I would add, these habits flow from self-knowledge. As long as your basic mental models (supported by neurobiology) and fortifying habits remain in force, you will only achieve a more efficient existence, not true freedom. I would add that self-knowledge brings forth "moral intuitions", modulates the expression of the "Big Five", and integrates the slow brain and the fast brain in a way that balances drives. In short, "the truth will set you free." I recommend this data based book highly and have purchased multiple copies for several top executives in the business world.William D. Ant on, Ph.D.

It is a bit like an iceberg, most of its power and mass is hidden from view, yet you soon feel its impact! The author presents the findings of a major study conducted into seeing what makes (or breaks) really top-flight leaders in American companies. It is not the lightest of reads but it is a very informative and fascinating academically rigorous deep-dive. The research has sought to examine the interconnected world of character, leadership excellence and organisational results, taking direct evidence from over one hundred CEOs as well as interviewing nearly 9,000 employees to gauge their own reactions and valuations.Being a strong, confident, considerate leader has its benefits, especially on the company’s bottom line. The good news is that even poorly performing, weaker leaders can transform and transition into a stronger, higher performing character. It is just that they must accept the need and endure a possibly rigorous series of procedures. The author pulls no punches, starting the book with this fairly stern yet valid paragraph: “Just seeing the words character and business leadership in the same sentence brings to mind a seemingly unending list of ineffective leaders who periodically sweep through the business world, draining organisations of all real value, leaving nothing behind but angry investors and an unemployed workforce. These “greed is good” proponents can make for great headlines, but that's where their contribution to any common good ends. When it comes to running a business that achieves maximum returns for all stakeholders - investors, governing boards, employees, clients, communities, and the world they share - self-involved, bottom-line-driven leaders rarely deliver the goods.”This reviewer can identify many so-called top leaders who are in fact rather ineffectual and a corrosive effect on their enterprise. The cream does not always rise to the top… These leaders might be skilled in some things, yet they lack the all-round, credible, quality leadership skills that can really set an enterprise alight with creativity, vitality, profitability and a determined, loyal workforce. This is not a “how to be a great leader in one day”-type of book. It is a detailed, focussed, considerate examination of a very serious subject. It is the sort of book that a weak, ineffective leader probably won’t read, after all they know everything don’t they and they have the title to evidence their success. The rest of us, whether regular workers, aspiring leaders or even true, confident and real company leaders will find a lot of actionable and gripping information. It will be a heavy read but the outcome is worth it.One hopes that the publishers will make a simpler, accessible version of this book in due course, allowing the message be spread to as wide an audience as possible. It might even start to have an impact on those who really do need to change their habits…. One can dream, can’t one?

