“How to Draw Cool Stuff: Basics, Shading, Texture, Pattern and Optical Illusions” is the second book in the How to Draw Cool Stuff series. Inside you will find simple illustrations that cover the necessities of drawing cool stuff. Specific exercises are provided that offer step-by-step guidelines for drawing a variety of subjects. Each lesson starts with an easy-to-draw shape that will become the basic structure of the drawing. From there, each step adds elements to that structure, allowing the artist to build on their creation and make a more detailed image. Starting with the basic forms, the artist is provided a guide to help see objects in terms of simplified shapes. Instructions for shading to add depth, contrast, character and movement to a drawing are then covered. The varieties of texture and pattern that can be included in an artwork offer another layer of interest and depth to a design. These elements are necessary to indicate the way something looks like it feels in a work (texture) or creating the repetition of shapes, lines or colors (patterns). Illustrated optical illusions involve images that are sensed and perceived to be different from what they really are, showing examples of how the mind and the eyes can play tricks on each other. All you need is a piece of paper, a pencil and an eraser and you are ready to draw cool stuff. Once the drawing is complete, it can be colored, shaded or designed in any way you like to make it original. Following these exercises is a great way to practice your craft and begin seeing things in terms of simple shapes within a complex object.

If it really disappoints you, you can return it. But it probably won't. If I had to travel with one book, it would be this. And massive value for the contents. If you're unsure, read on but either way, click and get this thing. I've combed HUNDREDS 'how to draw' books, bought costly tomes, scoured and tried many many free and at-cost websites, online videos etc. No there's no substitute for say, a four year fine-art degree or a massive graphics and art book and media tutorial library. But of the zillion books in the $5-$150 dollar range (imagine building a library in that price range) - at least THIS BOOK- puts an impressively vast, but well broken-down and easy to understand- array of techniques and also- and this is big- of styles and basic shapes, and design methods most of us want to draw, but even with practice, find the principles and proportions elusive-- all here, between two covers. Under $20. Why are you still reading this? Get it.Pros- (so much here) - basic "never drew anything" folks can get started right away. The book has basic 2-d and 3-d figures, guidelines, shading and texture. NO need to get twenty books to comb for the same information-advanced drawing - to BOTH- engage advanced draftspersons and illustrators get into 3-D, optics and also styles that most, even advance books don't show. WHILE breaking down the process so beginners can ALSO grasp and actually draw the really tricky stuff.- Major difficult stuff in here, simply shown. eg- figure proportions, HANDS (yes THAT tough bit-made easy, anatomical proportions laid out simply. ,- Complex figures (seahorses, snails, etc) broken down, so a beginner can see and add the basic principles up to complex drawings right away.-Super-tricky optical illusion drawing (soap bubbles, escher stairs, optical illusion endless knots) broken down and made very easy.-Realistic styles as well as several different types (that zen doodling thing, but also action principles, skin and surface textures, different drawing techniques (crosshatch, stipple, stone and glass fracture) all handled easily here.- Includes (but doesn't make a burdened complicated mess of) some actual pencils out there, as well as including all the texture drawing techniques (crosshatch, stipple, blending, highlight.)The real plus on that, is that you're not locked into a single style. These drawing methods adapt SO readily- whether you are doing photo-realism, mechanical type illustration, 2-d line drawing, cartoon, or very imaginative fantasy. It CONTAINS specific items and drawing frameworks, but arms you with the techniques to adapt the basics to your own style and projects. THIS I think is what makes this book so 'money'. or 'super value'. (SO many others rely on 'one style' or are so basic that how to get a style from the bare bones of circle, triange square, shade- done- don't have.)Mainly- the book is a 'know, understand, do' method. You're not saddled with seeing one style replicated by a master a thousand times, way over your head (you know those books. "Street scene'. First draw a few rectangles. Then just add (a million really difficult techniques and bits that go completely unexplained because the artist can DO them but can't EXPLAIN those to the rest of us!)Even if you can't read instructions well or 'follow what a super-experienced artist does"- you can look at the guidelines and the way the tricks work and do it yourself readily.Cons- I find the cons here so minor, and so true of many other books that cost a lot more, videos that have poor visuals etc but here goes: -Most wording is good but- a bit of the long list of verbal 'know, understand do' hints on each facing page, are a bit superfluous or underdeveloped. (I skip some of the copious reading...)-You are mostly NOT stuck with 'the artist's own style' but an advanced imaginative artist might find some of the basic guidelines a bit unnecessary or the 'how to', a bit more geared towards fast illustration (a bit more 'realistic charicature' than 'draw from life.)That's true and a bit of a drawback in that it won't teach anyone deep 'life drawing', but on the backside, it's really hard to develop your own style if you do NOT know the visual language. It's not 'cartoon visual language'.So the method is brisk- LOTS of visual language tricks, lots of general principles but quick and easy to adopt, and also some really intricate specific items, but really well and quickly broken down to get into easily- to get anyone up to speed. Some might find it a bit too 'tricks and tips' over 'hardcore life drawing' but - on the balance, it is miles above JUST 'cartoon' styles and- it allows someone the visual language common to both realistic life drawing and wild charicature. The book is surprisingly useful even to more advanced life drawing. It's the golden fleece of 'simple' without being tediously babyish, and yet has advanced styles, but so easy a beginner can do them, yet sophisticated enough that and advanced person can throw those into their already very skilled repertoire. It's a book of visual language skills, not a life-drawing course, but it will enhance a skilled life-drawing person, get them over some tricky reflection and hand and expression hurdles. Now that you've spent time on the review, I hope you were only reading it WHILE waiting for your book to come. It's not your mother's 'draw a happy tree' one-method fits all, book. Catherine Holmes studied the real hardcore deal MFA mechanical and life drawing and teaching- and this and her first book? Holmes is AMAZEBALLS. For under $20, she doesn't impress you with 'how great she is'. She arms you with all the right teaching and visual skills to very quickly impress yourself with how well YOU can draw. And that is really key to what makes any drawing book worthwhile. This the thing you find and wish Amazon had the magical six-star button for. .

