What can video games teach us about success in life?As it turns out, there’s actually a lot that we can learn about life from video games! And Jon Harrison has made it so clear in his book Mastering The Game, that you might find yourself wanting to read more about what he has to say on the topic than actually play a video game in the first place! When Jon Harrison contacted me about reviewing his book, I was so excited to get it. I don’t have a ton of time to devote to gaming, but I have been known to dominate some Mario Kart races during my lunch break from time to time. When I finally got it, it quickly became my before-bed read and I got so into it and what he had to say that I found myself nodding in agreement with his points. You guys, if you like video games at all (or even if you know someone who does), you’ll be amazed to learn what sort of affect they are having upon us. Anything from the obvious things like reasoning skills, to the representation of allegory (renamed in this book “allegamey”) within the games themselves, I feel like I will never be able to look at even the most simple of video games in the same way again. For most gamers (and maybe you relate), it’s more than just playing a game. It’s about a story, the journey, overcoming the challenges, and so much more. But we often aren’t conscious of the fact that it’s so meaningful for us. Sure, we may sit down to play a game hoping just to escape our own stresses for a few moments, but there’s actual value behind our actions and choices. Jon does such a fantastic job in his book of bringing this to light.Learn more about how specific games teach us certain things, how games teach you to think ahead and foresee problems in the future, how to keep people from “mashing your buttons,” and even some lessons about how video games can teach you about better inbox management. I’m telling you, this book may not seem like you’re typical leadership/self-betterment book and that’s because it’s so much more than that. You won’t regret picking it up before you sit down to play your next game, and for even the most avid gamers you’ll gain a renewed sense of awareness. So instead of racing to that controller, pick up this book and learn what video games can teach YOU about success in life. But then, by all means, carry on with your gaming.

By Samuel Hatton At first I was skeptical and thought that the concepts in this book might seem sort of "cute", but after I started reading Mastering The Game, I was blown away at how useful it is to look at professional development from such a unique angle.I play video games. Not nearly as much as I used to, but occasionally, I do. This is not something I used to list in my array of hobbies - mainly because of the negative stigma associated with people who binge on video games.Jon D Harrison blows that stigma out of the water. He shows that the stereo-type of the gamer is rarely the "40-year-old man living in his mother's basement". Rather gamers are all around us.This book has been good in helping me accept 100% of who I am.After reading this book, I asked a new co-worker what his hobbies are, he was at a loss for words. I thought that maybe he too may exclude video games from his list of hobbies. So I asked, "Are you a fan of any video games?" He lit up. "Yes! I am! I love video games." So refreshing.I've also shared a few of the concepts in this book with my wife. I think she is beginning to understand a side of me she never fully understood before.

As a kid who grew up in this era of video games this book really spoke to me. I've always made the connection how video games and their challenges can be applied to life but this book articulates it much better then my thoughts had!Truthfully you don't even have to be a video game fan to take a lot from this book as they are used as perfect examples to share the importance of your own personal development. These lessons can then be applied to various aspects of your life whether it's leadership, business or relationships.A great approach to the subject that is right up my ally!