Albert Einstein By Robert Morris As I began to read this book, I was again reminded of Einstein's observation as well as one of my favorite Warren Buffett insights: "Somebody once said that in looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence, and energy. And if you don't have the first, the other two will kill you. You think about it; it's true. If you hire somebody without [integrity], you really want them to be dumb and lazy."It is no coincidence that most of the companies annually ranked among the most highly admired and best to work for are also among the companies annually ranked as most profitable with the greatest cap value in their competitive marketplace. Some of their leaders may lack charisma but none of their leaders lacks the character and integrity to which Einstein and Buffett refer.Fred Kiel wrote this book because he saw a need to offer "concrete reasons for rethinking our ideas about effective leadership and to map out the direct connection between strong character, principled behavior, and sustainable business results." He would be among the first to agree that leadership without character has a very short duration. Character-driven leadership - at all levels and in all areas, especially in the so-called C-suite - is essential to the "sustainable business results" to which Kiel refers. These are among the dozens of passages of greatest interest and value to me, also listed to suggest the scope of his coverage:o ROC Is for Leaders -- At Any Level (Pages 8-9)o Coming to Terms with Character (15-18)o Profiling the CEO Character, and, Plotting the Character Curve (18-20)o Connecting the Links in the ROC Value Chain (28-32)o Updating to Leadership 2.0 (37-40)o Exploring the Software at the Heart of Human Nature (42-46)o Telling a Coherent Life Story (54-58)o The Keystone Character Traits (63-66)o The Worldview from the Vantage Point of Success (69-73)o Decision Making and Character-Driven Leadership (84-92)o Establishing Strategic Focus, and, Enforcing a Culture of Accountability (92-95)o Leading the Way Toward Maximum ROC (99-102)o Leading the Executive Teamo Building Workforce Engagement (118-122)o Building on the Bedrock of Character (124-125)o The Return on Character for Employees (135-141)o Becoming a Virtuoso Leader: A Six-Step Process (157-189)o Creating an Executive Team with as Shared Sense of Vision and Strategy (195-198)o Looking for World-Class Leaders (212-215)I agree with Kiel that almost anyone can become a Virtuoso leader by completing the process explained in Chapter 7. Long ago, I realized that all character-driven leaders have a "green thumb" for "growing" associates entrusted to their care. That is the key to establishing and then nourishing a workplace culture within which personal growth and professional development are most likely to thrive. Those who aspire to become a Virtuoso leader should be able to rely on the support and encouragement of a character-driven supervisor while completing the aforementioned process. If there is none, they should seriously consider joining another organization.Fred Kiel is to be commended on the abundance of information, insights, counsel, and personal experiences that he shares in this book. He makes brilliant use of several reader-friendly devices, notably an "ROC Takeaways" section at the conclusion of each chapter. This is an especially effective way to review key points and will also facilitate, indeed expedite frequent review of relevant material later.Hopefully, many of those who read this brief commentary will read and then re-read the book. Not everyone who does so will become - or even aspire to become- a C-level executive but all of them will, I hope, make and sustain a heartfelt commitment to character-driven leadership, both at work and everywhere else available to them. Meanwhile, I ask them to keep in mind this observation by Margaret Mead: "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has."

In the past few decades, personality psychology has made considerable progress in raising new questions about human nature—and providing some provocative answers. New scientific research has transformed old ideas about personality based on the theories of Freud, Jung, and the humanistic psychologies of the nineteen sixties, which gave rise to the simplistic categorizations of the Meyer-Briggs Inventory and the 'enneagream'. But the general public still knows little about the new science and what it reveals about who we are. In this book, Brian Little, one of the psychologists who helped re-shape the field, provides the first in-depth exploration of the new personality science and its provocative findings for general readers. The book explores questions that are rooted in the origins of human consciousness but are as commonplace as yesterday’s breakfast conversation. Are our first impressions of other people’s personalities usually fallacious? Are creative individuals essentially maladjusted? Are our personality traits, as William James put it “set like plaster” by the age of thirty? Is a belief that we are in control of our lives an unmitigated good? Do our singular personalities comprise one unified self or a confederacy of selves, and if the latter, which of our mini-me-s do we offer up in marriage or mergers? Are some individuals genetically hard-wired for happiness? Which is the more viable path toward human flourishing, the pursuit of happiness or the happiness of pursuit?Little provides a resource for answering such questions, and a framework through which readers can explore the personal implications of the new science of personality. Questionnaires and interactive assessments throughout the book facilitate self-exploration, and clarify some of the stranger aspects of our own conduct and that of others. Brian Little helps us see ourselves, and other selves, as somewhat less perplexing and definitely more intriguing. This is not a self-help book, but students at Harvard who took the lecture course on which it is based claim that it changed their lives.