An enjoyable and "cool" sequel to the first How to Draw Cool Stuff book by Holmes By Bookish If you liked Catherine Holmes' first book, How to Draw Cool Stuff: A Drawing Guide for Teachers and Students, then you'll like this sequel as much.Once again, Holmes opens with similar encouragement and general tips for students, slightly reworded (and some saved/elaborated upon for an ending in this book rather than ending abruptly with a lesson). The teacher specific instructions aren't as extensive; personally I think inserting the same instructions verbatim from the first book would be fine for continuity and a refresher. This book includes a table of contents (hooray!) whereas the first didn't.This book is structured like the first with each lesson containing the know, understand, do and vocabulary prior to actually drawing. I think this works great for teachers and students alike. If students understand the principles behind the lesson, they are more prepared for the actual mechanics of drawing. Many will probably produce better, more skilled artwork with this background knowledge. This book, as the title suggests, covers shading, textures and optical illusions. Lessons are new and not repetitive from the first book. Shading lessons include flowers, ribbon, a pear, and a portrait. Then some lessons are broken down into a line art drawing (studies simple shapes, curves, etc.) and their counterpart shaded version. Other lessons include the skeleton, mandalas (I especially like the personalized mandala), a dreamcatcher, Zen Doodles, optical illusions, and "impossible objects" ( MC Escher-esque geometrics). Zen Doodles are basically zentangles, but covered briefly from a beginner standpoint. The "cool stuff" section includes a chain link heart lock, hourglass, baseball cap, koi fish, t-Rex dino, self portrait with text, Rube Goldberg machine, sugar skulls and a human heart. Some students might not find some of these to be "cool," but most should enjoy at least some of them. The basics of the human head portrait are repeated, but not the detailed features like eyes and lips as in book one.One thing I would've like to seen:-- an illustration showing how the placement of shading changes with the position of the light sourceThe book wraps up with encouraging tips such as the uniqueness of your own art and the rewards of creativity. How to Draw Cool Stuff: Shading, Texture, Pattern and Optical Illusions is a worthy sequel and Holmes fans will enjoy it.

The directions progress step-by-step, in logical increments for a beginner. The author starts with the basics and builds up to more complicated drawings. It's an amazing resource if you're learning how to draw on your own. I highly recommend it.

