About the Author A performer at heart since childhood, Abby Green would sing for family members, some of whom would fall asleep during the performance. That did not discourage her. She graduated Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas in 1997 having collected many musical awards. Abby released her first solo CD, Éíníní, in 2008. One reviewer remarked, "quite simply, gorgeous. Her voice is polished without ever sounding slick or generic." When Fig for a Kiss was released in 2011, another reviewer commented, "Her considerable talents with the language, and in music, are on ample display with the release of her excellent second album." Whether the song calls for energetic rhythms or chord choices that echo the intensity of a broken heart, Abby plays her Irish bouzouki and shares her rich soaring voice to tell the tale in Irish, Scots Gaelic, and in English. As a native Texan, her love of Celtic songs, languages, and tunes has been a true journey of discovery. She enjoys unlocking the treasures of beautiful music often hidden behind the veil of languages unusual to our English speaking eyes and ears. As a full time musician, she performs with Istanpitta Early Music Ensemble as lead and harmonizing vocalist, frame drum percussionist, and storyteller. She can be heard on three Istanpitta CDs. Abby has also enjoyed singing and recording with Texas Early Music Project and collaborating with other independent artists. Her work has been preserved in both live and studio performances. Today, Abby lives on 10 acres in south Texas with her talkative grey cat, Stoli. In between musical travels, she uses the property to build small efficient cabins to demonstrate green-living ideas. Green CHAI, the Ranch is a work in progress, and welcomes visitors who enjoy building, crafting, or just relaxing. With the completion of The Tradition of Irish Song, she intends to continue sharing traditional music, and she hopes that the harmony section creates a world where audiences and groups of people will sing some of this amazing music together. Her third CD, Why Should I?, should be available by the end of 2015.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Lovely and useful collection for fans of Irish song By Cinzia This is a well-curated collection of Irish and folk songs that makes learning and playing them yourself as easy and fun as it gets. The songs are popular with Irish traditional music fans, but not overexposed, so you will find plenty of people who know them, and lots of occasions to sing them. The songs that are in Irish include a phonetic pronunciation guide underlaying the tune, as well as the Irish spelling underneath that, which is a good way to get a feel for Irish pronunciation patterns, especially if you're using song to help you learn the language. What really makes this book unique is the harmony section. You can use it to sing the songs in harmony with friends, or try singing the tune and giving over the harmonies to a melody instrument, like fiddle, concertina, or penny whistle. Since chord symbols are also provided for all the songs, this book makes it possible to play and sing them with any combination of instruments and voices.Irish traditional song, like other Irish musical traditions, is primarily an oral tradition. The best way to learn them is still at the knee, so to speak, of an experienced traditional singer with a large repertoire. Unfortunately, though, this tends to put the songs out of reach of many who would otherwise get much enjoyment from learning and singing them (and prevent them from passing the tradition on, in turn.) The Tradition of Irish Song helps to open pathways to make these beautiful songs more accessible to musicians and fans.

By Indolent Cin If you have an interest in Irish music, whether as performer or audience, you can't go wrong with Abby Green. This volume is extremely helpful with lyrics, pronunciations of said lyrics, background, chords, and harmonies. And don't forget to look for her CDs. Her voice is as lovely as her personality.

It's rare (for me at least) to find a book that has traditional Celtic music in Gaelic, but not only is there a great variety of tunes included, but phonetic pronunciations are also provided. The sheet music is easy to follow and the harmonies for vocals really work well. I'm looking forward to practicing these tunes.