Read, laugh, pause, think - Me, Myself, And Us has it all By Jon Jachimowicz Let me preface this review with a cautionary note: I'm a doctoral student in behavioral science, I have read about personality psychology extensively and have interacted with Dr. Little in person a few times.Me, Myself, And Us is a fantastic book. Dr. Little has us laughing, thinking, reflecting, questioning, and at the same time learning learning and learning about ourselves, our friends, our foes, and anyone else we care to put within our personal radar. Throughout the book, the common theme of questioning how people behave, why they behave how they behave, and what we can do about it, is as helpful a guide as any that has ever been written about the subject. My favourite quote of the book, that I have since started using in every day usage, is the idea of "acting out of character", which Dr. Little uses to illustrate one of his key theories. In short, acting out of character has a dual meaning; on the one hand, it describes situations where we act in ways that run contrary to our biological make-up and our sociological/cultural up-bringing; at the same time, acting out of character can also describe situations where we act because of our character, because of what we believe in, and because of things that are important for us. Acting out of character therefore describes situations where introverts act like extroverts, where selfish people act kind, or where social butterflies act more calm. Crucially, we can not act out of character all the time, but need spaces where we can be in-tune with our character again, which Dr. Little calls "restorative niches" to maintain levels of well-being.For anyone interested in the self, whether it's their own or other peoples', I can only wholeheartedly recommend reading Dr. Little's book, which I would call his magnum opus (to date). It's a very accessible, smart, and funny read, that will have you pause at times to reflect and think.

I recently joined the productive readers of the world and have been striving to find wisdom and well-being through opening my eyes to the ideas out there.Admittedly, on a couple occasions I found myself a bit lost. My mind wanders as it does to so many of us. However, many ideas I found here were intriguing and just rang true in my mind. They made sense.Little is a very sharp man than has really refined his thoughts. A few of my favorite ideas of his include the following:1) We have specific self-beliefs and constructs of ourselves and they inevitably affect our well-being. Acknowledging this, Little states that "it is possible to change our personal constructs, and this gives us hope." But with this he includes that " sometimes escaping from them can be difficult."2) High vs Low Self Monitoring3) Seeking to see deeper than the frames people put on at first meeting. In other words, giving others a chance to show their strengths or not being fooled by an impressive manner.4) Hostility and how it affects the Type A's of the world.5) The power of "latent inhibition" and its upsides.6) A few final ideas on well-being:A Few intimate relationshipsClearing the deckThe Sustainable Pursuit of Core ProjectsSelf-Reflection and Reconciling - Dancing with ourselves

Applied Ordinal Logistic Regression Using Stata: From Single-Level to Multilevel Modeling, by Xing Liu

Review In this book, Xing Liu offers a well-crafted book focused on the application of ordinal response models across fields. Readers will be equipped to competently handle a variety of statistical techniques from basic correlations to more advanced generalized ordered logistic regression models. This is an excellent resource for both new consumers of these statistical applications to seasoned veterans working on more complex issues related to ordinal response models.  (Jennifer Hayes Clark) Logistic regression can be difficult to understand. Without a book explaining the test in a plain and easy-to-understand matter, learners will feel lost and get frustrated. However, Applied Ordinal Logistic Regression Using Stata explains the concept clearly and provides practical codes and output.  Learners will find this book approachable and easy to follow.  (Lu Liu)

“You got to lose to know how to win.” – Dream On, Aerosmith

These are apt words and advice for anyone wishing to try their hand at trading in the markets.  It has long been accepted that successful people learn from the achievements and losses of others, while those who fail, spend far too much time recovering from their own mistakes.  In Once Upon a Trade you are introduced to a proven strategy of success, developed over 15 years by a trader in the trenches of modern-day financial warfare.

“Formal education will make you a living; self-education will make you a fortune.” – Jim Rohn

Rainier Trinidad is a veteran of the markets, having traded over a billion dollars in equities over 10 years as a co-manager for a hedge fund that was profitable during the 2008 Financial Crisis and outperformed the S&P 500. He previously managed $100 million in investments at Wells Fargo and also earned the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation. He is now the President and portfolio manager of Parabolic Asset Management LLC, a Registered Investment Advisor. He is uniquely suited to instruct novice, and experienced traders, alike, how to navigate today’s volatile markets.

