In The Birth of Rock and Roll, Americana collector Jim Linderman has arranged a storyboard of sorts that dramatizes the spirit of rock and roll in its early days-when "a juke-joint with fifty patrons was a big show," as Linderman writes in his introduction. "A church with fifty congregants was a full house. The annual square dance at the town hall, a rent party, a fish-fry, the honky-tonk piano in the whore house, the union meeting There was no real money in it. A performer was lucky to be fed, get drunk and get laid." The photographs have little to do with the conventional iconography of the birth of rock and roll: conspicuously absent are pictures of young white men in Memphis, poodle skirts, Alan Freed and Bill Haley's Brylcream. These photographs instead document and celebrate the pure but indefinable essence of rocking. Ordinary, anonymous men, women and children-some white, some black-are holding guitars and strumming while looking relaxed or frantic, but nearly always blissful. Some of the action takes place in rural fields, some in dance halls, some at civic events, some in living rooms and basements. Wherever there was an urge to make acoustic or electric music-whether to help at a rent party, busk in front of a crowd or testify in the name of Jesus-there was an uncredited photographer there to snap an image, and these are the photographs that comprise Linderman's fascinating narrative.

Wonderful ephemeral images of people playing/enjoying "roots music" fill the pages of this large format "art" book By Steve Ramm Dust-to-Digital, the small Grammy-winning Atlanta-based publisher (who's audio and print publications are beautifully "crafted" and released in small numbers) has produced many books (as well as a few CDs and one DVD and one title sadly only available as a e-book), and most come with a CD (or CDs) inserted in the front or back. When I received my copy of this book (for review), I immediately looked inside the front and back expecting to find a shiny disc. None there. How to do you do a book about "Rock and Roll" with no music? As the "author" (actually the "compiler") of the book - Jim Linderman - says in the last page with text (as part of interview done by Joe Bonomo - a name new to me, and not explained elsewhere), the book is "a photography and art book" and the story is presented through the 134 photos that fill the majority of the 9x12 inch pages. So, at minimum, you might want to put on a Cd from your collection as you look through this beautifully produced volume. But, don't take out any rock and roll "oldies" album. To truly understand this you'll do best if you select a "compilation" with country, folk, jazz and gospel recordings from, say 1930-1950. That's because this is more than a book about what most folks think of as "Rock and Roll"Linderman is a collector of "ephemera", especially "vernacular photographs", which are photos taken by other than "professional" photographers. (There are a few press photos here too.). For this book, Linderman theorizes that "rock and roll" music was the result of a blending of the styles I noted above as well as African and Caribbean rhythms. The photos he has chosen to include (mostly black and white, with a few sepia tone images) show musicians playing or people listening or dancing. Except for one photo of the Carter Family (actually the women; patriarch A.P. Carter is not in this image), the musicians featured (with only a few identifiable by printing in or on back of photo) are folks you've not heard of.Some of the photos jump off the page such as the one of a teenage interracial couple dancing in what looks the 1940s. (I'd point out the page this is on, but the 160 pages are not numbered.). And, for others, the longer you look at the image, the more you discover.There is some text in the book. There is a three page "Introduction" by the author near the front and a nine-page "interview" of Linderman by the aforementioned Bonomo near the rear. Both are in LARGE and BOLD typeface. While there is some discussion of Linderman's ephemera collection and the purpose of the book, a lot of the interview focuses on the blogs he has including one on "vintage smut and sleaze" (think pornography). That I'm sure is relevant to the subject. (with just the replacement of the letter "h" for the letter "r", and switching just two letters, "pornography" becomes "phonography" - which is really what these photos are more concerned with.So, in summary, as an "art" book this collection of images works well. Some of Linderman's comments (he was born the day that Hank Williams died and a year before Elvis made his first recordings- considered by some the beginning of rock and roll) are enlightening, while others seem to be there to promote his blogs.). And, honestly, this book would best be enjoyed by those who collect "vernacular" "roots" music (music by the common man) than by someone interested "rock and roll" as kit is more commonly described.It's another fine project from Dust-to-Digital, though maybe not their best.I hope this review - and description of the book - is both informative and helpful.Steve Ramm"Anything Phonographic"