About the Author A performer at heart since childhood, Abby Green would sing for family members, some of whom would fall asleep during the performance. That did not discourage her. She graduated Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, Texas in 1997 having collected many musical awards. Abby released her first solo CD, Éíníní, in 2008. One reviewer remarked, "quite simply, gorgeous. Her voice is polished without ever sounding slick or generic." When Fig for a Kiss was released in 2011, another reviewer commented, "Her considerable talents with the language, and in music, are on ample display with the release of her excellent second album." Whether the song calls for energetic rhythms or chord choices that echo the intensity of a broken heart, Abby plays her Irish bouzouki and shares her rich soaring voice to tell the tale in Irish, Scots Gaelic, and in English. As a native Texan, her love of Celtic songs, languages, and tunes has been a true journey of discovery. She enjoys unlocking the treasures of beautiful music often hidden behind the veil of languages unusual to our English speaking eyes and ears. As a full time musician, she performs with Istanpitta Early Music Ensemble as lead and harmonizing vocalist, frame drum percussionist, and storyteller. She can be heard on three Istanpitta CDs. Abby has also enjoyed singing and recording with Texas Early Music Project and collaborating with other independent artists. Her work has been preserved in both live and studio performances. Today, Abby lives on 10 acres in south Texas with her talkative grey cat, Stoli. In between musical travels, she uses the property to build small efficient cabins to demonstrate green-living ideas. Green CHAI, the Ranch is a work in progress, and welcomes visitors who enjoy building, crafting, or just relaxing. With the completion of The Tradition of Irish Song, she intends to continue sharing traditional music, and she hopes that the harmony section creates a world where audiences and groups of people will sing some of this amazing music together. Her third CD, Why Should I?, should be available by the end of 2015.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Lovely and useful collection for fans of Irish song By Cinzia This is a well-curated collection of Irish and folk songs that makes learning and playing them yourself as easy and fun as it gets. The songs are popular with Irish traditional music fans, but not overexposed, so you will find plenty of people who know them, and lots of occasions to sing them. The songs that are in Irish include a phonetic pronunciation guide underlaying the tune, as well as the Irish spelling underneath that, which is a good way to get a feel for Irish pronunciation patterns, especially if you're using song to help you learn the language. What really makes this book unique is the harmony section. You can use it to sing the songs in harmony with friends, or try singing the tune and giving over the harmonies to a melody instrument, like fiddle, concertina, or penny whistle. Since chord symbols are also provided for all the songs, this book makes it possible to play and sing them with any combination of instruments and voices.Irish traditional song, like other Irish musical traditions, is primarily an oral tradition. The best way to learn them is still at the knee, so to speak, of an experienced traditional singer with a large repertoire. Unfortunately, though, this tends to put the songs out of reach of many who would otherwise get much enjoyment from learning and singing them (and prevent them from passing the tradition on, in turn.) The Tradition of Irish Song helps to open pathways to make these beautiful songs more accessible to musicians and fans.

By Indolent Cin If you have an interest in Irish music, whether as performer or audience, you can't go wrong with Abby Green. This volume is extremely helpful with lyrics, pronunciations of said lyrics, background, chords, and harmonies. And don't forget to look for her CDs. Her voice is as lovely as her personality.

It's rare (for me at least) to find a book that has traditional Celtic music in Gaelic, but not only is there a great variety of tunes included, but phonetic pronunciations are also provided. The sheet music is easy to follow and the harmonies for vocals really work well. I'm looking forward to practicing these tunes.

Painful and challenging because I relived every dreadful presentation I have ever had to sit through in my many years. Some of which were my own. In the books opening Sion has done a masterful job of hitting the many flaws people have incorporated into their presentations. He rightfully acknowledges the sorry state of presentations and the opportunity one was to shine as a premier presenter. After Sion's honest assessment of most presentation skills demonstrated today, his book continues in a simple to advanced process of showing one how to create and deliver a presentation that will elevate one not only to a outstanding presenter, but give that person a huge leg up on inviting people into your product and/or service. This is a must read for anyone who does presentations. Sion has provided clear and concise information to build a "knock it out of the park" presentation. The value you will receive far out weights the cost of the book. The only problem I can see with the book is if everyone purchased one, the bar on presentations would be raised to a level that would require Sion to write another book. And that would be a good thing. Do not wait, get the book now, and save your audience from unnecessary painful presentations.

By Adri Miller This fantastic book is all about the power of authentic relationships, connecting with others, and straightforward, honest communication. The conversational and irreverent writing style captures your attention from the very beginning. I fled the 9-5 grind as soon as I could, yet the examples in this book evoked very distinct memories of the few painful presentations and mind-numbing meetings I was forced to sit through. But more than that, this book packs in the proactive solutions rather than dwelling on the negative. It's lessons apply to people far beyond the business world; I run my own tutoring business and work mostly with teenagers, parents and other educators. Basically, I have to explain in 15-30 minutes what teachers fail to teach in a week's worth of classes. One of the author's early statements - "Bad teaching begets bad learning, and if people aren't learning they aren't growing" - summarizes the problems and opportunities I deal with every day. Another awesome thing about this book is that the author "walks the walk": his writing, messaging and presentation models the strategies and skills he is teaching. As you read about creating great presentations, you also experience an example of one! So the message come through on both an explicit and a subliminal level. When I finished the book, I was inspired to reflect on my teaching style, the way I relate to and explain things to students and parents, and even examine some personal relationships to cut through some of the BS and get down to business. I can't recommend this book enough -- you'll come back to it time and again whenever you need a boost!