Over the span of his career, Rainier has tested the waters of various trading techniques: some were successful, while others were not, but he learned and adapted.  That active education, which cost tens of thousands of dollars, has culminated in the winning strategy contained in this direct guide to trading stocks.  It is a straightforward, easy-to-understand approach to developing your own action plan.

Topics Include:

  • Why you shouldn’t fight the trend
  • How stock charts signal upcoming developments
  • Where some of the biggest losses happen
  • Where some of the biggest gains happen
  • How to take advantage of an earnings surprise
  • When to buy low
  • The fair value of a stock
  • Your biggest enemy when it comes to trading
  • When to let a winner run, and when to cut a loss quickly
  • When to short a stock
  • How to reach your goals faster
  • The importance of bet size
  • The most important lesson of all
  • This guide is applicable to all traders, regardless of experience level or position.

Speaking from a unique point of reference, Mr. Trinidad uses applicable examples, including graphs and relevant historical events, to walk the reader up a gradually ascending staircase of trading knowledge.  Each step builds upon the predecessor, helping to formulate an overall plan of attack for the investor.

Once Upon a Trade is a book you’ll read in an hour, but refer back to repeatedly throughout your trading career.

Download it now and profit from hard-fought lessons of an experienced trader of the markets.

Once Upon A Trade: Lessons From 15 Years Of Trading Through The Greatest Booms And Busts Of Our Generation, by Rainier Trinidad

From the Author Over the past 15 years, the U.S. stock market has experience tremendous volatility, from the dot-com boom in the late 1990s, to the brutal bear market that followed, to the recovery led by the housing boom, to the crisis that followed, and now, another boom driven by the Federal Reserve's easy money policies.I traded in all these markets, first from the eyes of an amateur, then a fledgling professional, then as a seasoned hedge fund manager. After getting the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation, managing $100 million at Wells Fargo, and another $50 million for a hedge fund and trading over $1 billion in equities during these extraordinary times, it was time to share my own lessons and stories about the market. These are the lessons I've learned, about what works and what doesn't when it comes to how to make money (or avoid losses) in the stock market. You'll get 15 years of experience condensed into one brief and valuable read. No fluff, just to the point. If you manage your own portfolio, are trading on the side, or are a seasoned professional and you want to know some of the rules that can improve your edge, this book is for you. I usually tell people that learning to trade can cost up to $10,000 because of the inevitable mistakes that are made in order to learn the rules of engagement in the stock market. You don't have to make the same mistakes I made. Get this book so you can learn the lessons without paying the steep costs I paid to get them. It's my hope that your return on investment from Once Upon A Trade will be many times over what you paid for it. And if you did not find the lessons to be helpful, contact me and I will refund your purchase.

I must say, without reservation, it has been the most insightful book on trading I’ve ever read. My trading skill ranges somewhere between novice and experienced, having a pretty good grasp of the overall concept but not having a well-defined strategy. That has now changed with Rainier’s help.He takes the reader on a 15-year journey of trading ups and downs, honestly evaluating what he did right, as well as wrong. I was encouraged to see that he started with little more than an interest, and built upon it to achieve real success in the trading community. I don’t have time to devote to trading full time, but I would like to dabble enough to make some money and gather some experience.I guess that’s the main thing I’ll take away from this book – I don’t have to make the same mistakes the author made during his learning years. He’s openly given me the steps to succeed, taking the precautions to avoid common mistakes and misconceptions that even experienced traders make. The writer's style is very straightforward, direct and concise, but equally easy to follow and comprehend. I can see why it would be of value to traders at all levels of understanding and experience. I’m looking forward to using my new-found trading strategy and would recommend this read to anyone thinking of trying their hand in the stock market.

I thought it was an optical illusion of the computer. I think the book was originally smaller and they enlarged everything to make it full size. The pictures are a bit wonky. My son prefers the other how to draw book better. It's okay if the price is right :).