By ChiCity13 This needs to be required reading for every professional.Like one of the earlier reviewers stated, the introduction made made me cringe because it brought up all of my painful memories from my 9a-12a job as an investment banker. I cannot count how many times I suffered through (and I am ashamed to admit prepared and delivered) those boring presentations Sion warns against in his book. It was considered taboo to have a deck that was less than 25 pages that didn't follow the standard format, because how else would our clients know how smart we were? I knew something was amiss but this was the approach that I was all I knew. Now I have learned that there's a better way!The conversational approach of the book and the entertaining anecdotes had me hooked at the introduction. I actually read it cover to cover in one sitting because I couldn't wait to learn what else I can improve on. I found myself taking notes throughout and began putting some of Sion's suggestion into practice the very next day at work. I know I'm going to be referring to this text for some years to come as I unlearn all of my bad habits! This will be suggested reading to all of my colleagues!

Good introduction and/or refresher By Jochen Helly This is a short introduction to quantitative analysis and its main methodologies and tools.Few thoughts:- Good introduction or refresher on normal distribution and other types of distribution (e.g. Cauchy)- Simple hands-on tools to apply quantitative analysis (statistical bin analysis, linear regression, Monte Carlo analysis)- Clear language, clear examples- List of pitfalls due to “sloppy statistics”- humble attitude - the author knows how to simplify things and express the essence of the problem, without ever sounding like a know-it-all- contains anything you need – not more and not less – to get going in quantifying a trading approachThe book is downloadable in pdf for free from the author’s blog and is part of what was discarded by the editor from his excellent first book http://www.amazon.com/Art-Science-Technical-Analysis-Strategies/dp/1118115120/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1431589246&sr=8-1&keywords=the+art+and+science+of+technical+analysis

Recommended for day-traders who have zero statistical knowledge By PiKay Mindbogglingly basic! There is absolutely zero quantitative analysis on this book. Zero. He simply explains what statistical measures such as mean and standard deviation are, how to use them at the most very basic level, what a lineal regression is and how to interpret coefficient results (eg, b=slope!), what significance testing is, and then he dares to mention there is something called Monte Carlo, used for simulations.Book is well written.Highly recommended for day-traders who have zero statistical knowledge. If that is you, ignore my review and pick it up. Its free.

It's been nine long months since Derek took his last breath on this earth. He had many passions that stemmed from his nature, but they grew exponentially after he was diagnosed with brain cancer in 2011. One such excitement was the thrill he got from working as an engineer at Precision Planting. He spent many hours in the hospital and in waiting rooms writing this book, intended to pass on the knowledge he gained during his career to anyone who is interested, but especially to those he cared about. We have taken his rough draft and tried to present it in the way Derek would have if he had been given the time to polish it. All proceeds from the sale of Derek's book will go to the Sauder Children's Fund for the benefit of his four children.

Decision Making: Made Easy: Your 3 Options In EVERY Situation ((Problem Solving Skills, Confidence Building, Making Choices)), by Alexaray Taylor

Review "A simplified look at decision making. Helps to distill the process down to 3 essential options in an effort to remove the stress and depression associated with complicated decisions, and ultimately make the best decisions possible with the information at hand. Knowing that you only really have these three options calms your mind by reducing overwhelm, and surprisingly, it applies to just about any situation. Short and sweet, and recommended for people who often stress out when making decisions." -  Reviewer (Steve Banton)"We make decisions everyday - what time to wake up, what to eat for breakfast, what to wear for the office, and the likes. That's the easy decision making scenarios. The big ones are the ones that are not easy to handle. I'm the kind who can over-think when faced with situations where I get to make the decision. I bought this book to help me through this dilemma. Surprisingly, this book makes a lot of sense. What's good about it is that the author presented sample application of each ways. Although there's a few grammar error (it looked like typo errors though), overall this book is totally a grab! I learned so much from this book." - Reviewer (Steven Buelher) "I have always found making decisions quite difficult, even when they don't need to be. And if I need to make a decision in a very short space of time, I tend to find it a little stressful. But after reading this, I realize it doesn't have to be this way. I now know and understand that I need to approach my decision making with more confidence and stick firmly with it. The strategies described in this guide are easy and effective. They have been quick to put into my skill set and I feel much better for it. " - Reviewer (Errol Spence)
